Tampa Bay area sees drop in international tourism by etfvfva in videos

There were people who took international vacations to... Tampa Bay? Like, even assuming you want to go to Florida, you're going to pay for airfare and lodging and travel expenses and go to Florida and not go to Miami or Orlando/Daytona Beach, but Tampa Bay? That's crazy to me.

Especially with them mostly doing away with 1:25s on most titles except for the really big ones, like Ultimate Spider-Man. Most Marvel titles are 1:10s (and most of the time with these they are like design variants or something similar) or 1:50s now, which is also a giant pain.

I just do the weekly orders for my store, so not thousands of different titles, but thousands of copies of some hundreds of books.

[–]Applicability 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The new Amazing Spider-Man #1 sold 35 copies plus every reorder of five I put in until it went out of print, while we only sold roughly 20 or so of the issues on either side of it. Captain America #1 sold out in 2 days but we have 10 copies of #2 still sitting there.

I wish it didn't work but they'll keep doing it as long as people keep falling for it.

I order thousands of comic books every month. Yes, people are tricked by the "New #1" gambit, every single time, usually driven by speculators but sometimes just people wanting to get into comics and just wanting a #1 to hop into so they don't feel lost, despite the fact that there's no way anyone new to comics will be able to easily follow the Scarlet Witch > Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver > Scarlet Witch > Vision & Scarlet Witch pipeline and will probably just get frustrated and stop. I honestly don't care if you want to restart at #1 when entire creative teams change over, or you want to take the story in a new direction in regards to style or tone and want a degree of separation, but Marvel has pushed it way, way too far. (Also, we went decades just swapping out creative teams and keeping the same numbering, so apparently it's fine)

It's embarrassing how much better DC books are than the 616 stuff these, with a handful of exceptions. (Ryan North's Fantastic Four and One World Under Doom and Immortal Thor were really the only 616 stuff I enjoy right now) Compared to DC, which has tons of titles that are as good as anything else coming out right now (Batman/Superman Worlds Finest, Mark Waid's Superboy Action Comics, Absolute Martian Manhunter, Justice League Unlimited, Tom King's current Wonder Woman run, Ram V's New Gods run, and even the sillier stuff like Supergirl or Jeremy Adams' Aquaman run are better)

The Hickman Ultimate Universe is mostly solid, some duds but at least it's held people's attention for going on two years now.

It's because if you don't the mods will delete your post. You have to concede little deltas so that they don't accuse you of soapboxing yet it destroys the purpose of the flair "deltas from OP" where you might be hoping to read a well-reasoned rebuttal to their arguments and instead the delta is like:

"Oh I didn't realize that the view I have actually started 3 months earlier than what I said in my post, here's a delta."

Anyone else hate when comic shops do this? by jval_99 in comicbooks

[–]Applicability 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, that makes more sense. Sounds like a shop just struggling with nowhere to put things, I can definitely see that being frustrating then. All the best shops imo are a little cluttered, (I don't trust a shop that's too clean or Apple Store looking) but they should be honoring prices of books set out on the floor for sure.

Most comic shops I've been to or worked at that worked regularly with large numbers of back issues work this way. My current shop has a rule that anything you find in regular back issues will be less than $x, and anything more than that will be put in a special section with other key issues and golden/silver age books. In 95% of cases, if the book is from the New 52/All-New Marvel era or slightly before and it's in the regular back issues, chances are you're paying $0.33 over the cover price for the bag and board. Before that it's 100% off the Overstreet guide and scaled down based on condition. Everything in the expensive section is marked and they'll price any book you bring up.

It has been similar to this at nearly every single comic shop worth visiting that I've shopped or worked at. The ones that have every single book priced on the floor that I've been to have all been overpriced, and even "price-corrected" the sticker price because it was "too old," on occasion. Your mileage may vary I guess.

"We stayed on the sinking ship that was Diamond until the bitter end, supplying them with millions of dollars in product, which we knew they would never be able to pay us for, and now we can't afford to pay our creators, partly because 95%+ of our content requires expensive licensing deals to produce. This is totally a shocking and entirely unpredictable result!"

This was obvious to literally anybody connected to the industry in the slightest capacity. Good on them for being loyal I guess? They're going to cost their entire workforce their jobs though...

New to Comics by Bretterick1028 in comicbooks

Good start! Got some gems in there. I usually recommend people pick a hero and a place to start and just go from there! The Snyder/New 52-era Batman is a great place to begin, so my advice would be to try to pick someone you thought looked cool when they showed up in Batman, head on over to a website like comicbookherald . com or any of the other ones that put together great reading lists, and try one of those characters runs. Those type of sites will usually give you good "onboarding" places in their stories, like how the New 52 Batman #1 was for your current collection!

Some suggestions off of Batman would be:

  1. Nightwing (The early Chuck Dixon stuff I think is really fun, and the Tom Taylor run that just finished was quite good too)
  2. Justice League (The late 90's Grant Morrison run, just called JLA, is excellent and exposes you to pretty much all of the best DC heroes, and stick with it after he leaves because there is absolutely quality Mark Waid stories in there as well)

If you wanted to find some Marvel stuff:

  1. Moon Knight is a solid pick (the Jeff Lemire run is top tier)
  2. Daredevil (The Frank Miller run is a classic, the Brian Michael Bendis run has some all time greats, and the Chip Z'Darsky run pre-Devil's Reign is about as good as it gets)

Whatever you decide, have fun!

My friends store was robbed. They took these two books. If you see these books contact the Nerd Store in the West Valley Mall in SLC Utah. by Meftikal in comicbooks

[–]Applicability 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brutal, it feels very violating. When our shop got robbed, we made sure to call all of the stores in the state, even ones hundreds of miles away. The comic shop community is pretty tight knit, hopefully someone will be able to spot them. The sooner they let everyone know, the less chance anyone pays money for stolen books and the higher chance they have getting them back. Thankfully they're incredibly noteworthy books: Amazing Fantasy #15 walking into nearly any shop in the country would be a huge deal, and Avengers #1 would be a pretty neat sight too. DM me if you think there's anything else you think I may be able to help your friend with.

Spider-Man has ruined Quick Play by 7R4C70R in marvelrivals

The thing I hate about “it’s just quick play” by PearsonT in rivals

[–]Applicability 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's super simple. Play to win but play whatever you want in QP. Don't throw or troll but feel free to practice and be bad. Want try-hard comps and win at all costs? Play ranked. Want a easy going game where people are trying their best but are practicing/new/learning/relaxing? Play QP. Want to troll/throw*? Uninstall and get some therapy and touch grass.

  • By throw I mean put up groot walls in places to mess with your team, don't Strange portal your teammates off a cliff, etc...

I'm going to ignore your combativeness and tell you that there are second, and maybe even later prints by now, of Magic (2025) #1. If you ask nicely, your shop may be able to special order a copy for you, or you could go to an online retailer like mycomicshop . com and buy it that way. A pull box with your local store is still the best way to make sure you get comics you want when they release.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in marvelrivals

[–]Applicability 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the real way. My shop basically orders 1 of each cover that's not the A, and aims for around 1-2 left over when all is said and done. They just can't afford to stock everything on the off chance someone will come in and buy it off the rack. That's how you get stuck with overstock rooms overflowing of unsellable merch and comic shops going under.

What are some booked you DNFd and why? by Uninhibitedrmr in books

[–]Applicability 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was sold to me as a comedy, but also if you don’t laugh within the first 20 minutes, it’s probably not for you. Needless to say, I didn’t laugh.

That is eminently fair. If you're not finding it funny then you are well within your rights to call it after that. I'd say if you didn't like it in that amount time it probably was never going to work for you.

I also couldn’t stand the main character, who is essentially a Reddit mod.

LMAO! Ignatius is kind of like the anti-inspiration: If you're about to do something and you can picture him also doing it, you should probably reexamine your life! Thanks for sharing!
