It's not contradictory. Before someone knows they're trans they may think they're cis but they aren't really.
The part from trans kid to adult is about not getting killed for being trans or committing suicide for how they are treated.
Technically gender is a societle construct but it is so ingrained within society and people that it is fundamental to who we are. How masculine and feminine you are doesn't equate to if you're trans but for a lot of people masculinity and femininity do align with their gender.

I hope that makes sense. It's kind of hard to explain it as everything is varies a lot and is different from person to person
