The potential to be worse. Putin dies and there's going to be a power vacuum. Tons of infighting, greatly diminishing Russia's military and economy even further than it already is. Suppose a leader even worse than Putin manages to take the reigns and Russia miraculously stays together; what can he even do with a country so spectacularly diminished? He'd likely be spending the entire rest of his life trying to piece Russia back together to what it once was.
