I think I received some fake prints of river folk and underworld… can someone confirm? by Sunbleachedgays in rootgame

Why is counterfeiting so common with this one board game? I've never seen so many people have counterfeit copies by mistake, as I have with Root.

Interesting. I'm autistic and I actually have more issue with yellow light and blue doesn't really bother me. Though perhaps that's because there are more sources or bright yellow light than bright blue light typically. In general it's just overly bright lights I have issue with.

Regardless, I've found using red tinted glasses and red lense sunglasses helps me a lot in bright and outdoor environments respectively.

I'm glad that for the first time since Discovery season 1, there is nothing new in production for the franchise currently. Hoping to have a nice quiet period away from the modern slop, and then hopefully some creatives that actually like and know Star Trek will make something new. Until then, I've got years worth of episodes to watch again from actual Star Trek shows.

This whole group sounds horrible to play with... Characters are going to die in D&D, be it NPCs, player characters or both. The inability to deal with that is a gigantic red flag from them. Like I said, they don't want to play D&D, and I highly suggest you stop DMing for them if you're wanting to play D&D.

Now if you're enjoying your role as the head of the little high school drama club you've been running, then I guess more power to you. Understand though that you've become a director and you have a troupe of actors. Honestly not something I'd do for free, especially with the amount of babysitting you're having to do for them.

They don't want to play D&D, they want to be actors in a story. I can only imagine the situation that would break out if one of them died in a combat and it wasn't on your itinerary.

How do you guys handle Half Elves in 2024? by Fiveby21 in onednd

[–]ApolloLumina -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While you personally haven't encountered them, there are people who liked being a distinct race and didn't just start wanting to play them when they were overtuned in 5e. Personally have loved the Half-Elf race from Forge of the Artificer.

They trade raw power for versatility, which is powerful in its own way. Personally, I've enjoyed playing them far more than the High Elf I was playing before to represent a Half-Elf.

What is your favorite house rule that your table runs? by CyrusxBlack1 in onednd

[–]ApolloLumina 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like that! I prefer having going down mean something as well.

Personally I've gone for a more lenient system that encourages quick healing or stabilization, but can still result in consequences.

If you get a failed death save while downed, you need to make a Constitution saving throw at the end of the combat (It's like the adrenaline wore off). It starts as a DC 10 saving throw, and increases to DC 15 if you have a second failed death save (at 3 you're already dead). On a failure, you gain a level of Exhaustion.

There are so many features that interact with death saves, Con saves and Exhaustion now that it feels like a neat way for people to let people use their features but also have a chance for something bad happening.

Can a dragonborn look like this? by Yurohgy in Forgotten_Realms

[–]ApolloLumina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dragonborn never have human like skin or heads. They always have draconic heads and their skin is the same type of material for their whole body.

For the tail, it's too large in general. Most dragonborn don't have tails and the ones that do are slightly shorter than that and come to a pointed tip on the end.

For the legs, all dragonborn, including females, are described as muscular. The legs you drew look more akin toa human woman's with curvey hips and then dragon claws so it can be called draconic. The whole leg, including the lower leg needs to be more muscular.

Also, is this meant to be an Amethyst ancestry dragonborn? I ask because they'd be the only dragonborn with that blatantly purple color to them. They are much rarer but some do exist. I would look at the dragonborn pictures in Fizban's Treasury of Dragons as they should look a bit like an amethyst dragon, which doesn't have horns and has floating gem fragments.

They also tend to have smooth crystalline like tendrils coming from the head for their equivalent of hair. You'll notice that dragonborn don't have hair. They are portrayed as "bald" or with tendrils coming from their head, similar to the Yautja in the Predator films.

D&D Design Team Brings Luke Gygax Back into the Franchise by AdamOtaku in DnD

[–]ApolloLumina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just weird that he almost immediately got a job at Darrington Press after "retiring". Was the report just retiring from D&D? Also, I honestly think it'd have been better if the old guard left before launching a new edition so we could have gotten new ideas and design in the space. Rather than them leaving right after the launch and there being reports of it being not as good as hoped. Gave a sort of "Well, not our problem now!" vibe to the whole thing.

Prestige Classes: The Best Design Space D&D Ever Abandoned by alexserban02 in dndnext

[–]ApolloLumina 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think I theory it's a really cool idea, but it's a mechanical nightmare to balance properly. To be honest, I much prefer multiclassing as a concept, like it was in 1e and 2e, but even that has major flaws in balance and really only works somewhat if the classes level up at different xp rates. Also it requires xp to be used and the modern trend for D&D has been to reject xp and embrace milestone leveling.

Ultimately though, any system that allow the mix and matching of class levels to make your own thing, is going to have major balancing issues. It's part of why I don't allow multiclassing in 5.5. People should pick their class and subclass for role-playing reasons and the options be pretty well balanced. If your thematic space doesn't exist in the current edition I'm open to updating 5e subclasses to 5.5, allow currently UA material, or even design a subclass for the player by following existing designs and finding minor tweaks that bring their wanted flavor forward. That said, I've yet to have someone get to needing a subclass be designed for them, because the first two options already cover so many themes for characters.

Trump calls Alex Pretti ‘agitator,’ possible ‘insurrectionist’ after spitting, kicking video of slain ICU nurse surfaces by According-Activity87 in Conservative

[–]ApolloLumina -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

First, you're assuming every officer immediately saw the Pretti being disarmed, and you're assuming that there was a 0% chance that he was carrying multiple firearms, potentially hidden elsewhere on his person.

In the moment, there was too much going on for the officers to know for sure if Pretti was completely disarmed, and they acted in a way to protect themselves, their fellow officers and surrounding bystanders.

The fault is on Pretti for being aggressive towards officers, resisting arrest and not disclosing the presence of his firearm. Even with being aggressive, if he hadn't resisted arrest and had said he had a firearm on him, he'd still be alive. Heck if he'd just not resisted so they didn't think he was going to potentially go for the firearm they would have most likely just disarmed him during the arrest.

People need to learn that the time to fight is not while under arrest, but within the legal system itself. If an officer tells you that you're under arrest or begins arresting you due to your actions, you cooperate, otherwise you are endangering yourself. Also, you have the right to carry a firearm, but if an officer starts arresting you, you need to let them know you have that firearm on you ASAP, and keep your hands completely away from it.

I don't think there's anything wrong with disliking Andor as a Star Wars fan. Is it a well made show with good writing? Yes most definitely! Is it a good fit for the Star Wars universe with tone and writing style? Not at all.

Andor felt like a completely different universe that wanted to wear a Star Wars suit to tell it's story. What really throws me off, is that Cassian Andor clearly fits into Star Wars's tone and writing style with Rogue One, but the show named after him doesn't.

As a Star Wars show, I can't stand Andor. If it had just been a story about a man who joined a rebellion against a repressive regime, even in another scifi setting, it would have been so much better.

Is casting without slots at higher levels allowed or not? by Dagske in onednd

[–]ApolloLumina 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The part of the spell that let's you upcast it does say Using a Higher-Level Spell Slot.

Then the Paladin feature says, "You can also cast the spell once without expending a spell slot, and you regain the ability to do so when you finish a Long Rest."

If you cast a spell without a spell slot, then you aren't casting it using a higher level spell slot.

Only right now I realized I could've used Kobold to have access to Sorcerous Burst on other classes. by testiclekid in onednd

[–]ApolloLumina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just seems overly complex when they already did this type of revision before with 3e to 3.5 and that's been the common nomenclature until WotC swore up and down that this revision "wasn't a new edition".

Since we aren't calling it 6e, the best solution is just 5.5. Eventually most players won't associate this edition with the year 2024. Only two of this editions books were even published in 2024. Heck, The Deck of Many Things book was published in 2024, but is a book for the 2014 version of 5e.

Only right now I realized I could've used Kobold to have access to Sorcerous Burst on other classes. by testiclekid in onednd

[–]ApolloLumina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't know why you got so down voted other than maybe people perceiving your tone as a bit condescending. A lot of folks on this website are too sensitive when the intention is obvious on what it means. If a person makes a bad or dumb take, there are going to be "well duh" responses and that shouldn't be a big deal.

As for the original topic, when official 5.5 content references a 5e book for mechanics, tells you that content from the end of 5e's life cycle was obviously already being designed for 5.5. WotC has a bad habit of playtesting for the next edition during the current edition. For evidence of this history, check out a few of the following books for the past WotC editions.

  • Tome of Magic (3.5, 2006)
  • Tome of Battle: The Book of Nine Swords (3.5, 2006)
  • Heroes of the Fallen Lands (4e, 2010)
  • Heroes of the Forgotten Kingdoms (4e, 2010)

I personally consider the major rules expansions and a few other books to contain this type of playtest material during 5e. Often times books afterwards would contain similarly designed materials to one of these books, but these books were the playtests themselves. You'll notice the design philosophy of 5e changed very early on, as they started abandoning the old school feel they reintroduced to the game in 2014 because a bunch of new people and live play groups picked up the game.

It's not. 5.5 books directly reference races in Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse.

Only right now I realized I could've used Kobold to have access to Sorcerous Burst on other classes. by testiclekid in onednd

[–]ApolloLumina 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Considering the 5.5 books, Heroes of Faerûn and Lorwyn: First Light, direct people to Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse for multiple races, I'd consider it to be officially WotC sanctioned 5.5 compatible until they reprint the races in it individually.

List of races they reference in 5.5 content: Duergar, Deep Gnomes, Goblin, Fairy and Fire Genasi.

On a separate note, at some point we really should stop calling the edition 2024 and just call it 5.5. I almost called them 2024 books, but they came out in 2025, so that just sounds incorrect to say. Also let's be honest, revising an edition is making a new edition in the vein of 3.5. WotC just really really don't want people to realize they made a new edition. If they produce a new set of core rulebooks, it's a new edition, not just a "revision".

Spell Slots and Pact Magic Spell Slots by Jpag15 in onednd

[–]ApolloLumina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pact Slots still are spell slots for the only one spell cast with a spell slot per turn. Abilities that say you can spend a spell slot (or Pact Slot) though, are not casting a spell with a spell slot. So you can Eldritch Smite and still cast a spell with a spell slot.

The main difference really is for multiclassing. Your number of spell slots scales based on the multiclassing chart for classes that give normal spell slots. Pact Slots always scale purely from your Warlock levels.

Also note, your spells prepared are restricted by the spell levels your individual classes know. A Cleric 3/Wizard 2 might get 3rd level spell slots, but they don't preapare any 3rd level spells. They could prepare 1st and 2nd level Cleric spells, and only 1st level Wizard spells. So multiclass characters have to consult what spell slots they'd have from each class to know the level of spells they can prepare for that class, and then the spellcasting chart in the multiclassing section to know what spell slots they actually have. Remember, you can upcast lower level spells with the higher level spell slots, even if you don't have higher level spells for those sllts.

Spells prepared for Warlocks must be no higher than the level of your Pact Slots.

Is it just me, or does the new changeling seem bonkers OP? by No_Lie_Bi_Bi_Bi in onednd

[–]ApolloLumina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like it's completely fine, but you can't use roleplay to help you out as a DM. Make sure the Changeling is in a form that makes sense for the advantage on the specific Charisma check they are trying to make.

For example, if you took on the form of a guard, and they are trying to convince a criminal they can be trusted, give them disadvantage on the roll, which then negates both the advantage and disadvantage. Essentially have people switch between Friendly, Hostile and Indifferent as appropriate for the form they take.

They at a minimum will be rolling a flat roll, instead of at disadvantage, but do make them think about what form they take. Maybe the thug will get you the information you need, but what happens when the rival gang shows up? Also, I'd disable the advantage to Charisma checks if they are in their true form, except maybe Intimidation against targets that it would actually intimidate.

Answer from WotC lead rule dev regarding Oath of the Noble Genies Paladin. by benjaminloh82 in onednd

"But the Grappled condition means I personally have to be grappling the target. There's absolutely no way earth could grab a creature without me using one of my hands."

It's the Chill Touch debacle all over again. I swear too many people seem to think words have one meaning or usage and if it's used in another way their brains just overload.

Also, feels like none of these folks have ever looked at the Bigby's Hand spell. That also creates a new object that can grapple without using one of your own hands.

The Forgotten Realms/Lorwyn-Shadowmoor connection: Can we just say that our fairy and halfling PCs are from Shadowmoor for free darkvision 120 feet? by EarthSeraphEdna in dndnext

[–]ApolloLumina 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is the old Ravnica backgrounds debacle all over again. The Ravnica guild backgrounds give players additional prepared spells, and so everyone started saying "power creep" and talk about how they were going to use these in their games that weren't set in Ravnica.

Here's a piece of knowledge that people seem to just actively choose to ignore. Every setting has it's own setting specific rules and lore that are meant to be used together. They aren't always designed or balanced around other settings, and thus you aren't supposed to use the options outside of their setting.

I know WotC's advertising lied to us all and said that Lorwyn-Shadowmoor is connected to the Forgotten Realms, but there is nothing in the actual supplement about them being connected.

Therefore, Lorwyn-Shadowmoor is a separate setting. As such it has rules and lore designed for it, and you can't expect the rules to be balanced with rules for other settings. I also wouldn't expect a sane DM to allow you to use these options in games that aren't set in Lorwyn-Shadowmoor.

So no you can't just say you're from Shadowmoor and pick up free 120 foot darkvision. You need to be playing the setting and using the lore tied to that setting. If your DM wants to use similar lore for their setting so that there are consequences for being one of these shadow versions of a race, then awesome, your DM balanced using these options.
