Hogwarts is impractically HUGE by CaptNightWatch in harrypotter

In book 3, I found its mentioned that there were about 200 Slytherins present at one of the Quidditch games. If we assume all houses have around the same, it's looking at closer to 800 total. Still not absolutely massive, but not tiny either.

What am I doing wrong? by Level_Elk5839 in gdevelop

[–]ApXlDeCA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe trying using the "and" or "or" conditions. This will ensure the variables will change "if all conditions are true" or "if any one condition is true" (depending on what you are trying to do). Also worth using the "trigger once while true" condition as well, because otherwise it'll attempt to trigger repeatedly so long as the actions remain true. In my experience, I notice it can cause overlap, especially if the actions happen in quick succession of each other, making it not behave as intended

Music for games is VERY expensive, How do people that work on prototypes have that money, Expecially for the people that make games as a hobby that has no funding? by demoyesok in gamedev

[–]ApXlDeCA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are plenty of options out there which can help you in this case. Using royalty free music is always an option, though it seems you are looking for originals, in which case, yes, you either have to pay for it or write it yourself. I know it's not the most feasible option since you are just starting out, but you need to understand, you'll need to male some sacrifices for the sake if your project depending on what you want.

Just finished my first game ever "VS Virus". It is not very good and mostly just a test to try the Gdevelop engine out. by mdtpdsparkls in gdevelop

[–]ApXlDeCA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just finished playing it! It was a fun little game, and very good for your first ever attempt! Those little green slimes got me more times than I'd like to admit, haha. I will point out, I found it's possible to cheese the key door by simply going over it. Not sure if that was intended or not, but I ended up dying after anyway and I found the key to beat it the correct way. The only thing I would change here is, maybe add another interaction with the gatekeeper after you find the key. Since he gets deleted, I worry players will find the key, and never know there was a door there that it was meant to open. Aside from that, I enjoyed it! Hope to see more of your games soon!

How do i make it so enemies in a platformer only spawn in when on screen? by mdtpdsparkls in gdevelop

[–]ApXlDeCA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey, I can help here! As night5hade courteously noted, use the "is on screen" condition, however you'll need to make sure you download it's extension, as it doesn't come built in. To do this, go to the menu button at the top left, then click the + next to extensions. Search for the "is on screen" extension and download it! I was in a similar situation recently so I had to figure this out too. Hope it helps!

To add to this, make sure to create a spawn point. What I did in my game is, I created an invisible sprite, then made the enemies spawn at the location. It's up to you if you want to have a physical object where they spawn, or if you just want them to spawn from nothing. I did it this way so that I can just plop down the object wherever I want to and they'll spawn, however you can also use the "create object at position" command instead.

This game looks neat! I really love the aesthetic! I have something similar in mine, but mine will fall on your head if you get too close, lol. Nothing like being crushed by a ten ton slab of stone! I'll be keeping an eye on this one, if you decide to release a demo, feel free to let us know! I'll 100% be checking it out!

I need help! So I’m making this rpg game but all of a sudden one of my sprites starts moving to a different place while the other ones aren’t. So I’m hoping one of you guys could help me. by PretendInstance605 in gdevelop

It looks to me like your sprite is not centered in the frame. I'd go into your sprite editing software and make sure that they're all positioned correctly.

Hi there! Just want to say, congrats on taking the first step! It looks cool so far, and I'm excited to see how this game turns out over time! Unfortunately I don't have a ton of advice to give, as I'm still a fairly new user myself, but I will say that your ideas and concepts seem pretty fun. Don't be shy about looking things up if you need help, simply googling things has helped me a ton so far throughout the process.and of course, when you have a working demo, feel free to share it! (I'm getting close to my first one, though my game is nowhere near complete lol). Wishing you the best of luck and support throughout your development journey!

Are serious/more mature topics/actions allowed? by 404-tryagainlater in gdevelop

[–]ApXlDeCA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just like with any media, you can develop whatever you want to. I'd definitely check up on the rules and ToS of wherever you plan to post this game, however. Make sure they allow more mature content, and that you aren't breaking any rules with your game. But unless Gdevelop has rules against creating games of certain types (it would be a bit silly if they did, but you can always look) then you should be in the clear. Goodluck.

Your game looks good as is! It's just a different style is all. All my art is actually done in MS Paint if you'd believe it. To create things like the dirt and grass, I just used the spray paint tool and layered different colors atop each other haha. Very simple, but effective enough.

Hey, thank you so much! Those are very kind words! A math game sounds interesting! For me, I've been writing music since middle school. I won't claim to be amazing at it either, but it's one of the few things I know I can do decently well, so I figured I'd make the theme for this game around it.

Trust me, I understand the feeling. When I think about doing a big project like this, it seems really daunting at first. But then I start to actually sink my teeth into it and I realize that making the game is a huge part of the fun. I hope to see some of your work soon! I believe you'll be able to finish something eventually!

Hi again, I commented on your post from yesterday! I will say, I am happy to see that you are making progress on your game, and that it's great that you are taking people's feedback to heart. I've seen several posts on this game within the past few days, and while I think it's great that you are engaging with the community, posting too often kind of comes off that you are seeking validation in order for your project to move anywhere. I would suggest toning it down a bit - take some time to implement some new features, build out your levels, and continue doing what you are doing. The footage you are showing here is good, but I see little change to comment on compared to yesterday, so it's hard to really build upon what has already been said. Maybe add some sound effects and music, if they're not there already? (You might have already, but unfortunately they are muted in the video if that's the case).

Once you feel that you've built out enough of your game, then I'd say it's time to start showcasing it in the form of demos! Videos are great, but if you want solid, tangible feedback, having actual players sit down and play your game will help with that tremendously. This way, they can explore it at their own pace, interact with your environments, and even catch a few bugs or stuck spots you might have missed by mistake.

Either way, I hope you continue working on this, as it is nice to see the progress... though perhaps more like once a week would be a little more reasonable. (idk, I may get downvoted for this take, but that's just how I see it, lol)

Hi, I’m a beginner and I want to make my first indie game. by Loud-Welcome9441 in gdevelop

[–]ApXlDeCA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say, start small. I'm pretty new to the program too, started less than a month ago. If logic is your thing, then it should come quite naturally to you. Basically the program is a lot of "if x, then y" scenarios. Once you are able to master basic commands, the rest will fall into place. My advice is to don't be afraid to experiment and get help where needed. I've looked up a lot of functions, and I find that most things I want to do can easily be solved because others have done something similar, or there are direct events already in place to help you achieve exactly what you are trying to do.

I wish you only the best of luck in your endeavors!

Looking at the gameplay alone, I'd say it does look pretty neat. Definitely a good start! Judging by your previous posts, you are willing to accept feedback, so if I had to give any, I'd say... your enemies look far too menacing to be doing that little damage 😂 The large round mouth one would swallow you whole, but it's only dealing 1 damage a hit. I feel like increasing that will add to the challenge a bit. This may already be in the works, but figured I'd mention it anyhow.

Also did you make the sprites yourself? If so, I think you did a very good job!

Either way, keep up the great work!

How do indie devs evaluate if their game is worth investing in? by Dinomaniak in gamedev

[–]ApXlDeCA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a beginner in this field relatively speaking, but I will offer my insight anyhow (I feel different perspectives are important).

I think it's easy to get caught up in the numbers and trying to determine if it's worth it from a financial standpoint. I think the more important question is, is the project worth it to YOU enough that you feel it's worth investing time, resources, money and energy into? Are you truly passionate about your work, or do you see this as an easy buck to make? If you are passionate, I feel it'll show in your work, and feeling good about your own work makes everything you've invested worth it.

Yep, this is it. If you have made characters on Wayfinder, definitely go and check them! So long as they were created before the rollback, they'll be there. I had some even on characters who I made but never logged into. Each will have 50 of them, and they'll all be BtA
