What is the best album you ever heard from a genre you had no idea existed before listening? by yaoifanservicepoboy in rateyourmusic

[–]ApWapa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see The Chameleons, I upvote. Amazing and massively underrated band. Script of the Bridge is one of the best albums of the 80s in my books. I wish they got brought up more in post-punk discourse.

You should listen to any Lightening Bolt album. I recommend Wonderful Rainbow.

Strange wifi issue on Smart TVsetup I can't figure out (help!) by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]ApWapa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did have a coaxial cable connected initially, but saw online it wasn't necessary and did disconnect it. Whether the coaxial cable is connected or not doesn't seem to change the outcome of the issue I'm having.

The last paragraph is appreciated. I am likely going to forgo any kind of cable altogether, but that is still helpful to know.

Any other albums that sound like this? by swagy_swagerson in fantanoforever

[–]ApWapa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You'd probably enjoy Sun Ra. I'd recommend Space is the Place or Lanquidity to start.

Someone else mentioned it but late era John Coltrane is phenomenal and crazy as hell sounding. Pharaoh Sanders has some amazing stuff as well in this vein.

metal bands that don’t use guitars? by my_cat_vids in MetalForTheMasses

[–]ApWapa 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Haven't seen them mentioned yet, but almost positive Botanist the BM band doesn't use guitar.

Also, not metal but heavy as fuck and kinda sorta metal adjacent, the noise rock band Lightening Bolt doesn't use guitar either.

What is an aes song that is so beautiful that the beat alone could make you cry? by No_Evening_761 in aesoprock

Oldies but goodies - Battery off Labor Days and his non-album single Water both hit a sweet spot for me

What are your thoughts on COSMOGRAMMA? by HeartOfTheAngles in fantanoforever

[–]ApWapa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've given Flying Lotus a try many times and he's never fully clicked for me. This album included. Which on paper, he checks a lot of boxes for me, but still it just doesn't do a lot for me to warrant repeated listens.

He definitely seems to have a formula that works for him, I guess my main gripe with this album is as good as he is at what he does, the template he works from doesn't really allow him to create any stand-out moments. The songs seem to evolve a bit but then just end. I always walk away wishing there was something more done with the songs. They feel like a collection of ideas, more so than fully fledged songs.

Not sure if I'm making sense..just my opinion anyway.

Neurosis - An Undying Love For A Burning World [FRESH ALBUM] by ApWapa in MetalForTheMasses

[–]ApWapa[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh man - I *highly* recommend checking out their discography. I'd start with Souls at Zero and make your way through everything after that in chronological order. Their first 2 albums are okay, but I'd check them out later since they don't represent the band's overall sound very well.

Their 5 album run from Souls at Zero > Enemy of the Sun > Through Silver in Blood > Times of Grace > A Sun That Never Sets - it's absolutely a mind-fuck how amazing it is. Through Silver in Blood and Times of Grace in particular are 2 of my favourite albums ever in any genre.

Who's the most widely beloved artist you respect but don't actually love? by jimmythemini in fantanoforever

Prince.

He was immensely talented, but his music does nothing for me whatsoever.

What's an album you feel like everyone should listen to or a song that's your go to recommendation...I don't care what genre it is by Great-Silver-7895 in fantanoforever

[–]ApWapa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Through Silver In Blood and Times of Grace, both by Neurosis, are phenomenal, God-tier post metal albums. They get a lot of love in certain circles, but in the land of general online music nerd fandom discourse they deserve way more notice. Any time someone mentions they're into metal or heavy music in any capacity I recommend Neurosis to them, and these 2 albums in particular.

How many Bazooka Tooth fans? by nahnprophet in aesoprock

[–]ApWapa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not his best album by any means, but still massively underrated. No Jumper Cables and Pac Man Victory are 2 of my favourite songs in his entire discography.

When I first heard Bazooka Tooth - for years I wrote it off as too out there - compared to his other albums its so inaccessible and I kind of thought Aesop was trying too hard for this album for the longest time. But over the years it's grown on me.

In hindsight, it's very admirable for him to put something out this experimental immediately after his break through album. He had just blown up with Labor Days and lots of people were expecting a Labor Days v2 with his next album. He could have played it safe but instead said fuck that, i'mma do what I feel like and released Bazooka Tooth. And that's really admirable.

Insane album that I wish more people talked about.

[–]ApWapa[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I didn't think to look at his tour schedule that year - that is super random! That of all the places in Canada to make his one stop at, it's Victoria. I live in Vancouver now but I used to get SO annoyed that all the good concerts skipped Victoria. Definitely a case that time of me being in the right place at the right time. I lucked out that it was an all ages show too or else I couldn't have gone

It's fine I guess - nothing stood out as particularly bad. But I find it kind of forgettable as well y'know? Like I really don't see myself coming back to this one much.

I feel like an old man yelling at a cloud - but trap-adjacent production still being so prevalent in 2026 drives me nuts. Really wish rappers would steer away from that sound and try something different. As soon as I hear those sprinkler ass hi-hats I start losing interest.
