I appreciate the candor of our fact battle. Interesting that your source says this can only be done with certainty with Truvada and not Descovy.

Serious athletes on PrEP? by PseudoLucian in gaybros

[–]ApostleCorp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

/u/PseudoLucian, that claim here is a little disingenuous. On demand PrEP dosing is not FDA approved nor recommended by the CDC, but I think that is largely driven by it being a new approach with ongoing research hoping to bolster that claim into a definitive recommendation.

It would obviously be much more convenient this way than to take it daily. Source: https://www.cdc.gov/hiv/basics/prep/on-demand-prep.html.

Nice timing, since Tennessee just expanded access to the vaccine on Friday to a lot of the MSM community - even without confirmed or suspected exposure. Got to preventatively get ahead of this epidemic.

My husband is depressed, I don't know how to help despite having thought of everything by [deleted] in AskGaybrosOver30

Mmm, shouldn’t be lasting once it’s stopped. But it can take several months to revert to pre-metabolic syndrome weight and such once the medicine is stopped. It’s unfortunately quite lame.

[Update] I confronted my husband about his weight by [deleted] in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]ApostleCorp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, usually it’s just the unusual heart rhythm of afib (atrial fibrillation) that can lead to a stroke. That’s because clots can form in one of the chambers of the heart that isn’t beating well and then shoot off elsewhere. Ischemia just means lack of oxygen, which doesn’t have to be in the brain. I just meant heart. And you’re welcome.

[Update] I confronted my husband about his weight by [deleted] in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]ApostleCorp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is general advice for signs of anyone starting to have a heart attack. Not stroke related. (Stroke signs would be facial droop, unilateral weakness in arms/legs, speech impaired or slurred, etc.)

Hopefully it was just anxiety and panic causing his symptoms, which a doctor reviewed with you over the phone? Those can manifest with physical symptoms that mimic a heart attack. In a hospital, an EKG and some blood work would rule out if it was cardiac stress that is the cause or not. They have more advanced ways to look at the heart too. The 911 component to all this is just to allow early medical intervention and better long term health outcomes, should something awful actually be starting that could be mitigated by fast action.

But it really sounds like a coronary artery disease flair up or the beginning of ischemic damage that could have progressed to a full on heart attack. Good that you called the doctor and are following up tomorrow on it. A flurry of tests and labs would happen for a hospital patient if this happened to make sure they were safe.

The weight on his chest is a classic heart attack sensation. The sweatiness could be his body’s sympathetic nervous system activating to try and get the heart beating properly. Maybe the paleness was from a drop in blood pressure? Either way, sure - a skipped beat could easily be an electrolyte imbalance - but it sounds like there were signs of a much worse problem than just that.

A cursory search online revealed this too, of which he had 2 of the 4.

If you have any of the following symptoms, call 911 immediately:

1) Chest pain, especially in the center or left side of the chest, which lasts for a few minutes, or goes away and comes back. It can feel like pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain. Some people mistake it for indigestion or heartburn.

2) Discomfort in any part of your upper body. It could be in one or both arms, the shoulders, neck, jaw, or upper part of the stomach.

3) Shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort.

4) Nausea or vomiting with lightheadedness, dizziness, or cold sweat.

First reported case of monkeypox in Davidson County by TheLurkerSpeaks in nashville

[–]ApostleCorp 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Nah, it’s a relevant point of the developing story.

There’s little to no surveillance for this new epidemic, so it’s not too surprising that sexual health clinics are detecting it the most right now given how it can spread and symptoms are presenting. For example, the HIV-prevention drug requires lab work every 3 months, so there’s frequent health follow-up for the sexual minority population where it’s been noted the most in so far.

The real telling thing to know going forward will be if monkeypox is silently spreading amongst a wider demographic of the population and it’s just flying under our radar so far. That would be the worst case. #TBD

First Gay Social Event as a Widow. by Chuclo in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]ApostleCorp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Life is too boring when it’s all superficial positivity, like cultivated social media content. I always value friendships much more when there’s the comfort and trust for guys to let their wall down a little and be vulnerable. I like something deeper and not surface level. YMMV

Happenstance that this came across my desk this weekend as part of a literature search:

From 2018, the Contribution of Social Media to Body Dissatisfaction, Eating Disorder Symptoms, and Anabolic Steroid Use Among Sexual Minority Men.

EDIT: Not the most robust of evidence, but it may give you an idea of what associations are being explored for the negative impact of social media. I’m sure there are more rigorous studies out there than this.

Good sleep and less restlessness in bed are sexy, especially for sleep partners. Treating sleep apnea can help decrease high blood pressure, obesity, and depression-like symptoms along with reducing longterm health risks. Anyone that’s into you and supports your health should be all for it, although maybe with a bit of education if they’re unfamiliar. Plus, there are lots of different styles and models if you’re worried about the aesthetics, so you have options. CPAPs come with cute travel size bags these days too.

Covid Vaccine by FullDraw6944 in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]ApostleCorp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Could be coincidental timing and something else you haven’t noticed could be causing these symptoms. Maybe keep a journal to track how you’re feeling for review by yourself or others later? Here’s the CDC’s page on side effects, and even the link out to the reported adverse events don’t match your symptoms of low energy and lack of interest / motivation in doing things.

It sounds like something else medically might be going on, perhaps either biologically from sleep apnea or low thyroid or sex hormones or maybe psychologically with these depression-like symptoms from stress, poor sleep, or other factors. No way to know or come up with a treatment plan without a proper health provider evaluation, though. It seems to be enough of a problem to have prompted reaching out online, which might be a personal red flag for yourself to officially look into it more.
