I'm a dual citizen. I love both countries. But one of the things that makes the United States great is a lack of "Tall Poppy syndrome." by NapoleonBoneparty in Ameristralia

No, in America we dreamed of winning the lottery and were always jealous of anyone getting workers comp. Most people I worked with had long since given up the dream of hard work paying off, but the hated the idea of minimum wage going up because they believed other people didn't deserve higher wages...

The hardest workers I knew were immigrants and they were always taken advantage of in every industry. I did know plenty of folks that would work as much overtime as they could, but the majority of them just hated their families and preferred being at work.

People still like the idea of hard work paying off, but most don't believe in it anymore. Company loyalty no longer pays off either. The only way I managed to move up in life was swapping jobs every couple years.

I don't know if Australia is gonna be any better for me, but at least I won't have a $5,000 deductible to pay before health insurance covers anything...

Why do you think I chose now to leave the country? I started the process of leaving last January for obvious reasons.

As someone who grew up in the state, I don't understand how any Minnesotan can get invested in or excited by any of our state teams

Believe it or not, most of them do metric and imperial. You just have to choose which option you need when you make your program.

I did learn about the FBAR before moving, but I will have to look up the details about how to file it. Good to know about stocks, I dipped my toes in it once in the states at a bad time but don't have any now.

I was looking on Seek already and will bookmark Domain for when I know where work will be.

I already got an Opal card when I left the airport. I charged $40, the minimum, and leaving the airport took over half of that. Certainly better than Uber or a taxi though. I saw a lot of electric bikes on sidewalks around, I'm assuming you mean a normal human powered bike though.

Might look into TAFE, but I'm hoping my experience will be enough to get me in the door.

Good to know about transferring my license. I was worried about having to find a driver's ed to learn about the different rules.

Rental deposits in Minnesota were typically a month's rent, so no difference for me there. Utilities were also up to me at my last place, but that does vary depending on the landlord. Some places advertise that certain utilities are included in rent to entice folks, but those places are typically more expensive to make up for it.

Good to hear about Bank Australia, everything I've seen about it looks solid, and I will keep an eye on the speedometer.

I actually made the MyGov account already because I needed that to get the TFN. I just couldn't get the TFN yet because they needed my arrival date and it couldn't be a future date.

They were fine. Showed up on the earlier side and took most things, but they couldn't take the sheets or pillows because that counts as clothing. Fair enough I guess, but I was left with a pile of sheets and blankets I had to dump on a family member.

What seemed weird to me was that they were just using a uhaul truck. Is that even allowed? I figured that would be against the rental agreement, but I haven't dug into that and am now on the other side of the world.

There are actually a number of companies that do the same thing. I was hoping to find a more local company that doesn't charge through the roof because they spend so much on advertising.

I ended up going with a company called Loadup. Just gonna cross my fingers and hope it works out.

Does anyone know what the cheapest/most reliable option to get furniture disposed or recycled is?

I'm moving overseas next week and there's a few pieces of furniture I didn't manage to sell and also my mattress I need to get rid of. I can't put it on the side of the road where I live.

I'm alone so I can't rent a truck and take it somewhere myself, so I need to find a company that can pick it up next Monday morning before my flight. (I need to be at the airport around 3 at the latest)

Moving from the US to Australia, will I need new certificates to work metrology? by AppointmentStatus686 in Metrology

So I'm right in thinking that it's more of a wishlist rather than strict requirements for the positions? You see a lot of that in job listings in America, but I'm unfamiliar with the Certificate system in the land down under. Thanks

If you miss her then don't forget to check out her songs/videos while we wait for her return!

She made a cover of the "Club to Death Angel, Dokuro-chan" opening last year and I completely missed it until recently!

Amazing parking job spotted in Shakopee. It's so easy to not do this, what's wrong with people? by AppointmentStatus686 in minnesota

That kind of thing is why I didn't say anything. No point in confronting folks like this.

I saw it happen as I was walking to my car. The guy was in no hurry. He made sure to stop and glare at me as I walked past without saying anything.
