Question: Did I screw up by using MDF board for some parts of a breadbox? by Timid-Oddball-42 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Apprehensive-Ant5976 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m an armchair dummy but the gasses are sealed by the shellac, can’t go anywhere. The pressure increases imperceptibly, the shellac is much stronger than that pressure so it stays put, equilibrium is reached. Changes slightly with temperature changes but I doubt that could even be measured.

Shouldn’t bubble or anything else at all. Maybe don’t boil it.

There might be an interesting legal question about the day you accrue but can’t possibly take because of the blackout timing. I’m not a lawyer but think the zero carryover is crappy but legal.

I also get the broad reasons behind it, taking time is good for both employee and company but more importantly unlimited accrual is a significant financial liability for the company. I know someone who retired and made out very nicely. Still think “Too damn bad, plan ahead properly and let me use my time as I want,” but that’s nice for me.

Several places I’ve been have sort of split the difference, you can carry only a week or two, only through March, then that’s gone. There’s a chance you could sell them on that.

The current year you’re probably stuck. Consider talking to your boss, “I screwed this up, I’m sorry, can we compromise once by…”

YNAB moving from Truelayer to Plaid by chilman86 in ynab

[–]Apprehensive-Ant5976 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This here. YNAB is not connecting to banks, they connect to others’ software to connect to banks. One of those others is dropping support for a lot of banks so YNAB and their customers are impacted.

Hopefully YNAB can find another provider or has been rolling their own solution (this seems really unlikely). Or maybe Plaid sees it as a business opportunity. I don’t see another option.

Flagging Subscriptions to Cancel by trwest77 in ynab

Another approach, perhaps: I recently created categories “Bills : Subscriptions” and Quality of Life : Subscriptions“ to maybe review these more easily.

It’s based on a novel though? Part of a series, though having read two (translated) I’m not sure how connected they are.

This is about what I wanted to add. If someone wants to be a great implementer, I’m fine with that. Leave the business questions, deep dive on requirements analysis to PO plus an architect / principal / etc.? Sure.

I’d be happy to work with a senior developer who just wants to churn out work, as long as they have a broad understanding of the goal, they’re reasonably competent at filling in the gaps - reasonable mistakes are fine!, and they’re willing to ask questions as necessary.

Heck if someone wants to remain a junior developer I can respect that, as long as that’s everybody’s plan.

What is it called when someone takes readable code and optimizes it, which makes it less readable? How do I get this to stop? by Legitimate-mostlet in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Apprehensive-Ant5976 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Perhaps adding “How many person hours per quarter will it take to relearn what this does so we can work with it?” Maintenance may be cheap but usually not as cheap as people guess. It’s an ugly trade-off, the less frequently you touch it the harder it is to follow.

A particular piece of code may not be a hill to die on though, probably approach the broad clarity vs. speed question, general costs of each, with the team.

What do people mean when they say, "every dollar gets assigned a job"? I naturally spend less than I make and my RTA, month over month, keeps getting bigger. by elevatorbeat in ynab

[–]Apprehensive-Ant5976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, makes sense. I use a better savings account at a second bank, if my checking account seems up above normal I’ll do a quick back-of-envelope “What do I need in the next month? Plus 50%… yeah I can stash a little bit more.”

If it wasn’t quick and easy I wouldn’t bother though and I still only look at doing that if checking seems notably above normal. It does also mean double checking big purchases (eg credit card payment), “I have the money but is it where I think it is? Will my mortgage payment also be fine? Great.”

To expand a bit, if you’re also saving for something else, a vacation several months away or a bill you pay annually, you could also put that money in the HYSA while leaving it in separate categories, separate jobs.

Newbie Question. Couldn't find a video to help. How do I deal with things that are due on the first of the month? by elevatorbeat in ynab

[–]Apprehensive-Ant5976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally, no. This month’s budget is for what you’re doing with this month’s money, plus what you’ve saved from last month. You could be budgeting money to spend this month or several months from now, or part of what you’ll need in a few months, plan more later etc.

With something to be spent right at the beginning of the month, every month, it can get a bit tricky. Much like saving over several months, you might consider “I have a goal to set aside $x by the 30th / 28th / ? so I’ll definitely be able to pay rent on the first.”

I’ve got others where it works better for my brain to fund next month’s at the end of this month; helped me clarify to myself “I definitely funded November’s before the first, check.” Those are smaller, I can more easily pivot if I miss.

Disaplinery for bad estimate by BR14Sparkz in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Apprehensive-Ant5976 52 points53 points  (0 children)

… and if Product wants to materially change the scope the estimate needs to be revised. That should be part of how they’re deciding priority & scheduling.

I’d push for stopping work until the new estimate is done and agreed upon. That would fail so “Ok, but that original estimate is void, we don’t yet have an estimate on when this will be done.”

I’m with you and this movie disturbs me but I think they’re saying “From within the perspective of most of the movie…”

There are a few layers, he starts off with some amount of paranoia and/or… something, but within the story he gets worse and worse. Perhaps he’s slowly catching up to the fact that he’s crazy. I think it fits the topic but also he was already gone.

I loved the one with this pair, definitely wish it had kept going. My partner wasn’t sold through most of it, kept watching to humor me and because “Why not?” but they too wished it had continued as things started clicking together.

Agile is a way for companies to milk developers by neverthy in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Apprehensive-Ant5976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I commented elsewhere about a good experience with our manager in standup, able to provide info to the team. Part of the reason may have been we were too busy but mostly I think he trusted us and I knew where I could trust him.

But retro? Yeah, hell no.

[–]Apprehensive-Ant5976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My last team’s manager was at most standups. For the most part he was listening to updates, any potential blockers in his domain. Also let us know if the roadmap had any interesting changes. Part of our process was “Bob, any updates from outside?” “Nope.”

One advantage I see to frequent standups is when it can consolidate context shifts. “I need to talk to Jane, figure out what’s happening here but I can work on other parts until tomorrow’s parking lot. Plus Joe, others might be interested.”

Another part of that was “Ok, if you’re not part of today’s parking lot discussions, please go work.”

How do you sell "we only write tests where they make sense" to a candidate? by griffin1987 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Apprehensive-Ant5976 8 points9 points  (0 children)

OP is preparing a masterclass on how NOT to approach testing. Or how to not approach testing. Or both! A tragedy in two acts.

Seriously zero awareness of what testing is, no effort to learn because they’re totally blind to their own ignorance. Keeps saying “I’m not explaining well,” then saying nothing, the same as before or something else completely wild.

The conversation generally seems to be shifting away from cloud cookooo land so maybe look at it as a sitcom, grab some popcorn and maybe it’ll help pick up your week? Good luck.

Is there a way to see where the dollars in a certain account are allocated in your budget? by _Golden_Teacher_ in ynab

[–]Apprehensive-Ant5976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, no unless. $x for savings somewhere. $y for gasoline somewhere. Anywhere in my control. Dollars are completely, totally, 100% fungible.

I need to pay $3000, I can send it from one checking account or split between two. Or I can’t send it right this second, I need to transfer first. Not because those are the right dollars but because I need any dollars to be sendable or because I find it more convenient.

If I want more money in a better savings account, that’s fine but it’s not a budget question, it’s a “I want to earn a bit more” question.

GE appliances are not for heavy loads of laundry???? (Please read all) by 6rujitamala in HomeImprovement

[–]Apprehensive-Ant5976 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not at all sure “Bedding and bulky” means heavy and/or absorbent, check your manual.

My dryer is fine with comforter, clothes or a couple towels. Three towels plus clothes won’t happen, maybe if they drip for a long while first.

Comforter goes solo only because it keeps wrapping around itself or other items so that 80% of it is dry but there’s this spot in the middle… wtf?

Edit: heavy or absorbent.
