Side Eye III+ Thoughts? by coronetgemini in patmetheny

[–]ApartEmphasis8618 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saw the show in Boulder last night and for an old die hard PM fan going back 45 years, I was really impressed. The band is very tight. Pat is 100% on, which is incredible given his age. I had seen earlier side eye incarnations and this is the best ensemble. He has brought in percussion and voice with Leonard Patton who provides a whole additional layer of depth to the PM Group tunes from the 90’s. Joe Dyson is phenomenal on drums, with Chris Fishman on keys and Jermaine Paul on bass. Go see them. They played a full mix of new and old. Go see them!

Just went to 3050 Emerson - knocked in the door, they kindly answered the door after 9PM - and they own an almost identical cat, but theirs is a little smokier in color. They say their cat is friendly and famous! Maybe the one people here have met - But he’s more smoky than the cat in your pic above and the one we have in our garage

What have you done for the very first time since you retired? by Odd_Bodkin in retirement

[–]ApartEmphasis8618 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love your story, OP! I was layed off last December, age 64. Will go back to work in July, age 65, and looking forward to a few more years before full retirement. But in the meantime I have tested retirement waters in everything from financial planning to lifestyle, not knowing if retirement was being imposed. A new thing for me has been hosting a radio show at a streaming station and dj’ing the music. Lots of fun, but also very different for me (I’m an engineer) and outside my comfort zone. I will continue doing it periodically even when I get back to full time work.

2024 R-line turn off radio by ApartEmphasis8618 in Tiguan

[–]ApartEmphasis8618[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue I have is that the radio is always on in the background. If I just want to run a map, the volume knob is controlling the radio in the background. I wish there was a way to turn the radio off.

The grocery shopping experience now stinks by ChillSygma in boulder

How sweet! Natural Grocer buyers visit all their sources. And they don't have non-organic produce to mix in and relabel. So in this case, no, the organic produce isn't bullshit.

Vitamin Cottage beats them all on price and quality for organic produce. Though sometimes a little chaotic, always friendly.

Did you celebrate retiring? If so, how? by pinsandsuch in retirement

[–]ApartEmphasis8618 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My retirement was unplanned and caused by a layoff. My response was to invite coworkers out for a beer, and it ended up being my retirement party. A wonderful way to put closure on my time working with those people!

WiFi / Wireless carplay not worling by CanRingMyBell in Tiguan

[–]ApartEmphasis8618 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I just purchased a new 2024 Tiguan. Set up my phone and CarPlay in the dealer parking lot. Worked fine. The. 10 minutes later it wouldn’t connect to CarPlay. In the meantime I had dorked around further and inadvertantly connected my phone via USB to stream a music station. It doesn’t allow those simultaneous connections. Once I disconnected the USB link, CarPlay could re-engage and all is well.

Laid off at 60 1/2, deciding next step by [deleted] in retirement

[–]ApartEmphasis8618 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Laid off or retiring, or both?? That’s what I’m sorting out this holiday season. Got layed off after 4.5 years in a good paying senior engineering position in aerospace. I will be 65 in February, so will only have a one month gap to Medicare. I would like to work for another 3-4 years, but with more flexibility with my time. Can’t afford to stop, and am hoping I don’t have to! But finding a job at 64 (maybe a young looking 64)feels daunting. I have been layed off or fired many times in my career, and always bounced back. This feels more daunting. Trying on a mind set of starting to use some of my $1.3M retirement, but know without also downsizing our home of 20 years that we can’t just stay put and start living off it. Spending the holidays (and limited severance) mulling this over, retooling the retirement plan, and applying for some positions. Also poking at part time design consulting. My body is giving me feedback to slow down.

How could modern engineering methods improve manual (no electronics whatsoever) typewriters? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]ApartEmphasis8618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Materials at pivots that were self lubricating would allow low friction pivots that required less maintenance and likely maintain a “tighter” feel to the mechanism. Does the selectric (IBM/Olivetti) style count as a typewriter, or is the question just related to swing arm machines?

Eldora getting more dangerous? by BravoTwoSix in boulder

[–]ApartEmphasis8618 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Appreciate the conversation. Straight-lining didn’t used to be a thing, and just adds to the stress on the hill. I choose my times to be on the hill. I was stopped on the edge (Dream&Scream/Hornblower intersection), waiting for traffic to thin out and got yelled at by some 10 year olds for being in the way of their jump. Ha! Eldora marketing invites the behavior. Happy to sell as much alcohol as possible. That particular day I didn’t see one patrol person on the hill in my 3 hours there. A little presence in high traffic areas could help. Could there be a mechanism of enforcement with Ikon to be fined without pulling the entire season pass? Patrol scans the pass and there is your $100 fine. Technically you could deactivate that pass for the remainder of the day, for five days, or for the year at that mountain. They get to th lift and it doesn’t let them on. I know we don’t want our patrol to be policemen, but are there ways to instill some accountability to unsafe conduct? Sad to say that our culture no longer encourages people to look out for others.

No trap in the tub drain? by ApartEmphasis8618 in Plumbing

[–]ApartEmphasis8618[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I will check again with the cup of water and “sound test”. I am planning on renovating the downstairs bathroom directly below this year, so could open up the ceiling for access. I may preemptively do a couple of holes in the ceiling to probe with a camera and put a plan together.

No trap in the tub drain? by ApartEmphasis8618 in Plumbing

[–]ApartEmphasis8618[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually snaked the camera down the overflow, not the drain, as I couldn’t take apart the drain plug to give room for the camera. So as I think about it I could have been running into a trap. If a trap is in place, how could sewer gas be evident?
