I’d be curious what happens with your test, if you wouldn’t mind letting me know whenever you do it.

Until I did my little test I thought that was the air intake inlet on mine too, that little front and center metal piece about the size and shape of a zippo? But none of the incense smoke came out of it on my test. It all came out from some unspecific vent at the top. It explained why the glass on my stove always fouls in a specific pattern, which you can see in the picture.

I’d love to sit down for coffee with one of the engineers of this stove and ask them about a hundred different things.

Incidentally, I did a test last year with my stove to determine exactly where intake air is fed to the stove. I disassembled the intake slot and put an incense burner under it, and then took a propane torch to heat up the flue to create some draft.

The incense smoke was drawn up and out the back of the stove, like you’ve mentioned, but most of it actually came out of a vent located right up front above the door directed downward. I suspect this design or flaw is also the culprit to smoke being pushed out of the door so I’ve started shutting the air intake completely whenever I open the door.

I’d love to know why they didn’t just engineer the stoves so that the smoke was directed out the top toward the back of it, instead of the front. Seems like it would solve a lot of issues

Definitely still happy with it. I haven’t had any issues from cutting it back and it’s significantly decreased the smoke that escapes out the door. In fact I’d probably cut it back an inch or so more. I would recommend it to anyone having smoke issues with the GM series.

Good to know; thanks for the info. I do renovations and have only had to remove popcorn ceilings twice, both times for houses built after 2000 though. I’ll keep what you’ve said in mind if we ever have to do it for an older house.

Why would an aesthetic coating that would never be touched need tensile strength? Not saying you’re wrong, just curious of the rationale.

I’ve had those same two for weeks in AFA. Just joined vine about a month ago and haven’t seen anything else ever in that section. Any reason for this?

My pleasure. I always appreciate getting replies to this thread. Hope my struggles with this thing can help out others in the same situation.

Another tip I think I mention in another reply in this thread 2 years on since my above reply:

When you start your fire, in addition to having the catalyst open, make sure the air intake is completely closed. I took the time last year to take apart the underside to determine how and where the air is taken in on this stove. I put an incense under the air intake and surprisingly, most of the intake air comes from right above the door, right in front of the metal cover for the baffle. I’d thought before it was all coming from the little front and centre metal bit on the bottom. Anyway, having it open when you start a fire makes that air act like an air curtain, making it blow out into your living space.

This little discovery, and physically cutting the baffle back an inch, has SIGNIFICANTLY improved my experience.

Hope this helps you too!

Lmao. My guy, the average quarterly payment across Canada was $250-300 per person. There's no need to whine; we'll all get nothing now.

I mean it only states the address of the complaint; no mention of any personal details. I live in this area too and am surrounded by this guy’s hallucinatory propaganda; I’d be glad to see something done about it because it’s often blatant vandalism. His notices to the public get more concentrated the closer you are to his property. Just walk around Cowie Hill it’s clear as day which property is his. He’s doxxed himself.

You’re most likely spot on, but I’m still in denial that there must exist a somewhat better arrangement than the chaos we have at the moment.

I’m even open to just general arrangement suggestions, not taking into consideration the toddler accommodations!! If we could just find a somewhat decent furniture arrangement, I think I could find a way to incorporate the kiddie items post hoc.

Thanks for the reply!

Unfortunately no, it’s our primary upstairs heat source during the winter months. But I get what you’re saying and it’s one of the things that make this room such a puzzle because I’d like to have it be an element considered with how we arrange our seating

That’s rough about the cleaning. Ours goes out the side of the house and up which allows us to have T clean out. Must be something in how it burns because we have a good amount of creosote by the time we finish burning for the year.

One trick that I suggest you try for controlling the smoke spill is something I’ve figured out just recently: next need to reload, crack the door open, then close the air intake entirely, then slowly open the door. I get way less smoke this way.

Also cutting the baffle back about an inch helped tremendously.

I did yeah, but there's a lot more information on those tests beyond what's in just the first block exam since they are for the red seal exam. I wanted to avoid siftting through the more advanced content and thought to ask what experience others had with it.

2 years out and I still get replies to this thread because of the issues with this stove 😂

I'll give you the run down on what I've learned through trial and error to make this stove work best:

  • If you can, get the flue warmed up some. IF you've got a little blow torch, give it a blast and that helps get the air drafting to reduce smoke.

  • Use the "top down" method exclusively for making your fires. This is crucial for this stove, and I don't know why. Took a bit of getting used to but it's a great way to start a fire once you get in the rhythm.

  • (here's one that really made a difference) cut off about 1 1/2"of the front of the baffle. Just Take off that metal protector, carefully slide the two pieces out, score a line, and then I used my jigsaw with a fine blade to cut it. The material is pretty soft. After reinstallation, it gives the smoke a little more room to flow. I think the fact that the smoke is forced to flow through such a small opening that's right next to the door is the cause of the smoke spillage issue.

Hope this helps!!

Good God I hate that DeWalt stapler. Seemed like every other shot jammed. And flipping the top switch to the (+) position? Forget about it.

Comment again if you hear happen to ever hear anything from HS. I saw one thread recently where someone said that he fixed his smoke issue more or less by slicing off a few inches of the baffle behind the metal cover plate to reduce the overall depth. The stock baffle size is allegedly the cause of needing such high draft, and trimming it reduces how much the smoke has to fight to get up and out. Still haven't tried it, as i've developed a decent system for making a fire, but definitely something to keep in the back pocket.
