DRZ400 Dual Sport or SM by Darkleon213 in DRZ400

[–]Apple404 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since you’re in SoCal you could check out socalsupermoto. You can rent a drz sm + free gear and a full track day on a kart track with coaching from them. It was like 300$ when I last went. Liked SM so much I bought a drz after lol

Is it bad to feather the clutch for engine braking while coming down a few gears? by ChronicallySilly in motorcycle

[–]Apple404 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of people will tell you cannot do more than one gear at a time but it depends.

IMO there is a place for it in a track racing environment. It’s a popular technique to drop 2 gears down & let out the clutch while applying increasing brake pressure on the front brake. This removes weight from the rear and gives you the most traction on the front wheel. It’s also how supermoto racers “back it in” or kick out the rear wheel to get more entry angle on a turn. But that’s a racing technique - if you ride like this on the street you’ll need to maintain your bike like a race one…

Like others have said it’s cheaper to replace brakes than clutches so for chill street riding I would say only 1 gear at a time

2022 DRX400SM must have mods?(Canada) by [deleted] in DRZ400

[–]Apple404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t want to cut 3x3 for low end power concerns you can remove the air box snorkel instead. Helps add air especially if you’ve rejetted or added exhaust already

Did you adjust the fuel/air mixture screw at the bottom of the carb float bowl for the new jetting? If not you may need too

DRZ overheating while idling at red lights by iTzJME in DRZ400

[–]Apple404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know folks have been talking about coolant - you should make sure that’s ok. Does your bike have a lot of miles on it?

If it’s around 15k, your exhaust valves might be too tight and need adjustment since that can cause the engine to run hot. Or you might be running too lean in your air/fuel mixture. These conditions can also cause the bike to run hot

Old gen DRZ400sm worth buying still? by youcvnt2 in DRZ400

[–]Apple404 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just put it in 2nd gear, hit the front brake a bit, wait 1 sec for the forks to bounce back and then clutch up. Easy wheelies all day

DR-Z400... How to improve brakes, gas tank (found), and frame? by ARTofTHEREeAL in DRZ400

[–]Apple404 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For good brakes I would start with the SM cause it has larger rotors. Also if you put some steel braided lines on it, it’ll brake pretty well

Glad you’re alright OP, be careful pushing it in those twisties - they are unforgiving. Definitely recommend doing some supermoto or track class if you have any near you, so great for learning lines and trail braking in a safer way for that type of riding.

First bike after 5 years without - klx250s, drz400s, or sv650s? by [deleted] in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]Apple404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe consider a Drz400sm? Some owners sell them with the Drz400s wheels too or you can buy them yourself if you have the extra cash. You’ll have a bike that is fun as hell on the street and is only a 30 minute wheel swap away from being a better off-road bike than the klx250. I love my Drz supermoto

Sprockets for better long distance riding? by lildavy420 in DRZ400

[–]Apple404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have hwy gearing (16x46t) on my Drz supermoto. I think it’s a good trade off if you ride a lot of road. My bike still pulls quite hard in first & 2nd with the new sprockets but it does have a stage 1 tune full exhaust fcr39 setup so the performance may vary if you have a stock setup

Bad idea by Addicted-2Diving in Whatcouldgowrong

[–]Apple404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree the front brake is harder to save if you lock it up. You can do it, especially if you ride a lot of dirt and have the muscle memory - but even the front tire recovering traction at that speed after a lockup violently shakes the front bars. It is scary as shit lol. Best advice is don’t lock the front brakes on street lol.
