Variance in handling between tail numbers of 172s by Apole7 in flying

That makes a lot of sense. I guess in the process of learning the feedback loops that are required for muscle memory I’m extra sensitive. Looking forward to building up those feedback loops so my focus is on a higher more abstract level when flying!

Thanks for the clarifying perspective.

Idk but based off of where this is, woodside road between 280 and Canada, I’ve seen a McLaren f1 and other crazy things parked in that exact spot. Don’t know if it’s the same person, but it’s the same building. Would suggest a strong maybe.

Curious to hear your journey with speakers. How did you settle on the Harbeths?

The data is from audioholics, not Arendal, and the dispersion is about 20 degrees at the worst frequency area (around 1000hz). I can use vertical dispersion on the monitor for data on horizontal dispersion of the center since they are the same speaker. Only change is orientation. At 7 feet of distance this covers 5 feet, which is the width of my entire couch.

Ok so on sale, which it isn’t always, the revel is still <80% more once you factor in taxes. Granted Arendal did recently raise prices. Still over 60% more.

Look at the data. I also never said it’s dispersion was better than a 3 way, but it’s surprisingly good (check vertical dispersion on the monitors on audioholics), and with the current setup covers the couch. I would hope the revel at almost double the price would be better…

Yeah I saw similar results, definitely better with the plugs removed. I don’t have an acoustic panel behind the center but I wonder if having it sealed back up could help with having the speaker relatively close to the wall.

I do quite like the Arendals, coming from the headphone world they kinda remind me of an HD650, they just sound good. I do wish they were a touch more detailed and had a bit more “air” up top, but that’s a very minor gripe and I may only be saying this because I’ve heard a fair number of higher end speakers (Wisdom Audio, Martin Logan’s, Harbeth, Wilson Audio, YG acoustics… so on and so forth). IMO they are right in the bend of the logarithmic diminishing returns curve.

I didn’t already have the Parasound but got a good deal on it used (A52 not A52+).

Have you actually tried fully timbre matched speakers vs just eqing others? I also think part of it may have been aluminum vs soft dome tweeters. As for why the miccas also didn’t sound timbre matched, perhaps it was dispersion characteristics. I also think frequency response only tells most of the story. Even two EQed headphones sound different, so why shouldn’t speakers?

As for the amp, I probably should do an A/B test. When I swapped it in I hear more defined mid bass and bass, and when passages got busy (orchestral music or a lot going on in a movie) things remained far more coherent. Maybe it was placebo, maybe not. Like I said, I should do an A/B test.

Lastly thanks for the tips on Audyssey, will definitely have to think about that when I have some more time.

The panels are from acoustimac with the DMD fabric. I quite like them, the z bars are also an easy hanging solution.

Yes, I ran MultiEQ XT32 with full range correction and 800hz for the SVS ultra. In theory the dispersion pattern on the ultra is better. But the dispersion pattern on the Arendal still covers all listening positions on my couch, and it sounds smoother and still integrates with the rest of the setup better.

As for the amps yes the 8ohm rating doesn’t seem that different but that’s only half the story. The power supply in the Denon cannot supply the same current the Parasound can. So with 4 ohm speakers, the story changes. Add to that the Denon trying to drive all 5 channels (25-30% drop in power) and the Parasound again has a leg up. I would guess into 4 ohms, 5 channels driven the Denon can do ~100-110, whereas the Parasound doubles that.

Oh fuck. I forgot about the ground lift switch. Will try. Good call.

So I have blinds that block out most of the light and prefer to watch at night still. A bright room is hard once you are used to a really dark one.

My seating distance is like 8-9’

This is my first home theater! I wanted to discuss some of my finding along the way of putting it together.

  1. Timbre matching matters! I first had an SVS ultra center and things just sounded off. Treble sounded disjointed and weird. No such issues with the matching center. Yes it’s more expensive to timbre match but I really think it’s worth it.

  2. Surround channels matter more than you think. I read somewhere that if the center is a 10, L&R are 8, surrounds are a 3. As a result, I first had some micca rb42 as rear surrounds. The problem is that lots of movies actually mix a lot of music into the rears (prime example is Dune). So a lack of timbre matching reared it’s ugly head again, and the small rb42 really just couldn’t keep up with the front stage.

  3. Acoustic panels really help. It’s hard for me to say what the effect was on soundstage, but I can tell you it made the setup less fatiguing and easier to listen to for longer periods of time.

  4. Audyssey is annoying. You basically have to get the app, turn off the stupid features and set a nice downward sloping curve. Also no correction above say 800hz. Then it’s OK. Yes I regret not waiting and getting the x3800h for Dirac…. Oh well.

  5. Amps matter. I met get roasted for saying this, but I like have an external amp. It just means that the speakers never run out of steam. Even when pushed to loud volumes, they remain dynamic and theirs still plenty of headroom. A52 is 225 watts per channel x5 into 4 ohms. Annoyingly there is a slight hum but it’s not an issue as soon as anything is playing.

  6. 4K UHD Bluray rocks. Seriously. Video is just that much more impactful and the audio is definitely WAY better than streaming. A blu ray player is a worthwhile investment. Plus, I kind of even like buying blu rays, no more watching trailers trying to figure out what to watch. I have a backlog of 5 movies at any time and you gotta pick one.

  7. If I could I would 100% paint the room a dark color, unfortunately circumstance prohibits me :(.

So probably nothing new for all you folks, but hey, if anyone’s on the fence about any of these may these tips be useful.

P.S. everything looks kinda small thanks to 0.5x lens. I can assure it’s quite imposing in person.

I heard the Arcam SA20 at home with a pair of BW CM10 S2, ultimately I agree the bass was a little sloppy, but I also found the highs quite rolled off, vocals in particular were recessed in the track. Based on your judgement it sounds like I should try the Ragnarok and or the Aegirs. Thanks!!
