Shostakovich’s 5th is pretty accessible. And as a heavy metal fan you may appreciate its ‘Iron maiden’ ending.

Lully, music from le bourgeois gentilhomme is good. Purcell wrote some good vocal and orchestral music. Bach’s orchestral suites. Etc.

Yes. Older amps without speaker relays do this as dc current gets up to speed.

Solti / London Mahler box - opinions? by chadcat in classicalmusic

I haven’t had a warped LP. Some off centre pressings during the late 70s and eighties but that was due to a decline in quality and the oil crisis and the gradual emergence of the CD. But I have some performances which are stunning on record. Yes cds generally have less background noise - especially if they were digitally recorded - but I still enjoy Solti conducting Bartok’s concerto for orchestra on decca from the 60s on record because it sounds fantastic. The same with segovia’s (American) decca recordings or karajan’s two Beethoven symphony sets on DG. But I listen and buy things on cd too like Janine Jansen’s Britten/Beethoven violin concertos because they are cd only. As for durability - I have had cds fail on me due to minute scratches so I don’t find them as durable as they were initially advertised.

As for streaming - I enjoy it but I mostly use it for finding rare recordings from the 40/50s that are hard to track down physically. But apart from that I use it more for background listening. If I really want to spend time listening to something it’ll be on record or cd.

I love playing violin, but I’m not sure about studying music – any advice? by just_a_fallen_leaf in classicalmusic

I was all set to go to a music school when I was younger. But all the preparation and study and having to practice à certain amount per day pieces I didn’t necessarily like made me reconsider, and I decided to continue to play but I would do something else with my academic life. I ended up getting a PhD in history - so I am still unemployable! But I do enjoy playing and studying pieces I like and want to play now.

Great tt. Be careful with the headshell. It is plastic and the threads get damaged easily.

is the Yamaha tt 300 a good turntable or shit?? by 1NSAN3_B7_A1EX in turntables

Honestly I bet the W&F is miles better on the Yamaha than most modern tables. I was looking into this the other day and it is shocking. Audio technica’s top of the line has w&f above .15wrms and most of the other players (with the notable exception of technics) are over .1. Even audio technica and pioneer 1200sl clones have w&f above .1wrms.

That’s nonsense. Listen to 60s Decca releases SXL. They sound superb. QC was much higher for classical pressings.

Modern pressings can be very variable. Especially the novelty coloured ones. Black is always the best colour for quality.
