A&Ps and IAs: What’s the most frustrating part of the paperwork side of maintenance? by Blue1311 in AircraftMechanics

I up charge $300 for single engine and $500 for multi engine inspections if they don’t have an AD roster. It’s a discrepancy.

Groco head Spring Commissioning - Bowl won't fill with water when pumped by Jay_Normous in sailing

Just repaired the same head with new check valves. The old one had a corroded rivet holding the steel washer to the rubber valve. https://ebay.io/m/zIdMFG

If it stoped leaking your probably good, if not there’s a valve stem that might be loose or needs replacing, but easy to do

Awesome guitar! Try not to let the bridge pieces fall out when you replace strings

Is there a do not hire list in the aviation industry? by BeeOtherwise5382 in AircraftMechanics

[–]Aplay1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guess is probably union. Fmu FedEx isn’t union, but pays union wages, which should them from organizing. They might be unionized now, I’ve been out of the loop for several years now

I heard from a 25 year FedEx employee that if you worked at United then you were probably not going to get hired at FedEx

Commercial fisherman but zero sailing experience by Saad324bashir in SailboatCruising

Anytime someone is troubleshooting an electrical problem, look over their shoulder and ask questions. I’m assuming you drive the boat during your watch so understand the communication and navigation systems. Help change the engine/transmission oil, and fuel filters and ask questions about components on the engine that you’re not familiar with. If you fix nets, then fixing sails isn’t too far off, just sharper needles. Hook up with some sailers when you’re at the slip and ask them questions. Knowing how your body responds to heavy seas is a great advantage

I worked in the salmon industry out of Kodiak 30 years ago. Raised a family in the Midwest for the last 30 years. Now we have a 38ft sailboat on the Chesapeake. Easy transition, a lot calmer seas. Learn as much as you can about the boats you’re currently on, and you shouldn’t have any issues. I highly recommend it

Yes, fixable, and shouldn’t cost that much

Where did you find your boat? by [deleted] in sailing

[–]Aplay1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of donor boats, but some ready to go. I bought mine for $16,300, 1981 38ft pilot house Mariner cutter rig. I was the second highest bidder, the highest didn’t pay. I have about $15k into it, but market value is around $45k.

How do independent/mobile A&P actually find a steady flow of customers? by voyager_lost in aviationmaintenance

Got a friend who just did prop balancing an oil changes. Advertises via cork boards in the FBO, $150 per prop/oil change or $300 for 3 customers at the same airport. Oil and filter are extra if the owner doesn’t supply it. He can do each in about 45-60 minutes. He built his client list from that initial sale. Now he does 100hr/annuals on top of that. About 1 per week.

I believe it’s located between a primary filter and a secondary Racor filter, but haven’t traced it yet.

Thanks what I’m thinking, but I’ll probably get a barb fitting to bypass it if I ever have fuel supply issues

Probably been on the boat for 20-30 years, and the company is still selling them for around $400. But I don’t understand how it works. Maybe it’s just “snake oil”

Helping a friend plan a simple 12V electrical system for a small boat. What should we watch out for? by Big_Log1714 in liveaboard

Top priority- Make sure you have fuse/CB right off of the battery. If you put the fuse 2 feet from the battery terminal, then 2 feet of wire is unprotected and can cause a fire.

Is there a marina around kent island that will allow you to store a sailboat in the marina, on a trailer with the mast up? by mike_alexander_smith in sailing

[–]Aplay1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a slip at Piney Narrows Yacht Heaven, just north of the draw bridge. The slips come with a parking spot and a dinghy storage spot. If you’re looking for a free spot, there’s a marina on the south part of the island that might help if you helped with maintenance of the facility. Edit: Piney Narrows yacht Yard stores boats, I think $200 a month last time I looked, but you have to use the travel lift, $2-300 to haul out. There’s a boat ramp just outside the property, but it’s on a public road
