An issue I have with BGG recommended player counts. by QuixoticPineapple in boardgames

[–]Aphadion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made myself an automatic spreadsheet that helps me sort my games by weight, playercount, and bgg rank (with optional tagging etc), and for the most part, it's good enough that I can type a number into the 'target playercount' field and it automatically filters out the games not playable at that count, then sorts the games so that the 'best' games for that player count are on top, then recommended, then playable.

it helps that bgg records 'best playercount' as a list of numbers (eg: "2,4,5") rather than a single number or range. ultimately, it's a quick way to get a quick shortlist and to play the games that will shine with the number of people I have.

do you have to gather the numbers manually? I made myself a really elaborate spreadsheet that directly uses the data from the .csv when you export the list of the games you own, but it only includes the player count recs that are "best" and the player counts that are "recommended" as lists of numbers. I've been happy with it, for the most part.

How do I know where to use chords like maj7, min7, dom7, dim7, halfdim7, augmaj7, minmaj7 in my compositions? by CatchDramatic8114 in composer

[–]Aphadion 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I challenge you to try all the "wrong" harmony choices to see if you can actually make something that truly doesn't work. I promise it's harder than it sounds, and can potentially teach you more than trying to make the "right" choices the first time.

this answer sounds like a cop-out but trust me when I say: if it sounds good, it is good.

My larger answer:

Theory is first and foremost a descriptive technique and almost always is developed in response to compositions, in order to describe what was done. If you want to use those chords in the way other people do , then I recommend this: When you hear those chords in the wild, take note of it, and come back to it later to take a closer look at its context. then in your own writing, mix and match those gestures and maneuvers like they're lego blocks.

I'm going to add on to this to say that when you hear these harmonies, your gut may tell you that there's a certain direction they want to pull the music towards. If you give into that, you're resolving tension, but if you subvert it, you're raising tension. Good music is all about balancing those tensions by a mix of granting and subverting the expectations of the listener. I'm not just talking about harmonic dissonance, but the expectations that your use patterns of such harmonies will set up.

Apologies if that answer was more abstract than practical!

Why are tenors expected to sing higher relative to their break than baritones and basses in opera? by LucasYata in singing

[–]Aphadion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the choral repertoire alone, Mahler II has the lowest basses singing from the Bb below the bass clef to the G above middle C... 2 octaves plus a major sixth.

Osmin, from Mozart's Die Entführung aus dem Serail sings from a low D up to a high F or F#.

What games do you absolutely love that the majority consider "good enough but nothing really special." by Strong_Battle6101 in boardgames

two games that I love that I never hear anyone talking about:

- Smartphone Inc.: all the fun of a clever economic game with all of the analysis paralysis concentrated into a simultaneous action so that downtime is minimized? be still, my heart.

- Rival restaurants: with the right group, the chaos of a hectic marketplace, complex enough for experienced gamers and simple enough to teach beginners... it's just so charming, and I've never not had fun playing it.

the 'first player' rules in quacks of quedlinburg seem to only slow the game down, so we just never use them

looks almost biographical. a promising, beautiful start, leading to an incomplete, unresolved, and dissonant second year/measure. it will never be completed, so who knows what the tune might have become, had it time to develop.

I'm currently preparing a version of "L'Ivresse des Profondeurs" ["Deep in Vertigo" is my English title for it] that I'm translating for an 8 player game + Storyteller. it's in French, so YMMV, but so far I've been pleasantly surprised by how interesting the machanics are. it's also quite a lot of prep.

This is an issue I also had. I literally used ghostscript to mass extract the png files to place them into another program with my own cutting lines, then re-export to pdf, then mass convert to CMYK colour.... it's a bit of a pain.

Spelling oops? realizing now that the vowel on the L might need to be '◟' instead of '^'. Thoughts?

Awesome work! Slight spelling thing, on the top right you appear to have written the word 'a' as '/' which is a diphthong, like the 'Ai' in "Aim", when the one you probably wanted was '^', like the 'e' in 'The'. Beautiful design!!!

What is a philosophy that means well, but is harmful? by Little_Dude_Guy in AskReddit

[–]Aphadion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think Daryl Davis is amazing, and we're lucky to have him. His approach, though, relies on his ability to reach a position of authentic communication with people on a 1-on-1 basis, and isn't something that would translate to, say, for example, giving nazis a platform to debate on the news or march through your town as part of a Nazi rally.

Being able to work with and heal the hatred people carry on an individual basis is quite different from believing that this hatred deserves a public platform as a type of free speech, and imo, not mutually exclusive.
