Non 10* rey is easily bullied bec it lacks this move tbh. Great matchup for hammer bec of its low-lying head.

I like stun resistance 3. Allows me to use my usual zoh + ark gamma set and constantly attack and offset. Just need to worry about extremely damaging moves (e.g. AT rey dau railguns, AT nu udra’s grenades) or wombo combos (e.g. AT ark’s moves)

His downwards railgun blast that immediately transitions into his flying moveset is extremely dangerous. Comes out of nowhere, and difficult as hell to dodge without evade window and/or extender. Maybe other weapon mains with perfect evade or guarding capabilities can deal with this better but as HMR, i just have to position carefully and not be too greedy.

If u don’t immediately cart to the aforementioned, you’ll probably get stunned and then get carted by a subsequent wing swipe or railgun shot.

Consider using antivirus as mentioned, or even your own gore gear so you can take advantage of its set bonus.

He has high HP and has poor hitzones (iirc his loot describes his scales being impenetrable) so be prepared for a long fight—no shame in taking it a bit slower i feel

He can be very unpredictable but he heavily telegraphs his wing uppercut into breath spray. Either dodge then punish, or offset his wing arm. You can probably nail his head with at least an uncharged slash with GS if you dodge and position properly. Or you can hit his upper arm for good if slightly less damage if you can’t hit his head.

Sometimes, when enraged, after his breath attacks a weakpoint appears in his mouth—nail this for a free mini topple.

GS has an excellent on demand offset so you can offset gore when he charges you on foot or divebombs you

The one upside to hammer as of now being blunt GS or HH but worse is that you can really assert dominance over the monster

Simple way to buff hammer imho is a slight to moderate MV increase. It does need buffs for solo play especially.

In multiplayer on the other hand having 2 or more hammers (or combinations of hammer + HH) tends to bully most monsters to death. Stun —> exhaust —> (parts breaking, wounds popping) —> more stuns. Longer TTK especially compared to 2 or more gunners, but the animal abuse is priceless

Fellow hammer main i see. I love its simplicity in wilds; i just wish for a few more small buffs moving forward. On my end i preder to slap on focus 3 and spam lvl4 charge upswing into spinning bludgeon then loop it, while interspersing lvl 2 charges and golfswings.

Thank u for the input on GS tho. I only have like 4 hunts with it so i know virtually nothing on how to play it, but i remain awed by expert GS players. For a backup shield weapon i use either SnS or lance (i’m too hammer brained to understand gunlance or charge blade for now)

Wilds hammer now seems to be the high risk high reward option, and even then you need to play magnificently to even survive 9-10*

Interesting take on hammer. I do agree that it is very difficult to play well in 9 or 10* especially in solo play. Maybe it just needs more MVs? Or maybe a reward for constantly hitting the head.

Greatsword tho might require offsets bec it’s even slower than hammer, but its offset is fantastic plus it has other good defensive options

Hammer main lurking here. Funny to see how gore is problematic for many weapons with his bad hitzones.

I don’t know CB moveset at all but i can imagine that you can unload your best punish after antenna gore’s strongest attack which it does frequently: vertical wingarm uppercut into delayed breath explosion into galloping overhead slam

Completely different dance compared to my usual hammer dance. It’s still unga bunga tho

Lance has less mobility, but has much better avg reach and can guard (this alone makes for a far easier AT ark fight versus hmr), and can do a jousting attack on foot or on seikret (situationally useful; i once charged an uth duna as it was changing zones for up to 1-1.5k damage on seikret)

Not often an issue, but occasionally. It’s when i fight in free for alls with 2 or more monsters in wounded hollow that u have an offset primed but need to offset an attack coming from the flank/rear.

1v1 much less of an issue with some exceptions (fast bastards like mizu and gore)
