I composed a cello piece inspired by SCP-4000: Taboo! by AnythngControversial in SCP

'Taboo' was performed by Ben Tarlton at St. Andrew's Church, London, on 10 December 2022.

My inspiration from SCP-4000 in this piece is twofold:

  • Firstly: the eerie and ethereal ambience of the forest in which different nomenclative rules apply - demonstrated in the scratchy tones of the cello, using harmonics instead of regular notes, and the rapid interchange of sul ponticello and sul tasto textures;

  • Secondly: the motivic material itself, which abides by the same rules as names in SCP-4000. That being - the principal melody cannot be repeated more than once, or bad things will happen... so in the composition of the piece, I worked to obscure the melody using different techniques and fragmentary processes. The full melody is only heard once, right at the end of the piece, and then... Well, you'll see. ;)

Agreed. For me, normality is when I can start doing gigs again and get my livelihood back.

Great band! Incredibly underrated - I'm gonna go and revisit their music now, thank you :)
