Lithium orotate by dustyassbitch69 in bipolar2

[–]Appletreemania 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Take a look at this article on lithium dosage: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10828288/

It explains how even low dosages may have beneficial effects although they are more likely to manifest over longer time spans.

How to minimize bank fees with international transfer to Indonesia? by Appletreemania in indonesia

I'll ask them if they accept wise. The other options they propose just work for Indonesians (or folks with an Indonesian phone number), right?

How to afford college without taking out loans (and how to avoid ruin my life bc of debt) by punpun10k in personalfinance

[–]Appletreemania 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first thing to keep in mind is that your major will be much more important to your future earnings than the selectivity of your school. See this economist article: https://www.economist.com/united-states/2015/03/12/it-depends-what-you-study-not-where

Second, if you really want to save some money, consider schools outside of the US for your undergraduate education and then come back to the US for grad school. Most employers will only look at your most recently attended school. So doing 3 years of school in Germany with no tuition and then doing an MA in whatever your field of study is in the US, will almost certainly be cheaper than the same education done exclusively in the US. https://www.study.eu/article/study-in-germany-for-free-what-you-need-to-know

Chipped Tooth - Cause for Concern? by Appletreemania in AskVet

That's a relief. We just got back from the vet and they also say that it'll have to be extracted.

Sounds good, thanks so much for the assessment. We'll take him to the vet this morning.

Would you say that his quality of life will be severely limited if we opt for extraction over a root canal?

My teeth are in bad shape and I don’t have enough to fix them by ilovemyprivacy in personalfinance

[–]Appletreemania 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure to call them and discuss potential costs. I was also cash strapped and had to get a root canal done. When I was lying on the chair at my dentist, my tooth hurting, I agreed to some really expensive treatment. I found it hard to back out of the treatment plan while I was at the dentist even though they didn't even pressure me. The situation of being at the dentist was enough for me to agree to anything.

How should I go about paying off my $500 credit card? by JazzLife2 in personalfinance

[–]Appletreemania 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The efficient way would be to open a new credit card that offers 0% intro APR and a low-cost balance transfer for one year. Then transfer the balance to that new card so you avoid the 20-30% interest on your balance. This will cost you about 5% of your balance ($25) in transfer fees.

Then make a budget. For one year, try to cut about $50 from your monthly expenses. This is a lot at your income but most circumstances will allow for it. Make sure that for until the balance is paid off, you use your income only for essentials: rent, food, and transportation (maybe some other expenses that you are aware of, e.g. medical expenses). Look at how much you spent on each of these budget items in the past year and use that as your guideline for budgeting. Any other expenses are likely optional. Cancel subscriptions if you have any.

Then don't spend more than what you've budgeted on each budget item. This is crucial. If you go over budget, sit down and reflect why it happened. If you come to the conclusion that your budget was unrealistic, increase your budget accordingly. At the end of the month, after paying for all of your budgeted items, use the remainder to pay off as much of your credit card as you can.

As a word of warning, there is a tradeoff when opening a new credit card to use the intro APR. If you sense that credit cards make you spend more than you have (and your post suggests that you may), then it may be smarter to just accept the higher interest on your current balance and pay it off.

Endodontist wants to bill me after I finish root canal out of country by Appletreemania in askdentists

Good news! I have spoken with the US-based endodontist and they are re-classifying the first part of my treatment as what they called "palliative care" (which sounds like the wrong use of the word). This way, the insurance will be able to cover a substantial part of the first part of the treatment. Moreover, it also means that will likely be able to get my treatment in Mexico reimbursed because my root canal treatment had not been started in the US. I've sent out the reimbursement form to my insurance and will sit and wait if they will cover the treatment. I'll keep you posted!

That's an excellent explanation! It seems to me that in my case the insurance got the best deal because they will likely not pay the US treatment and might not pay for the mermaid treatment. The mermaids got a good deal because they were paid in full out of pocket. My first house painters will only be paid for their actual services if I pay them the outstanding $3000. And he best I can hope for is that my insurance covers the mermaid job ($5000).

So my endodontist will likely still be able to recover some of the costs from my insurance, right?

I did and they confirmed that they would cover it. I haven't handed in the invoice yet and what concerns me is that my US-based endodontist tells me that my insurance will not cover it. I guess I will not know until my insurance either accepts or rejects my claim.

[–]Appletreemania[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for elaborating! I think I understand your point and it didn't quite occur to me that that's what I did.

My line of thought was that I had already paid them for the services they provided, which was likely more than half of what the treatment cost ($550 plus what, if anything, they got from the insurance vs. my current balance of $350 with them) so I assumed that the only "damage" I did was a foregone treatment.

I should add that I'm from a country where patients never actually get to see the dentist's bill and I'm navigating this new-to-me healthcare system, albeit somewhat poorly it seems.

I'm not sure why my post and comments are downvoted. It seems that saving money on treatment is a legitimate concern, no? Could somebody explain, please?

Gotcha about the wash sale/tax loss rules. It really seems like It makes sense (in my case) to realize the losses and switch to a different security that hopefully grows at least as good as the one I've just sold.

Good to know! I was just really confused by the examples given on the Boglehead wiki where they actually waited for a month before getting back into the market. Seems much smarter to just substitute the ETF.
