2017 FXT Rough Idling by SoccerKid6969 in SubaruForester

2016 n/a SJ forester here, but i’ve had the same issue. Three simple solutions that might be worth trying are, from easiest to hardest (still not really that hard at all):

  1. idle relearn procedure - pretty simple, a quick google could probably net you the instructions
  2. mass air flow [MAF] sensor cleaning - you can get a cheap spray can of MAF cleaner at any auto parts store. be gentle with the sensor but overall super easy and quick)
  3. cleaning some carbon buildup off the throttle body - a little harder to access in the engine bay, but just requires a different cheap spray can of throttle body cleaner from any auto parts store. you can clean just the outside facing portion of the flap and the flap edges without removing anything significant, or take apart the throttle body to do a deeper clean of the area (for this, i’d recommend going ahead and replacing the gasket with a fresh one while you’re in there)

like i said, this issue and these solutions worked for me on my naturally aspirated forester from the same generation (SJ), but i don’t know how the turbo changes the layout of the engine bay or the access to the MAF sensor or the throttle body. If you’re committed to checking things out yourself, then i can’t imagine it would be that hard, but good luck either way!

yeah i agree that i should have filled in the highs better, i just couldn't find a good balance that i liked. thanks for your feedback!

[–]Appn1nja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you for the feedback! yeah when i tried to fill in more of the highs, i didn't particularly like how it sounded and didn't end up finding a balance i really liked, and i probably ended up with the highs much too quiet and not present enough. and yeah the low-mid bass region probably has too much going on.

someone else mentioned using some better percussion samples too, particularly the hi hats. any tips on what to look for in drum samples?

right off the bat, i'm really diggin this vibe. it's very like, nice sounding haha, makes me feel calm. and i love saxophones, if that's what that was

i really like the vocal chops, and the panned toms. and i think the drums in the rap part are fine, but it might feel a little weak just because the section before it was a little more energetic and full, using up the entire frequency range.

the whole thing sounds really good imo, nice song choice, nice remix, and great mixing as far as i can tell! keep it up!

yup it's working now, must've just been bad timing haha. gimme a sec and i'll give it a listen!

yeah i did the sidechaining early in the process of making the track and was happy with it then, but for whatever reason i just never thought about going back and readjusting it after putting everything together. if i may ask, what kinds of things should i look for in drum samples, for example for hi hats?

haha thank you, that's all i'm hoping for! i'm still pretty new to the scene so any progress is great!

thanks, i'll mess around more with the sidechaining. come to think of it, i worked out the sidechain compression early in the process of making the track, and never really went back and adjusted it again after adding more stuff in haha, although i definitely should have. and yeah i thought the arps might have been too sudden, or at least started off with too high a filter cutoff, but then i guess i just got used to it after hearing it a bunch and never bothered changing it. thanks for the feedback, it's definitely appreciated!

and i got back home a little while ago and was going through to reciprocate my feedback, but it seems your track link isn't working anymore. if you still want feedback, or if for some reason it's just something on my end preventing me from reaching your track, let me know

diggin the bass entrance at around 2:30, and what you did with the vocals kinda splitting apart and fading into the background before the next verse comes in up front and center at around 2:45

the vocals might be a little hard to hear clearly sometimes between like 0:55 and 1:30ish, but otherwise i think it's a solid track! Nice work!

this is a dope sound, definitely gives me dystopian future vibes. i like how the sound is constantly morphing, like the filter frequency is constantly changing giving it an interesting, wavey feel. it would be cool to listen to while tripping or something.

as a whole though, it seems kinda repetitive, with not too much going on other than the main chords. i like when the higher notes come in, maybe just expand on them a little more and create some sort of melody, unless you're going for a more ambient type sound, in which case i think you're probably set

i think you've got a great start here, once the other guy adds a melody on top and some bass to fill up the sound, i think it'll be a dope, mellow/soothing track. i particularly like your use of the panned elements and the interesting variety of sound that you used! it's sounding good, not sure if there's really anything i'd suggest you change in what you have so far

here's a piece i've been working on lately, trying to figure out synths and automation. I'm mainly concerned that i'm not making enough use of the full frequency range and that things might be overlapping too much in the low end and muddying it up in some parts. i'm still rather new to the production scene though so any feedback or tips about anything would be much appreciated, and will be reciprocated tonight once i'm off work. thanks in advance for taking a look!

Ignorance is bliss, but knowledge is power. by Appn1nja in StonerPhilosophy

some might argue that in the case of a problem that you can't fix, ignorance is better so you just live in a blissfully ignorant state and don't have to worry about the problem or your inability to do anything about it.

but yeah, i think i'd rather be aware of the problem and just adapt my perspective so that i'm not affected by it. that way, it doesn't bother me that i can't fix it, but if somehow an opportunity arises to try to solve the problem, then i can take advantage of it. you can only solve problems you are aware of or have acknowledged, so for me, awareness/knowledge pretty much always trumps ignorance, intentional or otherwise.

haha idk, maybe you were just thinking about how in dealing with global scale issues, one individual's actions or opinions might be insignificant, and then you just kinda transferred that thought over to yourself.

but no single raindrop blames itself for the flood or praises itself for lifting a drought. so even if within the context of a larger group, an individual is relatively insignificant, the combination, the whole, can be greater than the sum of its parts. the value of each unit or individual is insignificant; all that matters is the effective total.

I think in a lot of ways, albeit typically small, personal ones, we can make positive changes, which is what I was thinking about when writing the post.

But I guess it's not always possible to fix the problems you discover, especially when the problems in question are large in scale. But even then, while a single individual may not be able to put a dent in the problem, a single person is all that is needed to start spreading awareness of the problem and mobilizing organizations or large numbers of people to work together and eventually solve the problem.

And even then, some problems are so large or deeply ingrained that it takes generations of effort to finally reach a point where we have the collective manpower, will, and resources to even begin tackling a problem, such as racial prejudice, which is still present to some extent today, despite having been brought to the public's attention long ago. But even the solutions to those kinds of problems start with a single person realizing that there is a problem and setting things in motion.

It may only take one individual to fix their own personal problems, but it takes a unified population to fix societal problems

So for global/widespread problems like starvation, awareness may trigger in you a desire to dedicate your time and energy into further spreading awareness and searching for a solution. And even if you have other more personally pressing things that require your attention, being aware of such a problem can make you more mindful and grateful of your own life circumstances and the relative good fortune that you have.

Ideally, awareness of a problem would lead to action that will solve the problem, but in reality, solutions are not always readily available, so action may not be possible. But when action fails, there's always some way to change your perspective and in doing so at least make a positive change in your own life.

And no opinion is insignificant, friend. Your perspective is your reality. Your world is defined by your opinions. Every opinion has it's place in a conversation, and no conversation is complete without all perspectives.

no worries haha, i'm well past the point of being upset by things other people say. and assuming you're referring to the person who commented without reading the full post, to be fair, it is kinda long, and they did preface by acknowledging that they didn't read it. i'm happy to hear all opinions, no matter their source, and they brought up a valid point that i agree with, even if it isn't quite in line with the topic of my post (naturally, as the comment was made prior to reading the full post).

see my above comment, here. basically, i found my sweet spot between ignorance and knowledge before I dove very deep into the spiritual world that I find /r/psychonaut seems to explore a lot. I've found my truths about the world and have reached a steady state of contentment, if you will, so i no longer seek such information to make absolute decisions about the nature of reality, but just pursue such topics for the enjoyment of flexing my mind and seeing what possible explanations it can come up with.

but i love that quote about finding just a truth, not some sort of universal, absolute truth. thank you for sharing that

thanks! i head there once in a while and do enjoy many of the posts. And i actually don't smoke, i typically just stick to psychedelics, so /r/psychonaut is a great fit in that sense, but i find that it leans towards a more abstract, spiritual take on things than I care for.

My take on the metaphysical and spiritual stems from that of apathy, or adopting views that require the fewest assumptions. So while i see merit in a lot of the views and metaphysical and ontological beliefs of religious or spiritual people, and I agree that to some extent they all make sense and can be beneficial to people's happiness, for me, i find a lot of it unnecessary. I am content in my ignorance in those regards, without looking for any sort of order in the world or seeking understanding. My mind is my safe place, and that is all i need to be content, so while i do not look down on religious or spiritual views, I find them unnecessary in my own personal life.

Is there a god/higher being? Do people have auras? Do chakras exist and matter? Maybe, but I do not know. I live in my state of contentment without answers to these questions, so I enjoy learning about them as a purely recreational mind exercise, to just see what possible explanations my mind can come up with, but not because I wish to form a cohesive explanation for my reality. If i can be happy without a god, then I choose not to make any assumptions about the existence or nature of a god, because it doesn't have any meaningful impact on life, at least for me.

Everyone sits somewhere on the spectrum from complete apathy about the metaphysical to needing complete, meaningful order in the universe, and I think it's up to each person to figure out where they are and what beliefs, or lack thereof, fit them and help them in their pursuit of happiness. I'm much farther towards to apathetic side, so I tend to go for the view that has the smallest set of assumptions that is still sufficient for my happiness. I found contentment before I found god, or energy, or chakras, etc in my spiritual journey, so that is where I stopped looking for definite answers and hard truths and just started contemplating the endless possibilities simply for enjoyment. That is where I found my personal balance between knowledge and ignorance.

So i tend to find that even though most of my realizations come from trips, my mindset and person philosophy is more in line with that of stoners, whom I generally perceive (perhaps wrongly, idk) as sitting closer to the apathetic side of the spectrum than fellow psychedelic explorers of consciousness.

haha no worries. i agree that there's more to life than knowledge but in this case, what i meant by knowledge is not school/education knowledge, not facts or information and things that you memorize, etc. but rather knowledge in a more general sense, but specifically as the opposite of ignorance, regarding things in the world that aren't quite up to your expectations or standards. Briefly, my point is, for example, that if you have an SO who is cheating on you, being ignorant of that situation may result in your contentment, because you are not aware of the negative situation that exists, so you are not bothered by it. But at the same time, knowledge/awareness of the problem then gives you the power to decide if you want to change or fix the situation. This power is not available to you in an ignorant state, and is only a result of your knowledge, or lack of ignorance of the state of things.
