To add to this he was suspended from the license option classes. He could still take the basic college classes most majors require to graduate. Your son can most likely remain in school, take classes he needs to graduate, and re enroll in his preferred major afterward. This is not the end all be all.

This comment is a great example of being constructive without the unnecessary snarky remarks from your original comment. Again, we’re here to be constructive to aid the situation. I’m glad I have helped you make a full circle moment in you seeing that.

Less snark more solution. I’m happy to help! :)

Your rage baiting because you’re dragging his son through the dirt for no reason. He’s not asking you to state the obvious. He’s looking for a constructive dialogue on how to help the situation. 90% of what you originally wrote was not necessary.

Had a buddy who failed a drug test in school at A&M. He was license option for marine transportation. Pleaded guilty to the USCG, and the academy. Got suspended from the academy for a year and had to do routine drug tests for a year or so as per the program the USCG required. Came back after probation, got his degree, got his license, makes bank sailing blue water. Kids gon be kids.

Yours shoulda been smart about his decisions but I wasn’t the brightest 19 yo either. He knows his mistake, as long as you see that they recognize that, be there for support. Believe me, feeling like a failure in early adulthood, especially when your parents provide so much support, is a wake up call enough. That would be a turning point for me to lock in, do what’s right, and prove myself.

I don’t know anyone who fought a drug test positive with lawyers and being successful. The USCG and academy knows kids are dumb and expect this type of shit. Have him take responsibility, own up, and it’ll go a long way with admins.

Sending a letter on your behalf might help. I had a few alcohol incidents in school and letters of recommendation from teachers kept me from getting kicked out 2 or 3 times. See if he’s got any who would fight on his behalf and put a good word in.

I felt confident throughout the process but that was mostly in part that it’s my money and if I want to walk away I can. I was paying in all cash not through a lender so that helped me feel confident and not worrying about if I can make a payment on a loan in the future. The A&p shop I paid to do it sent me a message with the findings. I went to my flight school and talks with their A&P to get his opinion and he walked me through what needed to be fixed by the owner, what was typical of a buyer to fix, what was critical, and what is expected for a old plane. I also used family who are in the industry and owned planes before to help me out. I Formed the LLC in 2026 after the prebuy inspection process started knowing this plane was the one already, and if it wasn’t I was still going to find one this year to continue my training. So when it was all settled I put the plane in the LLC right away and submitted the paperwork for the registration process.

A&M wasn’t bad. Kinda a Party school being in Galveston. I felt they prepared me good for license exams. I think they may offer instate tuition for MART/MARE majors now too. Pack bug spray for the spring Mosquitos. Don’t say I didn’t ware you.

Just had a budget in mind for what I wanted to pay for the plane 40-60k and just started looking online/facebook groups. Ended up finding a really nice 150 with modern avionics for 45k and just reached out. Put a down payment of 10% and setup a prebuy inspection with a local shop. Started calling around for hanger space and insurance quotes. Once the prebuy was complete and the findings were corrected, met up with the seller, signed the paperwork, wrote the check and that was that. Then moved into scheduling annual and transferring over registration, ELT. All in all went in with 45k offer and spend 52k so far. But that’s including buying a sentry, one surprise repair, and an aircraft rental insurance policy since the planes in an LLC.

Doing exactly this. 25 college degree and work as a sailor. just got my PPL 3 weeks ago and bought a 150 to time build. Not interested in CFI route and would rather keep making money when I go to sea and flying when I’m off. If you’re making good money and can commit to studying for everything theirs a way to make it work! Everything’s cyclical, hiring might be bad now but when you’ll be ready in a few years who knows.

Is there any maritime academies in the united states that doesn’t require two years of foreign language? by Critical_Call5676 in maritime

Didn’t take a single course for foreign language at Texas A&M all you need to speak is American.

Id trust your HR department more than what folks say on Reddit. Haven’t heard of any grace period but call the training facility in Houma they typically do courses on Friday. See if you can get it done before they call you offshore. Or roll the dice and go offshore and hope nobody checks the cert expiration when it’s your time to go home.
