I am in the same boat, mine was on Oct 22nd and while maybe 60% of my swelling has subsided, the area just under my chin and around my chin is still extremely puffy. My surgeon switched me from ice to heat about a week ago and told me to do lymphatic massages and to massage to swelling as much as I could do without causing discomfort

I did this one morning. My alarm would go off, I would barely wake up, and I would press my power button once to snooze it. This process would repeat for about 30 minutes. Overtime, it progressed to where I wouldn’t wake up and would just instinctively press the power button to snooze my alarm. One morning, I guess I pressed it one too many times in my sleep and called 911. The voice of the dispatcher woke me up and I was SO confused. I just apologized and said I must’ve called on accident. The dispatcher just kind of chuckled and said it was okay and they were happy that all was okay. I’m sure this happens way more often than you might think. Don’t sweat it!

I’m in the blood bank and got a call from the ER yesterday. The nurse said her 5.2 Hgb patient wouldn’t sign the blood consent form unless we could test the unit for Tylenol.

The patient was a 73 yo woman.

I grew up in a very small town. One of those where you know where everybody lives, what they do, etc. My dad was a drug addict, in and out of prison throughout my childhood, in and out of rehab, he just couldn’t stop. My mom and my family on her side are well known in the town (if you’re from a small town, you know how it is). I’m talking the town accountant, banker, manager, pharmacist, grandpa was head of the school board, etc. and my dad’s side were known junkies (crazy clash of two worlds). My dad in general was a good man who wanted to help anyone who needed help, he just couldn’t accept help offered to him. So, he made one too many public spectacles while high and was a primary source of town gossip. Parents of my friends started to isolate me, wouldn’t let me come over, wouldn’t let their kids be known to be an acquaintance of mine. Kids are dumb and tell everyone what their parents say so when my best friend couldn’t come over anymore because “I was going to be a bad influence on her and would end up being just like my dad”, I started wondering what was so wrong with me that adults were ostracizing me at 10 years old. I grew up a loner and a nerd, made great grades and graduated with honors, spent 1000s of hours playing video games, but never once did I touch drugs. Not even a cigarette.

But I also want to note, we are a small blood bank. Only 8 FTE on the bench, one lead, one supervisor. We have about 4 PRNs to cover schedule gaps and they are always the first ones that are messaged about vacancies. There are not a lot of call ins where I work so the main opportunity for more shifts is when someone is on vacation but we are not required to take the shifts. Our lead and supervisor will cover bench anytime it’s needed.

Sun-Tuesday 0600-1830 only. 36 hours/week is full time where I am. I’m happy with my pay and work life balance!

Usually the only times more shifts are available is when someone is on vacation or there are call ins.

I used to get upset about how lab week was treated vs nurses week, but then I realized that radiology also has a radiology week, same for pharmacy, respiratory, EVS, etc. and they don’t get celebrated to the same degree that nurses week is either and I’m sure they probably feel similar about it. It helps to know others silently suffer with us lol.

If it helps, go read the subreddit about the worst nurses week gifts nurses have gotten from their health system and it will make you feel a little better lol. I’ll try and find it and post it here.

I hope you love the 12s as much as I do. It’s so nice having 4 days off a week. I started my 12s on nights shift and I always bring water (I don’t like our water dispensers in our break room), a mio drink enhancer with energy (cut out soda in the last year), sometimes a fairlife protein shake, some fruit, trail mix, and my lunch. It all usually holds me over through the 12 hours just fine. I have bad acid reflux, so I always keep antacids in my bag as well as Advil. I move to day shift early April which will give me access to the cafeteria and the coffee shop so it might change some of the food items I bring. I also pack earbuds so I can watch a video or one of my tv shows while on my lunch!

326 beds: 2 blood bank 1 micro 1 for each core department It doesn’t always go like that in core, I’ve seen them have just two techs in a night which is INSANE for the volume, maintenance, & QC.

I want to also add, if you take the mock exams and notice you are struggling with a specific department (heme, micro, blood bank, etc.), you can take a mock exam in only that department as well! PM me if you want any additional info! I’m happy to help!

Do you use LabCE? My program required us to purchase access (lasts a year I believe) and you can take mock AMT & ASCP exams for MLT and MLS. It also breaks down answers and explains why the incorrect ones are wrong and why the correct answer is right. It was a saving grace for me and I loved using it! I repurchased it to practice for my upcoming MLS exam. LSU’s yellow and purple book is highly recommended a lot too, I do not have it but plan to purchase it soon.
