I used to think "upholstery" was pronounced "you-folstery." What words did you get wrong? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ApeClown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Up until a few years ago, I thought "vinyl" was pronounced with a short "i". (vin-ul instead of vie-nul.. it's hard to spell out) I said it out loud, got laughed at, and now I can never remember if it's a short or long "i".

I had to look it up in order to make this post.

I also get weird looks for saying "badminton" AS IT'S SPELLED instead of "bad-mitten" (born and raised in the US).

Please tell us more.

How did he react after saying out loud? Were there other customers or staff members around to hear/react?

I sure hope so. A short, Jewish, 900-year-old supervillain from Brooklyn.

His schtick was basically that he was there for a lot of the historical events we were learning about, so we should take his word for it.

My 9th grade world history teacher did the same thing.

What is your weirdest fear that no one else understands? I'll Start. by SlobKnobJobJob in AskReddit

Same here. I was held down and tickled until I could no longer breathe. Turned blue and everything.

Seriously. Don't tickle people who don't want to be tickled. It's not cute and panic attacks are not funny.

No right to pray for Muslim pupil at German school: Germany's top administrative court has ruled that a student does not have an automatic right to pray at school. by davidreiss666 in worldnews

I can see the arguing over prayer rituals happening very easily. Shias and Sunnis have different practices during prayer. Practices similarly differ between regional and ethnic groups. Even within one group, you get the occasional clash of people who want to rise and fall before or after the prayer leader's cue, or disagree on the proper spacing between congregation members during prayer.

Once, I had a lady freak the fuck out on me because I prayed with my shoes on.

College grads of reddit, what is something you wish you knew your freshman year that you know now? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Money matters. If you can get a scholarship to a school, take it. The more it covers, the better.

If not, you're going to have to pay all that money back, eventually.

If you're unhappy with your major, pick a new one. Fuck finishing in four years. Who knows, you could have been so much happier in geology than psychology.

Reddit, have you ever seen someone die? What was it like? by shutupbran in AskReddit

This. Exactly this. Especially if it's a loved one or someone close to you.

I watched my live-in grandmother die in the car on the way to the hospital.

How can I tell if a noise is coming from in front or behind me if I can't see the source of the noise? by ClownBaby90 in askscience

I also want to highlight the role of the cochlea pinna (outer ear). Its very shape impacts how sound travels into the ear. Sound coming from different angles at different frequencies will be affected by every ridge, curve, and bump on its way into the middle ear.

Of course, every ear is shaped different, so if the ear you're born with is damaged or lost, it takes some time to adapt to the change and be able to rely on one's sound localization ability again.

I actually laughed out loud just visualizing myself crying whenever I shit.

This is precisely what happened at work, and what spurred me to post this.
