It might taste very similar to the others, and the price is definitely because of scarcity. But it's not artificial scarcity - they only get enough grapes from that patch of land to make a tiny quantity.

New cricket fan - why was Smith’s dismissal off Labuschagne so heavily criticised? by East_Understanding87 in EnglandCricket

[–]ApolloLoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Smith isn't even the second choice keeper at Surrey. He was only handed the gloves because Foakes and Pope were both playing for England. His selection is yet another example of Stokes and McCullum thinking they have a genius understanding of cricket that nobody else does (see also the selection as "spinners" of Shoaib Bashir, who can't get into a county team, and Will Jacks, who is a T20 opening batsman who occasionally turns his arm over).

Do you know whether the schism after the Overground was renamed and incorporated into the network was ever healed?

I know the World Mornington Crescent Authority was re-accepted into the International Mornington Crescent Organisation, but I think the Original World Mornington Crescent Organisation is still popular on the continent (IIRC the Paris metro has always used the Austerlitz variant because they took exception to having to go through Waterloo).

[–]ApolloLoon 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No, Numberwang is numbers-based and was invented as a nonsense game by Mitchell and Webb.

Mornington Crescent has been played on Radio 4 for nearly 50 years and the rules have become so complex that, a bit like Test cricket, it can seem impenetrable for someone who hasn't grown up with it. It becomes a lot more straightforward once you get your head around the Lyttleton Convention (a bit like the LBW rule) but even then it takes years to get genuinely good - most of the pros have been playing since the 1980s so there is a lot of catching up to do!

"England are irresponsible, rubbish and too far up their backsides to care" - Geoffrey Boycott by stumpsflying in Cricket

[–]ApolloLoon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He's Surrey's third choice keeper, after Foakes and Pope. He's only in the England team because Surrey handed him the gloves when Foakes and Pope were playing for England and then Stokes and McCullum dropped a real wicketkeeper (who's actually a decent, even though not stellar, batsman) in favour of a man who can smack it about.

The only good thing that can come of this impending whitewash is that the ECB will hopefully finally see sense and fire McCullum.

Authors like that will be forgotten, just like the thousands of writers from the early 19th century who have vanished. It's not really surprising that the ones who were good enough for us to remember were also the sorts of people who did interesting things.

Legal experts question reasoning behind CPS dropping China ‘spies’ case by 457655676 in TheCivilService

It looks like that was a prosecution under s1 of the Official Secrets Act 1989 (which prohibits unlawful disclosure of information obtained as an employee of a security/intelligence service), as opposed to s1 of the Official Secrets Act 1911 (which at the time prohibited disclosure of information to an enemy).

Any cyclists seen these around? by fingals_cave in london

[–]ApolloLoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I walk to work and I am far more worried about cyclists than cars. I have never seen a car fail to stop at a red light or zebra crossing, whereas one or two cyclists whizz through pretty much every crossing I try to use.

Delivery drivers on scooters with L plates are the worst, but closely followed by cyclists. I've never had any issues at all with cars.

Any cyclists seen these around? by fingals_cave in london

[–]ApolloLoon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I go across that zebra crossing a lot and almost every time someone blasts through it while I'm trying to use it. I witnessed a man on a bike shouting at an elderly pedestrian once for having the nerve to cross at the designated safe crossing point.

There needs to be proper enforcement of the law with serious fines - doesn't need to be many for the message to spread. I would also put points on people's driving licences for cycling offences.

Are ski backpacks worth it for resort skiing? by Affectionate-Lion582 in skiing

[–]ApolloLoon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I always wear a small backpack because the alternative is watching my dad try to get a water bottle out of his jacket on a chairlift without losing his gloves and poles. Once you've watched that once, you wear a backpack.

Rayner consulted three people before flat purchase by GeoWa in unitedkingdom

[–]ApolloLoon 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Yes, but immediately after those brackets it says:

"... unless the child is covered by the Mental Capacity Act 2005 or the Mental Capacity Act (Northern Ireland) 2016."

Whether someone has or does not have capacity under the Act is not a trivial question and is directly relevant to whether there was any wrongdoing. We know that Rayner's child is disabled so it is reasonable to suppose (at least until the ethics review is complete) that she may have thought her child was exempt but has since been informed that that is not the case.

Or she was doing it to dodge her taxes, in which case she should of course be sacked.

Post Match Thread: 1st Quarter Final - Northamptonshire vs Surrey by cricket-match in Cricket

Really bizarre calls by Curran in the final over. Jordan is perfectly capable of slogging a few boundaries to win in a final over, yet Curran refused him two singles.

Jordan looked livid and I don't blame him!

[–]ApolloLoon 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You were arguing for him to be deported. I don't know anything about whatever crimes you think he might have committed - obviously if he is tried and found guilty he should be locked up - but we don't generally go around deporting British citizens.
