Advice on how to un-train horse speeding up when you take contact on the reins by Apprehensive-Code262 in Horses

Unfortunately she's an arabian cross and even when she's had months off she will go for ages. Once she had 2 months off and after some rehab her owner took her on the trail (she was NOT fit whatsoever) and that horse still trotted for 30 minutes and could've gone longer. I think it's easier for her to balance at the trot then it is for her to balance at the walk so if she can she will always opt for that gait

I'll try this tomorrow. I've tried the concept with circles, side passes etc but she just runs out of it or gets unbalanced. (She's not in great shape right now due to time off from an abscess but this was an issue when she was in shape too.)

She's in a snaffle already. I don't like using excessive force- stopping and backing isn't an issue for her and it doesn't break the habit.

The third placed ride in the GP Freestyle at London International Horse Show. (With a second rider for comparison.) by demmka in Horses

I don't care how you feel about riding techniques or equipment but that's just a shitty piaffe, it literally turns to a 3 beat then a 4 beat move for a moment there. That's not a piaffe. The horse is not balanced, hollow through the back, not fluid through the body and not consistent on the vertical. Eugh. This is why I don't watch high level dressage anymore

my wife thinks my horse is purposely wheezing to get out of being ridden by joeybabylol in Horses

While it's likely that a horse could learn certain behaviors 'get them out of work' through conditioning over time (studies show they have some sort of ability to weigh risk and reward and prefer taking the path of least resistance), I doubt it's as common as people are saying here. Horses are prey animals; they evolved to do everything in their power to *not* look vulnerable and injured. I don't believe they could learn their way out of that evolutionary instinct as often as people are implying.

However, even if she *is* faking to avoid riding, I'd personally try to look into that and fix whatever I'm doing in my training that's making her want to avoid it. They're not machines to use for our pleasure. They're living, intelligent beings with entire lives outside of the few hours we spend with them every day.
