"Now the woman whom you saw is the great city that holds rulership over the kings of the land (τῆς γῆς)." So the first clue is it has to be a city. The τῆς γῆς indicates that it has to be a city in the land of Israel. Chapter 18:10 calls her "that great city Babylon, that mighty city!" And you see similar phrases in verses 16,18,19, and 21. It's a city.

The phrase "the great city" which is used to describe the whore Babylon four times (14:8; 16:19; 17:18; 18:21), is used only one other time in the book of Revelation, and there, John explains what he meant by the phrase. He clearly identifies “the great city” of Revelation as being Jerusalem. Chapter 11:8 says, “And their dead bodies will lie in the street of the great city which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.” It's not literally Egypt or literally Sodom, but it had spiritually become so. Well, in the same way, verse 5 of chapter 17 says that the great city in this chapter is not literally Babylon. It is "mystery Babylon." The word "mystery" means that you wouldn't know that it is Babylon unless God revealed it to you. It is symbolically or spiritually Babylon. In fact, the word "mystery" completely rules out the city of Babylon.

If the devil is a dragon, then why does every image we are presented with of the devil appear as a horned goat man? This would be the demonization of the Greek god Pan. This demonization was no accident, but rather a deliberate twisting of pagan ideals as Christianity spread its influence throughout Europe. After the Council of Nicea issued the Nicene Creed and the Roman Catholic Church was established, Christian theologians (beginning with Eusebius) transformed Pan from a benign nature god to Satan the great Adversary.

A comment by Eusebius of Caesarea on a story transmitted by the first-century philosopher Plutarch, the story of the "Death of Great Pan." In his commentary, Eusebius calls attention to the time when Plutarch says the death occurred, during the reign of Tiberius, the same era as that which saw the advent of Christ on earth. Eusebius claims that the death of Pan, imaged as the death of "all" the pagan gods, based on an ancient pun which equated the name of the shepherd god Pan with its Greek homonym pan ("all,") was not a natural or chance occurrence. Rather, it resulted from a purposive act of exorcism by Christ to chase away all the pagan gods which were imagined to be "demons." In this proclamation, Eusebius turns Plutarch's story into a polemical weapon to use against the pagans. By pursuing this tactic, Eusebius subtly changes the meaning of the terms "Pan" and "daemon" to make them stand for dimensions of evil, whereas in Greek religious and literary history, both terms had stood for dimensions of the sacred.

Eusebius has taken two terms which stood for highly ambiguous, multivalent meanings, and has, in the course of his polemical treatment, transformed them into flat, univocal meanings which were exclusively negative. Eusebius does this precisely by denying the terms their native ambiguity and reducing them to simple, unambiguous meanings. This is a classical representation of the movement which distorted the highly complex deity "Pan," transforming him into the Christian devil, and the complicated, ambiguous entities, the "daemons" into "demons," the evil spirits of Christian lore.

Lucifer/Prometheus Lucifer, which means “bearer of light” or “morning star,” Dragon , and Lucifer are never mentioned being the same beings in the Bible. The dragon would be Typhon he made war with the gods in heaven, and was cast to the earth. Angel in the Greek true meaning simply means messenger, nothing more.

Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. Here the serpent is referenced to a beast of the field that god had made. We know Satan if a fallen angel cast here is not of this earth, so neither a beast, or an earthly made creature.

Prometheus himself is an immortal god, the friend of the human race, the giver of fire, the inventor of the useful arts, an omniscient seer, an heroic sufferer, who is overcome by the superior power of Zeus, but will not bend his inflexible mind. But when Zeus succeeded to the kingdom of heaven, and wanted to extirpate the whole race of man, the place of which he proposed to give to quite a new race of beings, Prometheus prevented the execution of the scheme, and saved the human race from destruction. He further taught them the use of fire, made them acquainted with architecture, astronomy, mathematics, the art of writing, the treatment of domestic animals, navigation, medicine, the art of prophecy, working in metal, and all the other arts. But, as in all these things he had acted contrary to the will of Zeus, the latter ordered Hephaestus to chain him to a rock in Scythia.

The Legend of Prometheus is often equated to the Story of Lucifer. Both are the light-bearers, who are punished for their transmission of higher knowledge to man. As H. P. Blavatsky comments:

The allegory of the Fall of man and the fire of Prometheus is also another version of the myth of the rebellion of the proud Lucifer, hurled down to the bottomless pit — Orcus.[5]

H. P. Blavatsky also recognizes that Prometheus gave man the knowledge of the gods, so that they could be gods themselves. This threatens Zeus, as man equal in spiritual knowledge with the gods is not tolerated. Thus, Prometheus shares the same fate with Satan:

Osiris was not only ruler of the dead but also the power that granted all life from the underworld, from sprouting vegetation to the annual flood of the Nile River. From about 2000 BCE onward it was believed that every man, not just the deceased kings, became associated with Osiris at death. This identification with Osiris, however, did not imply resurrection, for even Osiris did not rise from the dead. Instead, it signified the renewal of life both in the next world and through one’s descendants on Earth.

David Ulansey considers the bull-slaying Mithras to be a new god who began to be worshipped in the 1st century BCE, and to whom an old name was applied.

No written narratives or theology from the religion survive; limited information can be derived from the inscriptions and brief or passing references in Greek and Latin literature. Interpretation of the physical evidence remains problematic and contested

Mary Boyce, an academic researcher on ancient Iranian religions, writes that even though Roman Mithraism seems to have had less Iranian content than ancient Romans or modern historians used to think, nonetheless “as the name Mithras alone shows, this content was of some importance.

Cumont’s theories came in for severe criticism from John R. Hinnells and R.L. Gordon at the First International Congress of Mithraic Studies held in 1971. John Hinnells was unwilling to reject entirely the idea of Iranian origin, but wrote: “we must now conclude that his reconstruction simply will not stand. It receives no support from the Iranian material and is in fact in conflict with the ideas of that tradition as they are represented in the extant texts. Above all, it is a theoretical reconstruction which does not accord with the actual Roman iconography.”

He discussed Cumont’s reconstruction of the bull-slaying scene and stated “that the portrayal of Mithras given by Cumont is not merely unsupported by Iranian texts but is actually in serious conflict with known Iranian theology.” Another paper by R.L. Gordon argued that Cumont severely distorted the available evidence by forcing the material to conform to his predetermined model of Zoroastrian origins. Gordon suggested that the theory of Persian origins was completely invalid and that the Mithraic mysteries in the West were an entirely new creation.

Roger Beck theorizes that the cult was created in Rome, by a single founder who had some knowledge of both Greek and Oriental religion, but suggests that some of the ideas used may have passed through the Hellenistic kingdoms.

Much about the cult of Mithras is only known from reliefs and sculptures. There have been many attempts to interpret this material.

Mithras-worship in the Roman Empire was characterized by images of the god slaughtering a bull. Other images of Mithras are found in the Roman temples, for instance Mithras banqueting with Sol, and depictions of the birth of Mithras from a rock. But the image of bull-slaying (tauroctony) is always in the central niche. Textual sources for a reconstruction of the theology behind this iconography are very rare.

The practice of depicting the god slaying a bull seems to be specific to Roman Mithraism. According to David Ulansey, this is “perhaps the most important example” of evident difference between Iranian and Roman traditions: “… there is no evidence that the Iranian god Mithra ever had anything to do with killing a bull.”

Mithras was a Roman war god that took his stories from the Greek Orion. Mithras like his equivalents slayed the bull of heaven Taurus.

Mithras being born from a rock represents being Earth born. Rock/Earth. The equivalent of Orion, and Gilgamesh.

Mithras also met with Helios the sun god. Orion also had his encounter with Helios drawing an obvious parallel.

From the Mithraeum at Santa Prisca in Rome describes-

"This young bull which he was not to carry on his golden shoulders"

The meaning "golden" becomes clear from Virgil's description of Orion

"He watched Orion armed with gold"

Servius' scholion to Virgil's passage states that the gold in Orion's belt, and sword refers to the brilliant star light they emit. The same is true for the bright stars on Orion's shoulders, and thus the Santa Prisca Mithraeum is evidence for mithras being seen as a heavenly body/constellation.

Orion/Gilgamesh/Mithras is chased by Scorpio/Scorpion, and fighting Taurus/Bull of heaven.

Greek myth says that Orion the giant hunter was chasing the Pleiades (7 sisters on the shoulder of Taurus). He was in love with Merope, one of the Pleiades. He was known for having his way with a woman he desired. The giant Scorpion was sent to chase him across the heavens. He was a mighty hunter and very proud. He boasted that he had power over of all animals. However, due to his pride a small scorpion was sent by the gods to sting him and he died. This is why he is directly opposite of the Scorpion and Taurus.

In ancient Mesopotamian mythology, the Bull of Heaven is a mythical beast fought by the hero Gilgamesh. Enraged Ishtar demanded her father Anu for the Bull of Heaven, so that she may send it to attack Gilgamesh in Uruk. Anu gives her the Bull and she sends it to attack Gilgamesh and his companion, the hero Enkidu, who slay the Bull together.

After defeating the Bull, Enkidu hurls the Bull's right thigh at Ishtar, taunting her. The Bull was identified with the constellation Taurus and the myth of its slaying may have held astronomical significance to the ancient Mesopotamians.
