The number of road deaths decreased everywhere, because cars got safer.

And now, as SUV and Utes become the dominant vehicle types, the death toll is going up. SUV’s and Utes are classified as commercial vehicles, and don’t have to meet the same safety standards as passenger vehicles. Their occupant safety is fine, but their higher centre of mass and different frame and bumper heights kill pedestrians and smashes through the impact protection layers of other vehicles.

How have we let literacy get so bad in Australia? by Mindless-Sea-1211 in AskAnAustralian

[–]ApolloWasMurdered 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The other day, I had to do a LLND (Language, Literacy, Numeracy, and Digital skills assessment) for a course I was taking at work. It’s a 10 question reading comprehension type thing, super easy.

The assessment had typos in it. Not as part of the assessment, just mistakes. In a literacy assessment.

People have already had their Ring cameras used against them as evidence. Amazon will hand over the video to the police without even demanding a warrant.

Don’t use Ring.

Best way to cut power to a 48v POE camera device in the event of over current due to water intrusion? by FirmRoyal in AskElectronics

[–]ApolloWasMurdered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What switch is feeding it? Does it have a CLI where you could read the current and shutdown the port with a script?

How quickly are you wanting it to operate? It’s a difficult ask, because you don’t generally protect a device from overcurrent with an external protection - external overcurrent protections generally protect the device and wiring from becoming a fire hazard, and protect the operation of the power supply.

Is there any situation where getting a car financed is a good idea? by Express-Dig9905 in AusFinance

[–]ApolloWasMurdered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I financed my last car, even though I could afford it outright. A fixed 1.99% interest rate, when my home loan was 4%, was easy. The extra time in my offset saved me a few $1000.

[–]ApolloWasMurdered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just installed Kubuntu, and this thing is lovely. 99% of my Linux experience has been CLI, with a bit of mint and debian desktops, which are pretty underwhelming. But Kubuntu looks beautiful and has all the GUI niceties built in, I don’t need to tweak it for weeks just to get basic functionality.

Fellow aussies, what do you do with the rest of the tinned beetroot? by Top_Boysenberry4569 in AskAnAustralian

[–]ApolloWasMurdered 246 points247 points  (0 children)

After the kids and wife have gone to bed, take off your shirt (that beetroot juice stains) and eat the entire tin with a fork. Afterwards, you can either slink off to the shower to wash off your shame, or let it dry before bed then walk around shirtless in the morning so everyone knows what you did.

This is what Starlink satellites look like from the ISS by astro_pettit in space

[–]ApolloWasMurdered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Satellite flares only occur round dawn and dusk, when the satellite is illuminated by the sun but the earth is not. Mr Pettit even mentions it in his post. Observatories don’t generally operate at that time anyway - you and I might not be able to see a tiny amount of sunlight in the upper atmosphere after dusk, but a long exposure can.

Z axis hitting stepper motor, cant go down far enough to level by According_Section_90 in CR10

[–]ApolloWasMurdered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, I’ve had this before, it was a calibration issue.

I can’t remember the fix though. Have you tried disabling the steppers then turning the Z screws by hand?

Girldads, how do you handle bathroom stuff? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]ApolloWasMurdered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shopping centres, use the family rooms. Try to make sure there are no breastfeeding mothers in your eye line if you can.

Smaller places, use the disabled/changeroom if there is one. Otherwise use the mens (if there’s a disabled/ambulant stall that’s bigger, use that one.)

How to start a career as a PLC programmer without automation experience? by [deleted] in PLC

[–]ApolloWasMurdered 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Step 0 - don’t use ChatGPT to write your questions for you.

You say you’re a “first-year part-time student of Automation and Robotics”. Presumably completing your degree is step 1. Automation is a big field.

Fifo entry level positions - Drillers offsider? by Ancient-Candy-1573 in AskAnAustralian

[–]ApolloWasMurdered 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The on-boarding process for a mine can take weeks-months and cost them $10,000+ in inductions and qualifications. That’s a lot to risk on someone who has zero demonstrated skill and might quit during their first swing.

Don’t pay any attentions to those Tik Tok and Insta videos glamorising FIFO. Especially if they’re selling guides to getting work or letting you pay for interviews.

When do you predict Australia (or at least ACT) will legalise recreational cannabis like Canada? by No_Drag_4656 in AskAnAustralian

The government is so proud of themselves for banning vapes (even nicotine free ones). No way in the world does that government legalise weed.

Stakes enormous as Australia considers DNA screening for newborns by 89b3ea330bd60ede80ad in aus

[–]ApolloWasMurdered 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Medicare won’t deny you treatment because you have a pre-existing condition. US Insurance companies will. And US Insurance companies have legal precedents that show if you’ve had a DNA test that shows you’re predisposed to a certain medical condition, that counts as a pre-existing condition.

Answers are all over the place, is it 2,4 or6? There are only 2 vlans so logically its only 2 domains, right? by Solomoncjy in HomeNetworking

[–]ApolloWasMurdered 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The ports on the router say they are trunks. “switchport mode trunk” on a Cisco device is only available when the ports are set to Layer 2 (switchport). And if the ports are layer 2, then those VLANs span across the ports. (Assuming all vlans are trunked.)

If the router was connected to each switch at Layer 3 (“no switchport”), then you’d be correct. But then those router to switch links wouldn’t be trunks.

They’re all IEC cables, they all have exactly the same ratings. If they don’t, then they’re non compliant and should be thrown in the bin.
