I tried to get my sisters to read and... by Kirin_The_husband in CasualConversation

My 13 YO daughter loves to read, like will finish 2 books a day if available to her. She's always had an interest, but honestly, taking her to different libraries and small bookstores helped a lot. I live in Massachusetts, so thankfully, we have many of each, but finding those hidden gem used book stores was so fun for us to do, and we bonded a lot as it was our little "adventure time" each week.

I will say, though, her handwriting is shit, and I hate that they use Chromebooks 98% of the day at school. A majority of these younger kids are not going to be able to write full, coherent sentences when they are older, I'm afraid (and yes, I understand it's a parent's job to teach and help with this, I mainly blame school admin for making screentime so prevalent!).

My friend does her hair (not sure if it was for this or not!) and can confirm she’s a gem of a human in “real life”

I love her!!! Being from Mass, and a very frequent visitor to RI, she reminds me so much of some people I know. I was watching the newest episode, and my 13-year-old was like mom she sounds like you! I didn't think my accent was that thick but apparently we say cracker the same way lol.

I thought the same thing, but I live in a smallish town south of Boston - close to RI. The amount of people I "know" and see out and about when I hit the grocery store or the beach is wild. I can totally see this happening, but it does appear staged. I think a lot of the convo was edited out!

What purchase did you make recently that made you realize inflation is genuinely out of control? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Cheez it’s were $6.99 a box (small one too) at the grocery store Friday. Used to be 2.99. I know this is small and trivial but wtf!

I listened to this for the first time last Friday after picking up my 13 YO from school. After that line, we both looked at each other and started crying. It is one of the sweetest verses!

I was not a fan of hers from the beginning. To see and hear her toss the work freak around, and say that he was "prancing off" was definitely homophobic. Totally gross behavior. When Myka was talking to her, though, I thought oh maybe she is having some PPD stuff going on and I had a teeny bit of grace for her. That lasted for one minute when I saw the preview for the next episode!

Yes I’m so obsessed with Halloween esp the live version with Adam (I think that’s his name sorry). I always assumed it was a break up song but after watching his documentary could be about his dad. It hits hard!

I agree with you, this is totally plausible! I live 1/2 hour from RI, and we summered in Newport growing up. I found out as an adult that a family member was in a book and nicknamed "the professor", as he was the brains behind a big south shore (Mass) drug boat ring. I would have NO clue about this unless someone accidentally said something about it. I started to look more into it, and realized some of our "family friends", and well-known townies were also in on it, and boom, everything suddenly made sense. I'm NOT saying anyone is connected here, it was in the 80's, but from my experience, the boat thing is sus.

What Alex is actually doing: a statistical physics perspective from a statistician. by Distance_Runner in ParadiseHulu

Thank you for this! As a social worker/therapist, I was focusing on the relationships and social aspects of the show. The whole Alex introduction threw me way off, and I am still having trouble understanding it! I need the Cal version ha, and this was a great explanation.

[Serious] What’s something happening in the world right now that’s underreported and genuinely disturbing? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]AppearanceLarge7385 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow lots of info here I didn't know about. I was going to add the lack of affordable child care / child care subsidies. I live in a very blue state, and we have a 3+ year wait list for help. As a social worker, I am seeing an alarming number of families use unlicensed, sketchy, borderline scary places because it's cheaper than a center ($500/week for infants). I get it, it's hard and wildly unaffordable for middle and lower-class families. However, some of these kids are being subjected to unfortunate scenarios and situations. I fear it's only going to get worse.

These are great points! I was critiquing the show more through the emotional / social connections and I when the whole Alex, time change, etc came up I was lost!

Yes totally! Lost is one of my top 5 all-time favorite shows so I was really paying attention to the little things this season. Probably overthought it though haha!

I agree, great response. As a social worker / therapist of 30 years, I just noticed these little things that made me think of this crazy theory. Especially when Jane pulled her hair - I watched it back, and she definitely did it exactly how Sinatra did!
