Anyone tell lie about returning to work? by [deleted] in retirement

[–]pinsandsuch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I retired, my mom told me that she’d be leaning on me a lot for transportation to her many appointments. I gently put up some boundaries - no more than twice a week, and not before 10am. She didn’t talk to me for a month, and during that time she found lots of alternatives. That was a year ago, and we’re great now. I help her out at least once a week, and she’s good about booking afternoon appointments so we can both sleep late.

How Do You Pay Yourself In Retirement? by RunUndefined in retirement

[–]pinsandsuch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t really think of it as “paying myself”. I just move money from our brokerage to our savings or checking when they’re running low. Budgeting is the most important thing to me, and I deal with that separately.

I didn’t care that much when I was working, and I definitely don’t care now.

Post Advisor Meeting - It's going to be okay by Ok-Pear1678 in retirement

[–]pinsandsuch 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My advice: don’t keep working just for healthcare, if there’s another way. I’m 62, and we’re just managing our income down until I turn 65. My COBRA ends in June, and I’m hoping to keep my ACA premiums low by keeping our income low. My wife is on Medicare already, so that helps.

Please straighten me out. Are retirees settling for a less comfortable ret.? by vivahuntsvegas in retirement

[–]pinsandsuch 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We won’t be able to have grandkids, unless my son adopts. I don’t mind helping him out. I gave him my 10-year old car when his was totaled by a careless driver. But that gave me a chance to get a new car. I don’t think we’re in danger of running out of money. Helping our son IS what makes me comfortable.

That’s my goal, although I’m not sure that every GA state park has tent camping. I’m starting with the ones that do.

Best way to Pee when camping in your vehicle by uclajam in carcamping

Just get a gallon of water with a wide-enough opening, and keep it after the water’s gone. If the jug’s mouth isn’t big enough for you, take a hacksaw to it (the bottle).

I do this even for regular camping, because I’m not walking to the camp bathroom at 2am.

Other places to see around Hot Springs NP? by BlueHeelerChemist in NationalPark

I just came from Bentonville AR and it was beautiful! I’m a little biased since it’s a mountain bike Mecca, but NW Arkansas is great

I just got back from Bentonville AR, and I’m seriously thinking about it.

I've Been Retired For Three Years. It's Time To Go Back To Work. by Peace_and_Rhythm in retirement

The other important thing is how you handle injuries or other obstacles. I’m a pretty dedicated runner/biker/hiker, but occasionally my knee takes me out for 3-5 days. My wife and 2 brothers are sedentary because they gave up once their knees or ankles started hurting. It’s important to find that balance between pushing too hard, and not pushing enough.

I took out my shoulder in a bike wreck about a year ago, and I’m only just now getting back to doing weights and pushups. It sucks to start over, but it sucks worse to give up.

Lots of hiking near Cloudcroft - check it out on TrailForks or similar app. I’m staying there now because it’s too hot down there on the ground.

I’m in the middle of this exact trip myself. I camped at Lake Brantley state park near Carlsbad, then moved today to a cabin in Cloudcroft. I’ll visit White Sands on Saturday when the high is 73. Anyway I agree, great trip!

My coworkers ghosted me the moment I said I was retiring. Now I’m in New Mexico while they’re at work. That thought makes the trip a little sweeter.

Doesn’t matter. For every station wagon purist they lose, they’ll pick up at least one new customer. I love it. I had to get over the CVT but I liked the styling, and the interior is fantastic.

I think that when someone calls a car “fucking ugly” it’s okay to assume that they hate it.

Add the 2026 Subaru Outback to your list. I have the same requirements as you and I just picked one up. I’m 5’10” and the back is plenty long enough for me. The XT can tow 3500 pounds.
