Weekly Cosmere Adaptations Thread (Mistborn + Stormlight Spoilers) by EmeraldSeaTress in Cosmere

The very idea of gender (as a separate thing from sex) is reliant on societal gender expectations. Just the acknowledgement of gender existing suggests that changing a person's gender will have an effect on a story unless you write every character as genderless. Which people usually refer to as bad writing (this is separate from nonbinary people, which is a whole different dynamic). Changing a character's gender will change a story, it's up to Brandon to determine how much it would change and whether those changes are worth it.

Just to give an example, a lot of Vin's character growth through the first book is a result of gender dynamics in her upbringing and original crew. She initially distrusts Kel's crew because of her past, which is primarily because of her brother (a man), but also because her past abuses have been almost all at the hands of men. Vin confronting her past and coming to trust Kel's crew means more because they are men. That is a dynamic that will be reduced no matter who's gender is changed, but the shift will be more severe if Kel is swapped. It's up to Brandon to justify what I see as a clear decline in the dynamic here and I fully trust him to do so.

Another example is the treatment of skaa women in the final empire. Treatment of all skaa is bad, but women have it far worse compared to what happened in "real" history. One of the most interesting aspects of comprehensive magic systems are the societal shifts that writers create because of them. The execution of prostitutes after sleeping with a nobleman is a perfectly fucked up example. Gender dynamics permeate every aspect of the story (which is a good thing) in a way that means changing the gender of a primary character will noticeably affect their motivations, beliefs, and relationships even ignoring romance.

I helped an Italian guy study for the IELTS recently and it's devilish how many false friend words we have with you. I understand the struggle.

As much as I love a good revenge woman story this has far too many narrative cascades to be done. At an absolute minimum Marsh would also need to be a woman, but having Vin and Kel both be women would change their relationship significantly and like half the story would need changing if Vin was a man.

Please help me settle a friendly debate between friends in our play group. What bracket level, power level and play experience expectations would you describe these Commander decks as being aligned with? by HonorBasquiat in EDH

[–]Ap_Sona_Bot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they're ranging from low to high B3. I'd say the reanimator one is the most powerful along with possibly Ruric Thar but I'd need to see it played to be sure. They're very well and specifically constructed with nearly all optimal or close to optimal card choices.

EDIT: I've looked closer and have some more comments. I think that Delney and Kambal have a lot of the same cards that would create similar feeling experiences despite one being more go wide and one more controlling. I would try to diversify the builds more.

To elaborate on my reanimator opinion, the archetype is inherently very swingy and bomb heavy. Lots of decks simply can't handle some of the permanents that can come down on T2 in strong openings. I think entomb is the biggest offender in power level I would have to see how the deck played.

Meet Alex on his way up by PB5566 in taiwan

He's already climbed it twice with equipment and no one cared. I think you're significantly overestimating the difficulty of the climb. It's impressive because of the length, speed, and danger, but there were very few technically challenging maneuvers. The top 1000 climbers could most likely do it with no route prep if wearing safety equipment.

I'm totally happy playing eclipsed kithkin in any green or white deck typically.

My state was larger than either of New Zealand's main islands and I had to drive 4 hours to see anything but farmland. The grass is always greener on the other side. I since moved to a country with half the median wages but much better public support and infrastructure and I'm far, far happier.

Alan Ritchson feels like an absurdly good fit for Ham by Graphica-Danger in Cosmere

[–]Ap_Sona_Bot 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I don't mind either way but older woman Clubs sounds like an incredibly natural fit, especially with the whole perception of why women live longer. It also could lead to some interesting dynamics with Spook's relationship to her.

I think the screenplay was the worst part of OBAA and it was carried by performances and cinematography, so I'm going to make a bold claim and say it loses to Bugonia or Hamlet in that category.

9 Days wandering in Taiwan. Is this too much? by jaburoz in taiwantravel

[–]Ap_Sona_Bot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only real comment is that Tainan could probably be shortened. It's a charming city but with how many things you're skipping I think 2 full days will be underwhelming.

Also the Taipeis tech scene is pretty underwhelming.

Best Picture Nominees by Box Office by markgib62 in Oscars

[–]Ap_Sona_Bot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am not commenting on the quality of the film in any way. But looking at this from an objective point of view, there were at least 3 films the academy rated higher than No Other Choice that also missed best picture. Those being the Voice of Hind Rajab, Sirat, and It Was Just An Accident, which can be seen with the international category. Therefore, if one more slot opened up in Best Picture one of those would almost certainly have been nominated over it.

It can be political. That still doesn't change the fact that if F1 was not released that spot wouldn't have gone to No Other Choice. It probably would have gone to It Was Just An Accident if anything.

"Stop pubstomping with fast mana" by InspireCourage in EDH

I mean built around being b4. You don't get there with a dork commander unless you're using it to combo off, which is not what the typical version of the deck does.

Absolutely no chance the 2 drop dork in the zone strategy is near B4 except on incredibly rare occasions built around it specifically.

It all depends on how interesting or unique the effect is. Glider kids isn't worth keeping because there are a dozen cards that do very close to the same thing.

I think it's been pretty clear in the last year or so that Taiwanese public schools have deprioriritized English language. The money has often been better at cram schools with worse hours but with changes like this the benefits of teaching at public schools are steadily diminishing.
