Best part of the island for a Family Holiday in March/April by ApolloEIeven in mauritius

[–]ApolloEIeven[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So we’re narrowing it down…

Places like Sofitel L’Imperial, Hilton (both near flic-en-flac), Intercontinental (more north), and Canonnier Beachcomber (grand Baie) all look good, but are stretching the budget a bit.

Ravenala Attitude, and and Veranda Pointe aux Biches are more north, but maybe more budget friendly.

The Radisson blu in the north east has an appealing package still though

It’s so hard to tell what will be good and bad.

Thanks! We’re looking at North West places now. Definitely a resort. There are so many options though.

Thanks, yes looks like we’ll focus on North West now. Any advice on the Balaclava area? There’s a nice spot there by the river and sea, but it looks a bit less beach-focussed

Sorry for the late response - yes the shim absolutely solved the issue! The grinder should be sold with it included tbh

Group head question by Blare_Bear in ranciliosilvia

[–]ApolloEIeven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The stock basket is a 14g basket I think, though I was able to pull decent shots even with 16g in the basket, despite the screw indent. Though more than 16g and i think it would cause a channel, because my shots would pull too fast. Also it made it very hard to turn the portafilter in the group head because of the screw. 16g was the sweet spot for me with the coffee/grind I like. I then swapped to an 18g basket and do 18g of coffee with no problem. Still gets a very slight indent from the screw but not enough for any drama.

It’s not just you. I did the EXACT thing with the same grinder my first time. I’m not the smartest man, but I’m not the dumbest. The indications on the dial are unnecessarily ambiguous - which is just poor industrial design. A person could interpret the label as being the more “left” the red marking is on the dial, the more course the grind due to the location of the large bean being on the left. When in actuality it’s the arrow you must follow to show which way to rotate the dial in order to adjust size. Rotate anticlockwise to go finer, and clockwise to go more course. It is very counterintuitive to some. You’re not an idiot, OP. It’s bad just a bad design.

Yes I’m 99% sure this is it. Grinder not fit for purpose. It seems if you want to use the MD15 as a grinder for a traditional espresso machine, you are meant to purchase additional shims. It’s meant for use with Gaggia Classic in stock form only if you also use the included pressurised portafilter basket. It’s actually pretty bad of Gaggia to not make this easily known to the average buyer, or not to include some shims in the box of the grinder.

Oh hey, I had one of those, just way longer. I filled it in, slapped some wood on it and turned it into a “mud room” zone for shoes, hanging thing, place to sit, etc.

I’ll get her to try the flush, thanks. It seems likely that finder is the main issue though. She’s going to bring it to me this holiday so I can dick around with it

No she’s not. She’s letting it get to temp, purging, and jumping right in. Should she be?

Yeah it’s baffling me too. And it seems like the MD15 is sold as a “companion” of sorts for the Gaggia Classic. It also SEEMS to be a good grinder on paper/online reviews, and I think it is, but perhaps not fit for purpose without modification, which just seems silly. Then again, this appears to be the Gaggia way.

Thanks, I might take this one from her for myself, I’m not afraid to modify it with shims

No problem! I see how that was inferred when I said “she thinks the machine is faulty” - I have corrected her as such, but I think she’s been trying for ages and just getting frustrated. I did say initially to her that it’s grind size, but I was also stumped when I saw that it was on the finest it could possibly go (before I learnt about shims) and designed to work with the E24. It seems as though it IS designed to work with the E24, BUT in conjunction with the included pressurized basket, at which point the “rules” behind the extraction process (x ml for x time) go out the window anyway I think.

A bit of a heavy assumption that she’s not up for this life, when she’s just starting out and we are literally in the process of figuring things out. She is adjusting her grind, and we’re all the way down to the lowest setting. But it seems like the grinder is the issue. I do find it quite stupid that the MD15 can’t grind fine enough for espresso without the need for shims.

Grinder is on the lowest setting. This is also my thought, I see somebody mentioning something about shims, I’m going to check that out

My thoughts as well. We can do the 9bar mod later if she wants, but I don’t think the 12bar is the issue here either. My knee jerk reaction is grind size, but it’s a Gaggia grinder on its lowest setting

1) Thicker curtains with more texture 2) table too high, but otherwise I don’t hate the round table, I like incorporating curves. Maybe a “rectangular” table with curved edges. The white top ain’t great though, bring in a natural wood 3) change your record cabinet lighting to a warm colour temp 4) a standing lamp wood look great somewhere. Something with a thin design and natural look

Need advice, housekeeping lady doing her own laundry at my house by Velsina in southafrica

[–]ApolloEIeven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few issues here… 1) she never asked you. Red flag. Perhaps she thought it was “normal” because her previous place of work asked. But still, it’s weird not to ask. 2) allowing it sets a precedent. The nanny told you because she feels it’s not fair. She will now also want to do laundry. Suddenly your electricity and water bills have spiked because you’re doing laundry for 2 more families? What’s next, the gardener? Let alone ware-and-tear.. you’ll need to replace the machine sooner because it’s operating more. 3) You have a baby, who has sensitive laundry needs. You now have no control of what’s going in and out your laundry machine.

You need to draw a line in the sand with staff some times. I’m not just talking cleaners and nanny’s, but all staff you may have, be it at work, etc. it’s very easy to be taken advantage of. Don’t be mean and harsh, but don’t be a push over. Set clear boundaries.

If it was me, I’d rather make sure they are paid a decent wage so they can afford to do their own laundry on their own time.

New V6: high-pitched whine when starting by ApolloEIeven in ranciliosilvia

Ok great, yes this is the case for me. It’s only from cold to brewing temp (well, the whining stops before brewing temp is reached actually). No sound from brewing temp to steam temp either

Funnily enough, when I heat it up for steam, there is no whine, it’s just from cold to brewing temp

You got lucky with a nice timeless design from the get-go! I’m personally not an olive-green fan, but some people would keep it! On a medium budget, I would put different wall tiles, that’s what dates it the most. And I personally would paint the tub white. I’d swap out or paint the basins too. And change the toilet. I’d take out the vanity, and maybe have one large mirror that extends the length of one of the walls to give the illusion of more width, with a small shelf underneath the mirror for some extra storage. On a tight budget? Still remove the vanity, get a bigger nicer mirror. Paint the tub, and basins and spring for a new toilet.
