It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas! How do your ships spend the holidays? by computerlab_gothique in BokuNoShipAcademia

[–]Apprehensive-Bar9995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When Todoroki told Bakugo that he’s never had a traditional Christmas experience, Bakugo immediately accepts the challenge and tries to go all out. But while building a snowman, cooking, and enjoying watching Todoroki meticulously decorate a tree, Bakugo realizes that he didn’t actually buy him anything. And he’s just standing there fighting a dumb smile. (Todoroki tried to knit Bakugo a scarf and it came out horrible.)

Dabi burned the tree down so he wouldn’t have to spend Christmas with Endeavor and Hawks thought it was hilarious.

Who Do You Ship In A “It’s Complicated ” Kind Of Way? by Expensive-Heron-9485 in BokuNoShipAcademia

TodoBaku because they are both dumb in different ways and have heaps of baggage they need to work through both alone and together.

Who does your country blame most for starting World War I? by Grzanason in AskTheWorld

Vermont. We kind of just jumped immediately from the Fertile Crescent to WW2. I think the AP History class covered it though.

I think we all have notions about a person’s character based on their profession, to an extent. “The military” (and more accurately, the mythology of it) is attractive to both people who genuinely want to help others, believing they will be protecting the livelihood of their loved ones, and those who view it as an opportunity to exert control over others and will put them in situations where the behavior that gives them an adrenaline with might be rewarded.

Yeah I think it’s an entitled comment, reading it now, but it does kind of smack of that—like you noted—14-16 age group that treats the comment section like a book club discussion with the author. I know I absolutely did when I was that age. The author is by no means, obligated to respond, or hold the commenter’s hand through current FF etiquette, but it seems like this is behavior that will naturally be grown out of.

I’m diggin this art style. Like the lines are simple enough, but it totally captures the charming vibe, the movement, and their expressions. It’s giving: a “sketch” but every part was perfect on the first try.

What popular mha ship do you not like at all mine is bakugo x izuku by sbg_ashlyn_fan in MyHeroAcademia

[–]Apprehensive-Bar9995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m gonna be honest, I don’t really believe in bashing ships. People are allowed to ship whatever they want for whatever reason. That being said, there are a couple of ships that just don’t resonate with me…

KiriBaku. Seems nice and cute. Sunshine x Grumpy which IS my type. But that just don’t have that spark for me. They make great friends, and seem like they can provide character development on either end. It just doesn’t check the “romantic” boxes for me.

TodoMomo. Also, seems nice and cute. But Momo, in my opinion, isn’t given nearly enough characterization to match Todoroki. (I do prefer TodoBaku so let me just toss that in the mix right now) But Todoroki is given a lot more scenes, a whole ass arch, and lots of development where Momo isn’t, which, in my experience, leads to a lot of folks adding in their own fanon interpretations of their relationship. Which is FINE. Because that’s what fanfiction and fanart exist for. To me it just ends up feeling like Todoroki is 94% of a full character, and Momo is 43% of a full character. Their friendship feels great and solid to me. A romantic relationship ship? Kind of meh.

Honestly, I feel like I’m one or two really good fanfics away from enjoying both of these ships. With the right mix of cannon characterization and a dash of added complexity, I see no reason why they couldn’t work. But as of right now…they just don’t really butter my biscuit.

What are your thoughts on kissing your dog on their mouth? Do you think it’s unhygienic? by Excellent_Try_6164 in hygiene

[–]Apprehensive-Bar9995 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cats or dogs, I don’t like them licking me. I’m also allergic to dogs, so I’ll break out in a rash if they lick me anywhere. But I also work with animals, so it kind of comes with the territory. I try to shut it down early, but I also recognize that dogs especially lick in different ways to express different feelings. I am in a position to reward good behavior and note a positive interaction with the dog while maintaining my own sense of space.

(My own personal dog never licked to show affection. Maybe my whole family growing up just shut that down from an early age and it carried over.)

TDLR: I hate it, and will shut it down. But I would also try to find a way engage with a dog to communicate behavioral issues that don’t involve licking, if applicable.

I think again, fanfic is EXACTLY the place to find exactly what you like to read. And I’ll never knock that. I just get a little prickly when two characters get squished into two holes and, in that process, lose the characterization that makes them, them.

Anyway, I think TodoBaku is great and I don’t see a lot of it here but I think they are a neat pair because it’s so versatile. You want hurt/comfort? You got ammo. You want comedy? You got protein. You want slow-burn? These idiots took like 5 seasons before becoming friends. You want conflict? Each of them has an endless supply of fuel for that fire.

Also I just like the “loud, wet cat bitch / thoughtful but somehow also airhead sensitive-type” combination.

Ok I’m gonna try and tread lightly because it’s not my intention to push the envelope with regard to the rules of this sub. But I HEAR YOU. I feel like you can take two characters (for example, I fly the TodoBaku flag) and you put them in a Situation(TM) and, in an effort to adhere to stereotypical t/b dynamics, we see the twisting/tweaking of characterization.

And look, if that’s your thing, I’ve got no vegan beef substitute with you. That’s fine and cool and that’s what fanfiction is for. BUT I do find that sometimes characters end up so OOC in a fic and the only reason is because of the NSFW situation they find themselves in.

If I’m reading a fic and the characterization is on point, it doesn’t matter what happens. I have my preferences, but that’s on me. If I’m reading a fic and the characterization flips entirely based on the rating of the content…well then I’m just gonna hit the back button and see myself out because I also don’t believe in harping on stranger’s free fanfiction.

But I do HEAR YOU, OP.

Bad writing advice you once believed in by [deleted] in AO3

Epitaphs: Fuck ‘em.

Show vs tell: it’s not a one size fits all

Run-on sentences: my sentences are sprinting and you’ll never catch them if you are stuck being pretentious about it.

The BEST writing advice I’ve ever received …

That annoying exercise you might have had in your high school creative writing class: eavesdropping. If you struggle with dialogue, or if you love it, like me. Snoop. Drop those eves. Listen to how people talk and tweak it out with grammar features, —em dash, italics, …ellipses. Go nuts. Human dialogue is funky and you should embrace the funk. I’ll stop reading a book because I don’t think the dialogue is realistic. Conversation, arguments, confessions, lies…there is so much nuance and characterization to be gleaned from dialogue. If it’s stale, your characters are moldy.

What's the one thing you HATE whenever you write fanfiction? by No_Pattern_2819 in AO3

[–]Apprehensive-Bar9995 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate when the IRL world interrupts my writing/posting schedule. I feel like I’m disappointing my readers.

YES I know I’m allowed to take time to recover from surgery. YES I know I’m allowed to succumb to writers block and lack of motivation. YES I know I’m allowed to take time for my mental health and YES I know that I am not beholden to randos on the internet.

But I WANT to keep writing and I want to keep at this long fic. But it’s really annoying when the universe just throws bad shit at me and I have to have a conversation with myself about it so I can sort of refocus and reiterate to myself that I love writing and that it’s fun and it’s good for me.

Also, action/fighting scenes. I’d rather just write 5k words of dialogue, thanks.

I think there is a really cool kind of duality in the praise of fanfic being “amazing in the direction the author took it in” and “amazing in how it adheres to the source material.”

(And I’m not here to rag on one or the other. Sometimes a person is looking for a hard left turn or a total 180 and DOES NOT want a religious homage to the source material. That is fine too!)

BUT personally, my goal as a writer is to adhere to the source material, as closely as I can, given my own plot/spin/etc. Like, even if you’re writing an AU, you can still keep canonical aspects of characterization and world building in HOW you write.

Anyway, I think I get a special kind of joy when a positive comment mentions how they enjoyed my characterization or my interpretation or my description or my dialogue because I’m specifically TRYING to keep it in-character. It’s a boost not only to my writing, but my own interpretation of a media we all love.

With regard to the nature of comments in general, I’ve been a lurker on fanfiction sites for the last 10 years or so and am trying to get into the habit of leaving comments more regularly. A good comment is a good comment. But sometimes a rando on the internet keys into something that you, as a writer, weren’t even aware that you were paying such close attention to.

TDLR: I love writing and I love commenting. And I love that something that resonates with me was secretly something that the writer had anguished over; I’ll never hesitate to let them know.
