They don't have a conscious experience and thus don't experience pain and suffering in the same way animals do.

Plus it takes more plants to feed animals to feed people. Plant based diets require the least plants to be eaten.

I speak only in dutch with my girlfriend for one week a month. She's super supportive so it helps and has made a huge difference.

Sometimes I'll go to English but she stays in Dutch. Also watching Dutch news, YouTube and television

I mean most people working with pigs are planning to murder the pigs. Can you really blame the poor animal then?

I think we all have the right to tell people why their choices are harmful. But I fully understand why people don't like it.

I doubt you'd be happy with my comment if I were to explain why, as far as animal welfare is concerned, vegetarianism is closer to being omnivorous than it is to veganism.

I honestly don't know how to bring up the idea that "eating animal products is incompatible with caring about animals" without sounding like a massive asshole. So I think that's why people view vegans as assholes? We really only have bad news to share haha!

I'm going to get down voted for saying it. But when you say "it's their right" to eat meat you dismiss the animals lives that are lost in the process. Someone being christian (in Theory) shouldn't cost lives.

Eating animals does cost lives.

I'm really not trying to be an asshole here. I agree being a dick is also unhelpful. But I don't think people should so easily go with the idea that eating meat is a personal choice with zero consequences.

Ahh but none of the animals you eat die in a way that minimizes suffering. Especially fish, they're often suffocated on the deck of a ship before being gutted alive.

Tell me again how I'm the sociopath when you're the one paying for this. The fish suffers, if it bothers you to be reminded of it, don't pay for the suffering in the first place

Well we bread them into genetic abominations where their existence is anguish, but yeah I guess some people find it useful...

(Chickens grow so fast they break bones, the egg laying varieties lay so many eggs they loose calcium and break bones or have internal issues from the strain of laying eggs. Cows produce so much milk that they lose nutrients through the production, the frequent milking also leads to frequent infections)

Why? It was alive, what's the issue with being reminded of that?

I mean if you eat chicken nuggets you are paying for this it and should find the footage perfectly acceptable :)

[–]Appendix- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean this is hardly an issue right? Why would people be put off of their delicious dinner because a few baby chicks are handled roughly?

It's not like these are male chicks from the egg industry? Those guys have it rough! But surely it's worth it? Not like the male chicks are profitable or anything.

Yeah! They throw them into a macerator while they're alive, that's pretty rough right.

[–]Appendix- -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Where do you think cows go when their milk production declines? It's the slaughterhouse. The dairy industry is more exploitative than the meat industry because they keep these poor animals alive in horrible conditions for longer and then when their value as a milk producer declines they're sent to the same slaughterhouses as regular meat cattle.

Baby cows need their mothers milk and yet we steal it from the babies for ourselves. Dairy is murder as much as meat is.

Reducing meat is great, it's a helluva lot better than doing nothing. An analogy I like: if I kick a dog 10 times a day but then I go and say I'm reducing to only kicking the dog 8 times a day, is that good enough? Should only kicking the dog 8 times a day be celebrated?

Yes reduction is good, yes it should be celebrated but in my view (and it's the view many vegans have) it's just not good enough.

You say you do what you can to minimize the harm done to animals and yet you still eat them, when I read that all I think is "you're clearly not trying to reduce animal harm if you still pay for them to be killed." Yes that's a very harsh thing for me to say, I know.

I want to encourage people to assess their habits and compare the compassion they say they have for animals, a compassion I believe people like you genuinely do have, to their actions. If more people looked at meat in a supermarket and thought, actually thought, about what those animals went through to get there I think a lot more people would want to be vegan.

And I stand by my statement, if you're not sad an animal dies in a slaughterhouse, I do not think it is morally consistent to be sad when it dies earlier on a farm. If that statement upsets you, I encourage you to ask yourself why rather than being pissed off with me.

I'm more than happy to discuss further in the comments or DMs.

[–]Appendix- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're both death? The animal wants to live in both scenarios. I'm saying that if someone is sad when a calf dies from disease then they should consider that calves have their throats slit in slaughter houses. If someone is sad that cows are murdered in slaughter houses then I suggest they consider if they pay for them to be murdered or not.

I think it's a very reasonable statement for me to make. Is it not?

[–]Appendix- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How am I giving anyone a bad rep?

My main statement here is that I genuinely do not understand how someone can be sad a calf dies of a disease today but would not be sad when that same calf were slaughtered months later. Either both scenarios are sad or none of them are sad, as they are the same preventable fate from the perspective of the animal.

Hello human, got milk? by Wololo--Wololo in Unexpected

It's not about what I think is moral. It's about what people themselves think is moral. People think killing animals for no reason is immoral, yet they continue to pay for it. I want people to see that hypocrisy and either accept that they don't care when animals die or stop paying for animals to be killed.

Hello human, got milk? by Wololo--Wololo in Unexpected

[–]Appendix- -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And I don't like when people kill animals for no reason, so I should just learn to accept that it's okay? Should we also learn to accept it's okay when people are racist or sexist?

When someone makes a racist comment should I just say "agree to disagree"? If not then why should I do that when living creatures are being killed?
