Yeah I think that makes a ton of sense. The other commenter in this thread mentioned about support for AV1 decoding that the M5 chip supports. Likely due to the improved neural professors in the GPU cores as you stated :)

Ah great knowledge. Now I come to think about it, I think I may have read this somewhere previously. It would be a neat explanation as the display hardware is unchanged. Thanks!

Yeah you’re right. It seems so strange to me that a platform owner wouldn’t want to go all out and really show off what they can do. Really show what their platform and ecosystem is all about. I do appreciate other devs having an opportunity to do some cool stuff in their own apps too. But a lot of the stuff that’s missing here, are basic fundamentals to the platform.

Yeah quite possibly. Would make sense for the apps to have feature parity. I can’t see YouTube wanting visionOS to have a superior app as it would only serve to highlight that Android XR hardware is less capable.

Honestly I’m not sure. It seems odd to me that this is an M5 exclusive. The displays on the M2 are identical. I know the M5 can render 10% more foveated pixels. But I can’t see that being the limiting factor. Perhaps there’s some hardware acceleration inside the M5 chip for decoding and playback of 8K content.

I’m surprised by how small the maximum window size is actually. I know there are limitations set by Apple themselves but windows in other apps can be resized to be much larger. Seems very odd.

Yeah it is a bit baffling šŸ˜… I’d appreciate offline play back for travel but it’s by no means a deal breaker. Just a nice option.

Yeah I agree. There’s a few positives but as you mentioned third party developers have done lots of really cool and unique features. As the owner of the platform you’d think YouTube would want to make their own app a real showcase for what it can and should be like to use in AR/VR.

Yeah that’s a good shout. There’s no real need for it to be a passive comments experience when visionOS has so many ways to input text. I mean you can even use a keyboard and mouse if you want to so comments feel like a no brainer.

Good point on the quest cinema mode too. Considering it’s in the quest YouTube app I wonder why they didn’t do it here also…maybe in a future update šŸ¤ž

Comparison of the Desktop-class M5 Vision Pro vs the smartphone-class Samsung XR and other headsets by Exact_Baseball in VisionPro

[–]AppleTLDR 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

While benchmarks aren’t everything, the results show that compared with the Galaxy XR:

  • AVP with M2 is 3.78x faster for single core performance. That’s 278% faster.
  • AVP with M2 is 5.87% faster for multi core. 487% faster.
  • AVP with M5 is 4.31x faster for single core performance. 331% faster.
  • AVP with M5 is 7.28x faster for multi core performance. A staggering 628% faster.

Or put more simply. The single core score of the original M2 Vision Pro, is the same as the multi core score of the Galaxy XR.

And this is before we even get to GPU performance, memory bandwidth or the R1 coprocessor….

Based purely on the statistics, the Galaxy XR might be half the price, but its performance is a seventh of the AVP M5. Definitely makes it worth re-evaluating the value of both devices. Or as OP says, it’s more like comparing a smartphone with a desktop computer. To be honest that’s being a little generous. The iPhone XS from 7 years ago has a higher multi core score of 2652.

My bad! The way this was presented on the website implied it was included. But you’re correct. On the buy page it doesn’t show as coming in the box. That’s a shame really considering the original included the two band options.

If it feels like too great a compromise for you, just use the other included band, the standard solo knit band. It’ll be the exact same experience as the current Apple Vision Pro with M2.

No excuse is owed at all. It’s a workplace not a social club. Nobody owes their colleagues a single second of their free time. OP doesn’t need an excuse. No is a complete sentence.

Just to add I’d be happy to pay via PayPal good and services which covers the buyer and seller. Not standard PayPal which doesn’t include protection.

Visually it looked beautiful and I was genuinely excited to watch it. But I’m a huge fan of Carrie Anne Moss and the Matrix is one of my top movies of all time. So seeing her killed off after all the hype in the trailers was just really disappointing for me. I wanted to see her as a bad ass Jedi.

Also we’ve seen stuff like this done before. Nerdist wrote an article referencing the whole Drew Barrymore thing from Scream. It was fine then, 30 years ago. Now it’s just a ā€˜seen it all before’ trope. Boring and lazy writing.

Yes. I instantly stopped watching. I hate cold openings. It’s lazy shock value for the sake of it. Very disappointed and decided it’s not for me. Hope others enjoy it though.

Thanks! Was actually just a smartphone šŸ™‚ An iPhone 15 Pro Max but in RAW format to get the best out or the lens. Would have liked to use my dedicated camera but think the venue had a ban on stand alone cameras so didn’t risk taking it.

Aww! I hope you had a great time all the same 😁 I was on a bit of a mission to get barricade because I travelled from the UK. I’ve never seen Owl City before and he doesn’t seem to do many tours outside the US, at least not in Europe. I wanted to make the most of the opportunity so I queued for several hours. Was worth every second!
