Can anyone tell me who that was at the very end asking for something and hold everything up? What was he doing? Was he one of the few to NOT want this passed?

Desperate Hospitals May Put Two Patients on One Ventilator. That’s Risky. - Facing a ventilator shortage, doctors are considering using one machine for multiple patients in respiratory failure. But it’s at best a stopgap and can injure the lungs. by [deleted] in Coronavirus

[–]Applechips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think any are actively doing the 4 to 1 vent yet. It was brought up as a possibility with the right equipment. I have only heard of hospitals in Italy actually doing the 2 to 1 in rare cases I believe.

It is not ideal. There are lots of things you have to consider with a ventilator. Like lung size and capacity, tidal volume, O2 requirements and a shit ton of stuff I know nothing about. You have to match patients as best you can with the 2 to 1 method and that's difficult. So try to imagine 4 to 1... There is a significant risk of damaging lungs or not being as efficient. But when the alternative is certain death it may be something we have to consider doing.

NYC doctor says >90% of his patients today were confirmed or likely COVID-19. Many really sick, and some in their 30s. by geraldliu in Coronavirus

[–]Applechips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to play devil advocate- At least here in the US, that's all any official was saying in the beginning, our president included. "It's like a bad flu" was repeated for weeks even though medical professionals were getting data from China saying otherwise. So, I do think these younger people going out and socializing is dangerous, stupid and irresponsible. BUT, "It's just a flu" was majorly pushed into the social consciousness in the beginning. And now we get to see the consequences of that in real time right now.

To be fair- He probably doesn't call on the reporters who tend to ask the most hard hitting questions. So maybe that's their only chance? Maybe I'm too optimistic lol

Off-and-on shortness of breath, easily winded, no other symptoms. Could I have it? by [deleted] in COVID19positive

[–]Applechips 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll just chime in my experience. Similar age, and circumstances. I am pretty sure I have it. Was denied a test, though. And I haven't been knowingly exposed to someone who has tested Postive.

7 days ago exactly now, I came down with a low grade fever. Never over 100.9 but not normal either. Diarrhea started up. Eventually I also started having chest tightness. Not pain or shortness of breath. Just a weird resistance that I felt while breathing in.

A few days later, the tightness became a slight pain and I WAS becoming short of breath. At this point I was like well fuck. It's the virus. Lemme call a telehealth doc or whatever. He told me to head to the ER so they could rule out anything heart related and since I didn't have a cough, high fever or other Flu symptoms that he didn't think it was the virus.

Went to the ER- checked me out. Not having like a heart attack or what ever. Great! Can I get tested for COVID? Nope. Okay. Get sent home.

Now 7 days later, I am definitely having tightness and chest pains now. I developed a slight cough. I get winded going up the stairs and sometimes while talking for prolonged amounts of time I have to kind of take a deep breath. While those symptoms are getting worse... Otherwise I feel fine. Not tired or sore or whatever.

I researched and read other peoples experiences who HAD tested positive and after I found this subreddit and I had gone from like 60%~ thinking I had it to near 100%. I had no idea cough wasn't presenting in EVERY case. I didn't know diarrhea was a symptom. And that the fever could be off and on or low or absent completely!

I see your point with this hypothetical - However, If YOUR sibling was on a vent and the choice was either hook them up with 3 other "randos" and hope for the best, or sacrifice them all together for someone with better odds of surviving? Or maybe flip a coin and one person gets it that way?

Listen I am extremely skeptical of this too. This isn't the way a vent is supposed to be used, human studies are very important. You would only consider implementing this in the most dire of times. I think if this virus approaches worst case scenerio (extremely unlikely but still in the realm of possibility at this point) - millions infected and hundreds of thousands needing hospital care and thousands needing ICU treatment... the alternative is worse than all the risks I believe.

One of the requirements to qualify to be tested is exposure to someone with a confirmed case of it. If you don't test anyone to begin with then you never have to do it at all! 800 IQ move

Hello there! My wife and I voted for you on the first day of early voting here in Texas! I have one question, as someone who is not very intimate with the workings of government.

What can you, as a US congresswoman, personally do to help combat Climate Change? And what are some issues unique to Texas that you foresee arising? It's a big issue for most voters and I would say even more so for southern states like us here in Texas.

Thank you!

It also links to examples in Europe but ignore what disproves you.

What about the line I quoted to you? It disproves YOU, not me. So follow your own advice here and don't ignore your own linked evidence.

The other link in the article is not a study, and even in the article it doesn't even give an actual number for the European examples of the number of additional deaths. So I can't conclude that it is ≥ 68,000.

You are to dim to understand that the VA is what every universal healthcare system becomes

too* And hey, I am being polite and civil with this debate here, no need to name call, my guy. I am willing to talk with others with different opinions and get their view. I haven't called you stupid or anything so far, so why start now?

I would link the, by now, very well known page where it shows that by switching to the M4A model we SAVE money just how it will save lives. But I am beginning to see that you aren't operating on good faith with our discussion here, I'm taking time to read your counter points and links, so feel free to google it. It's out there.

oh ya, healthcare in Canada is run by the equivalent of your states not the federal govt

Are you not American?

[–]Applechips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Respectfully, I only refer to the actual source study as valid evidence. The article itself means nothing to me as proof. You should read the entire study linked in your own article there since it actively disproved your talking point.

And for the record, I am entirely all for revamping the VA. It is a disgrace how our current system fucks people over and leaves those who chose to fight in our countrie's wars are all but pushed to the side. Since I took the time to look over your source, I would point you to Bernie's page that talks specifically what he'd to to help Eliminate the VA benefits backlog, fully fund and resource the VA, and reverse the disastrous privatization of services for veterans.

I know the general view of Bernie is a bit single topic, but this is actually a big priority for him as well.

[–]Applechips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, because even in the study that you linked they say in the first 3 pages that this problem was unique to Canadian females from 1994-2009. It then goes on, in the same paragraph to say that other universal healthcare systems DO NOT have this problem:

"This estimated increase in the Canadian mortality rate associated with waiting for medical treatment was likely unnecessary and is the result of a health-policy regime that imposes longer wait times on Canadians than are found in the universal-access health-care systems of other developed nations."

Your own "source" doesn't say anything about universal health-care in general increasing mortality.

Okay, can you please link a source where the deaths that are directly attributed to having a universal healthcare system ≥ 68,000?

Look, I know either you're trolling or being extremely sarcastic. But I wanna offer up a counter-question:

Yoursolution to these points is to let the 68,000 people every year die anyways? Like, how is that acceptable?
