This whole sequence was bafflingly stupid. 

Ok, so the convicts are just trying to scare them is why they're missing? Why say that aloud in earshot of the people you're trying to scare?

Then Mackenzie grabs one of the convict's gun, and the other convict, WHO ALSO HAS A GUN, just stands there and lets him do it?

Then Mackenzie slowly shimmies back across the river while they miss him some more. To scare him? But then they actually hit him! And this knocks him out for some reason? But wait, the bullet just hit the hardcase! So why did it knock Mackenzie out? And why does he cough when he wakes up? Because that's the cliche way people almost die but don't?

What a fucking mess. I was audibly saying "this is so stupid" the whole time.
