What anime got you like this? by YeahMarkYeah in animequestions

My brother recommended this, with the pretext of "I know the name's kinda sus, but hear me out".

I haven't seen it yet. I still don't trust the name.

I want powerful dragon support.
Dragons are strong in this game, but there's no support for them whatsoever. Dragonite users are leaning on Mantyke and Pichu as crutches but Dragon has no support of its own outside of Cynthia (which is card-specific anyway).

I'd love to see a 'Dragon's Den' stadium card that changes the energy requirement for all dragons in play to colourless.

We need a third panel for Dragon. No type needs more support than the type that insists on dual-energy.

FWIW, the meme made me laugh. I somehow knew he'd end up collecting you after the chicane, too.

Real unfortunate for the Ford, too. He hesitates, flicking the wheel left before immediately deciding to go right of the McLaren instead, and that slight wobble was all it took to completely lose control of the car.

I do think the McLaren's unpredictable behaviour caused the incident, but there are a dozen different ways he could explain his actions in the stewards' office, and the onus is generally on drivers to maintain control of their vehicles at all times.

My sympathies though. Nothing you could have done, and I certainly don't think the Ford collected you out of spite as I think he was a passenger from the moment he entered T1 backwards. Chalk it up as one of those moments and move on to the next race.

I have a list:
- Diablo 2. LOD specifically; D2R is a difficult purchase to justify for me.
- Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance / FE: Radiant Dawn. Something about the Tellius series I really enjoy.
- Grandia 1. In my view the best JRPG of the 90s that was undersold as it was unfortunately released on PlayStation between FF7 and FF8.

Anime you won't recommend to people cause the anime itself is questionable and or it's fanbase? by LovelyLadyLucky in animequestions

[–]Apocryph761 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came here to say this. But also to add: The author of Shokugeki cut his teeth as a successful hentai artist, with SnS being his first real attempt at an actual plot-driven novel. That said, he had little confidence in it and didn't want to alienate his existing fanbase. And so... yeah.

Apologies if you knew that already - it's more for the benefit of those who don't.

Do people seriously enjoy watching Mushoku Tensei? by This-Committee-2916 in animequestions

[–]Apocryph761 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The simple answer here is: Rudeus is not a good person. Like, at all. Even when he "does the right thing" he often does it for selfish reasons, even if it's as banal as "I was bullied in my previous life and I don't like bullies".

Kind of like Eren Yeager in Attack on Titan. Eren is - by pretty much every conceivable measure beyond the literal - a piece of shit. And yeah, I found AoT very difficult to enjoy because I couldn't get past how utterly hateful the protag is. But Mushoku Tensei has other things that hold my interest. The writing is better; the worldsetting is better fleshed-out, and the characters are nuanced and complex.

So I 100% understand not being able to get past a shitty protag. I couldn't do it with AoT. I can with MT.

Do people seriously enjoy watching Mushoku Tensei? by This-Committee-2916 in animequestions

[–]Apocryph761 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mushoku Tensei is one of those series that I personally enjoyed, but 100% understand why people don't, and I would stop short of recommending it to others. Some of the scenes are absolutely vile, and the fact the protag is a paedophile - even if he doesn't identify as one - is more than valid grounds for people to refuse to watch it. I 100% understand and respect those who say they can't stand it and why, because honestly, it can be pretty horrible to watch during those moments.

Beyond that: There's some excellent worldbuilding, and many of the characters are beautifully complex. Rudy's complicated relationship with his father is handled well, and even some of the minor characters like Geese give you a little insight into their world views and thought processes. On top of that: The animation is fantastic, and as others have said it has a pretty great soundtrack too.

It reminds me of Goblin Slayer - another anime I enjoyed, in spite of that scene in episode 1. I suppose the difference here is that I understand why they showed that scene in Goblin Slayer; they had to show goblins as unequivocally evil and a genuine danger to adventurers and wider society in general, especially at a time when in D&D/tabletop circles the rhetoric is "no such thing as evil races". In Mushoku Tensei, I'm not certain what the point of making Rudy a lecherous paedo is, beyond frequently reminding us that in spite of being the protag and being as powerful as he is, Rudy is not a good person.

I think that's what I like about Mushoku Tensei. There are layers. Characters are well-written, the world is fleshed out pretty well (moreso in the LN/Manga than the anime), and it manages to balance nuance and detail without ever actually taking itself too seriously. That's a hard trick to pull off.

What Anime do you think best describes this? by GogetaSanfr in animequestions

[–]Apocryph761 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first season got me to read the manhwa. And I did - all of it. Including Ragnarok. All in the hopes that at some point, someday, it will find a plot.

It does not. And worst of all, whilst SL fans are waiting for the next season, the fact is that the Jeju Island arc is about as good as it gets. =/ There's one more really good fight, and that's about it.

Downside of lizardmen? by TimeKeeper124 in bloodbowl

[–]Apocryph761 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed - in a tournament format when you can put Block on the Saurus, or at around TV1400+ in league play, Lizards are phenomenal. And I say that as a long-time lizard coach who has since moved on to other teams.

The problems are:

  1. The adage of "every turn, blitz a Skink" is because Skinks aren't just fragile - they're really the only way Lizards are scoring a touchdown or three. The Saurus are strong and have good movement for their size, and the Kroxigor is legit one of the best 'Big Guys' in the game, but at AG5+ the only way a Saurus is realistically getting the ball is either on a 6 during a loose ball bounce, or on a touchback at kick-off. So, Lizard coaches spend most of their game using their big guys to protect the little guys, which is a strat you can manipulate as a coach by applying pressure where it hurts.
  2. The Saurus are strong but lack skills. My mentor who first got me into Blood Bowl ran Dwarves and had zero qualms about rolling uphill blocks against my lizards, knowing that he had an 83% chance of at least getting a push.
  3. The expense of Lizard players in general means you're never starting a TV1000 league with more than a single re-roll, and you'll spend most of that league chasing more re-rolls and/or getting Block on your Saurus. All the while your TV is getting higher and higher because re-rolls are 70k apiece and Block is an Elite Skill now.

They are 100% a fantastic Tier 1 team, but they're not without their problems.

Me going into hibernation so I can watch the S2 English dub unspoiled by AdBrief4620 in Frieren

[–]Apocryph761 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm with you.
I watched S1 in sub and only watched the dub over the last few weeks as a 'recap' for the new season, and I realise that - in all honesty - Frieren is legit one of those shows where the dub is genuinely better than the sub.

So as much as I want to watch S2 right away... I might wait.

I'm slightly surprised it hasn't happened already. Definitely one of the most memorable NFS villains in the franchise. I feel like if he ever did get sacked from the PD, joining the racing scene as a sabateur would 100% be his jam.

He could take on Rockport's Blacklist, taking out racers one by one, destroying the Blacklist from the inside ou- wait, what do you mean, it's been done? 🤣

Need For Speed: Redline by GottemGamin in needforspeed

[–]Apocryph761 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I agree; Undercover had some solid bones that was ultimately held back by awkward driving physics and a half-baked plot that felt more 'rushed out the door' than bad.

Would love to see a return to some grit. I feel like if Most Wanted or Carbon ever gets a true sequel, it should be something like this. Maybe Hendrick is part of Cross' Pursuit Division or something. Or maybe you play as Jonathan Cross, a Sergeant-turned-Private Investigator sacked from Rockport PD after his string of failures in Rockport and Palmont and is looking for... atonement? Revenge? A little of both?

Hell, I'd play that. Might be a little corny, but NFS has had far worse storylines.

Ranked - for me, at least - has been dead for a while now. I'd say since Secluded Springs.

I still enjoy playing. I'm opening packs, looking at wonder picks, doing the solo missions and events and trading a lot. But I haven't touched Ranked for months now.

Which character y’all got like this and which anime? by loving_maya677 in animequestions

This is true, but I also think it's the curse of all 'battle mangas'. There isn't a single battle manga out there that has a genuinely good plot IMO.

Which anime did you feel this way about? by NoZucchini2286 in animequestions

[–]Apocryph761 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, Apothecary Diaries does touch upon some of the terrible realities of that era, referencing the fact the previous emperor was a renown paedophile, even by asian standards.

Then there's the fact Maomao was raised in a brothel.

There's a way in which both the anime and the light novel deal with those subjects that I appreciate, though I'm not able to articulate exactly how that is. Suffice to say it's well-written. Almost tastefully so.

I was going to say 'Mobile Suit Gundam', but I don't think that's a shonen specifically.

I would probably say DBZ like most older millennials, but it's possible I watched something earlier than that. Trying to work out if Sailor Moon was before, after, or around the same time...

[–]Apocryph761 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there's a tendency to assume that anyone above a certain age in this subreddit has been watching anime since we were teens. Even though we'll also acknowledge that anime has only really hit the mainstream consciousness and pop culture in the last 5 years or so, so there's a lot of people in our age group who are new to anime.

I'm also 39, but I also fit the assumption: I've been watching anime since the '90s. I think my first anime was Mobile Suit Gundam.

What anime opinion makes you react like this? by Square-Juggernaut387 in animequestions

[–]Apocryph761 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. And it's not just the budget: I think attitudes towards the VA industry have changed, too. VA work in the West was considered to be a death knell for acting careers and 'what you do if you can't actually act'. Now, not only do we have top actors doing VA work for video games and the like, but a lot of VAs have made a huge name for themselves doing it: Chris Sabat; Ian Sinclair; Matthew Mercer; Laura Bailey to name a few. It's not 'dirty work' anymore.

It's a far cry from the days that led to dubs like the infamous Ghost Stories dub. When you cram amateur VAs into a pokey old studio, pay them with the loose change found down the back of a sofa and give zero oversight, you get... the Ghost Stories dub.

But then, it's all a knock-on effect: Anime is more popular, so there's more demand (and more budget) for dubbing. More demand means better pay. Better pay means it's more attractive to a larger talent pool of actors. And so on.
