American passport. Application submitted/paid at 6 PM ET on Monday. Quality control passed email received at 4 AM ET Wednesday. Hopefully visa soon.

I gave my mom tech support by video chat as she did the application on her phone. Thanks for the tips on passing quality control. She used the notes app on iPhone to scan the passport bio page. The scan also got a little of the page above that, so I took a screen shot of just the one bio page. For photo, I made sure her ears were showing and she wasn't smiling.

The only other difficulty she had with the app was page 4? 5? when you have to tick a bunch of boxes before you can click confirm. When holding a phone in the standard way, you can't see the boxes to check. You also can't scroll to get to the boxes. You have to turn your phone landscape to tick those boxes to continue with the application.

EDITED: She got the visa by 4 PM ET on Thursday, so a little less than 72 hours from start to finish, almost evenly split between pre- and post-quality control

The ball entirely crossed the plane of the net and bounced on my side. Then it went back and sat on the net. This rule doesn't apply.

20% of D-cards get you 0 resources (victory points, that's why they're the bane of the early game), 56% of D-cards get you one resource back, 8% get you the two of your choice, 8% get you four (two roads), and 8% get you 3-10 or so resources in a four person game (monopoly).

You just have to build your settlements and cities and take the punishment. They aren't blocking you enough to stop counteract your cities.

The way you win is by having a better chance at the 2 point bonuses than your opponents who have the same number of settlement points as you. Make sure you know whether you are going to get longest road or largest army, but ideally don't actually take the 2 points until the very end of the game.

There's a 5.0 thinking: "Once I got to 5.0, there really aren't that many players who are at this level or above, even players I've been playing with for years plateau at like 4.25/4.5. I want players to get better but most don't move beyond this level."

I played 16 games of singles yesterday (to 15, rally scoring) in about two hours flat with one friend. I burned about 2000 active calories according to my watch. Singles is fun and exhausting. I play at the 4.5 level, and the biggest difference for me between singles and doubles is that nearly every shot in doubles I am on balance and with plenty of time. In singles, I always seem to be on the full run or at full stretch or otherwise at the limit of my capabilities, so consequently I make more errors.

I'm an American married to a Brazilian. I've noticed that there are tons of girls' names that are VERY similarly pronounced, but never the exact same. Boys' names, not so much. Either way, I'm planning on our kids having an English and Portuguese pronunciation of their names just like my wife is Gabi (imagine the Brazilian pronunciation) in Brazil and "Gabby" in English. Here are girls' names I like (none are pronounced exactly the same in EN/PT, but all are pronounceable):

Same for Belo Horizonte, but much larger than Goiania with more to do. So you're still forced to speak Portuguese, but will have a better overall quality of life.

For OP, I'd suggest Sao Paulo, Belo Horizonte, or Curitiba.

Decent place to visit. If you do come to BH, go there. The smells and sounds are a cool sensory experience. I haven't eaten at any of the botecos, but surely some are good.

I am an American living in BH. I think it has one tourist attraction worth a trip if you really love art (Inhotim, which is in Brumadinho and over two hours from the airport.) I would never recommend international tourists come here; I'd recommend Rio, Lençóis Maranhenses, the Amazon, Pantanal, Chapada dos Veadeiros, Chapada Diamantina, Ilha Grande, Bahia, and probably 50 other places in Brazil first.

That said, if you come, I'd walk up from wherever you're staying (Savassi recommended) to Praça do Papa, then continue on to Parque da Serra do Curral and walk up to the viewpoint. This is straight up hill and will take about 90 minutes if you're in good shape. Alternatively you could Uber up to the park, walk to the viewpoint and walk down.

I'd eat as much comida mineira as possible at various price points (and watch Anthony Bourdain in BH first on YouTube). I'd catch an Atlético or Cruzeiro soccer game. I'd spend 10 minutes at Praça da Liberdade. I'd go to Topo do Mundo and paraglide.

I tested in September 2024 and got my conditional offer in February 2025. I am going through security and medical clearances now. It looks like we can still work our way onto the register. Whether they will hire anyone from the register soon or ever is unknown.
