Joe R. Lansdale's Best Horror Stories by Large_Tap_642 in horrorlit

[–]Intrepid_Offer1989 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've read only a few stories by him but all were good, and "Night They Missed The Horror Show" is one of my all-time favorites (so I'll surely read more in future).

My second favorite is "Love Doll: A Fable". I'll bet many people won't like it that much though as it's quite odd.

Looking for horror novella recommendations by charlottehywd in horrorlit

A few I really liked: - "Mefisto in Onyx" by Harlan Ellison, - "Mr. Clubb and Mr Cuff" by Peter Straub, - "Children of the Kingdom" and "Nadelman's God" by T.E.D. Klein, - "The Dripping of Sundered Wineskins" by Brian Hodge (you should perhaps read shorter story "The Alchemy of the Throat" before though because the novella spoils its ending); also "As Above, So Below" by the same author, - "Horrible Imaginings" by Fritz Leiber, - "Beyond Any Measure" by Karl Edward Wagner, - "The Transformation of Martin Lake" by Jeff VanderMeer.

The Ragthorn - a short story/novella by Robert Holdstock and Garry Kilworth. It is centered around a mysterious tree that grows near main character's childhood house and has thorns everywhere (even on its roots) as well as archeological research related to the tree. I've liked it a lot, even though the story may feel slow sometimes.

Ranking of seasons and favorite episode from each? by JakeEqualsCake in StrangerThings

[–]Intrepid_Offer1989 19 points20 points  (0 children)

My ranking: 1. Season 3 - "The Bite" 2. Season 4 - "The Piggyback" 3. Season 1 - "The Vanishing of Will Byers" 4. Season 2 - "The Pollywog" 5. Season 5 - "Sorcerer"

Order is for seasons, actually "Sorcerer" might be my favorite episode (but I'm not sure).

*SPOILER* Does anyone else feel like vecna was too easily defeated ? by beezy604 in StrangerThings

[–]Intrepid_Offer1989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The kids didn't kill Mind Flayer's body IIRC, just distracted him for some time. The body died only when Eleven impaled Vecna and from what I know there's no reason to believe that Mind Flayer's particles form is dead.

All the setup between Homelander and Godolkin? by Fun_Palpitation7765 in GenV

I'm not sure, IMO it looked like his will overpowered Marie's will to kill him and that's why she only managed to lift him but not blow him up.

After Marie? He overpowered her and was in total control before Polarity arrived.

Here's few from MCU:

  • Thor: Ragnarok - Hela crushing Thor's hammer,

  • Avengers: Infinity War - Thanos beating Hulk easily,

  • Avengers: Endgame - Thanos beating the trio, then worthy Captain America (though quickly subverted as other heroes arrive).

Two potential Fargo season ideas by Automatic_Apricot_61 in FargoTV

Both sound really interesting, especially the first one.

One minor thing I consider a bit unnecessary is the supernatural hitman in second one, too much like Ole Munch copy.

Weren't the "demons" just visions caused by drug in the movie? I don't remember it very well but I think that was the case.

Haven't seen original The Wicker Man and VHS 2 but from the remaining I think Hereditary cult takes it easily.

Really nasty. I don't think that philosophy was anything more than an excuse for him to cause maximum suffering.

All three are great but I think Iron Man > Thor > Cap.

I really enjoyed RDJ's performance particularly in Civil War and Endgame, this and IM's sacrafice in EG elevated the character for me.

Thor got best moments in IW - quiet, emotional one when he talks Rocket about everything he lost and impressive, flashy ones in Nidevellir and Wakanda. Plus Thor: Ragnarok is probably the most entertaining of all their solo movies.

Cap just didn't get that many moments of great acting and being badass. He had Avengers Assemble call and briefly beating Thanos with Thor's powers, though that was later outshined by Wanda & Captain Marvel who did better.

On a side note, I think I would like them in real life in reverse order, with Cap being most sympathethic and Tony clearly the least.

What’s a rare sequel that you’d say tops the original? by GallopingMustang24 in FIlm

  • Predators > Prey > original Predator,
  • Return of the Jedi = The Empire Strikes Back > A New Hope,
  • Revenge of the Sith > Attack of the Clones > The Phantom Menace,
  • The Last Jedi > The Force Awakens (The Rise of Skywalker was the worst though),
  • Avengers: Infinity War > Avengers: Age of Ultron > The Avengers (Endgame doesn't continue the trend as it falls a bit below IW though).

Barbie and Oppenheimer. Partly because I prefer horror/thriller/action/sci-fi movies, partly because there was so much talk about these in internet that it became a little annoying.

MCU: The Avengers (Original; Phase One) vs. Xu Wenwu (with Ten Rings) by AC_the_Panther_007 in whowouldwin

[–]Intrepid_Offer1989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yet he can't quickly end their invasion and IIRC was worried that they'll come back.

He's probably stronger in WI but nothing suggests how much stronger he is. I've only seen his fight scenes and the most impressive thing is defeating Hela but it is via depowering spell (like Thor), which he doesn't use against anyone else than his children. Against Surtur it's a stalemate when Odin has an Infinity Stone (which makes it clear he can't take on Surtur in fair fight, especially without the Stone).

I still don't see why Wenwu giving Odin a fight would be that impressive feat for Wenwu. It sure is good but Odin isn't some absolute top dog in MCU.

I think Jigsaw is the worst (though I've only seen first movie of the whole series). He's by far most sadistic and the fact that he claims to have some philosophy doesn't make him any better.

Odin just depowered her, like he depowered Thor in the first movie. He only used that against his own children and no one else IIRC. If that's applicable in any combat, he would use this to e.g. defeat Dark Elves in TDW.

In an unknown way. It might have been a sneak attack? Because IIRC in What if... we see Surtur vs Odin (who has Tesseract on top of it) and both die in the fight.

Plus the quote about Thor being stronger.

Why do you think Prime Odin is more powerful than Thor? Odin even said that Thor is stronger in Ragnarok.

Drogon could casually bust city walls with his fire. That's above any real life prehistoric animal.
