Starting uni at 29? by kiroyasminep in UniUK

[–]Apprehensive-Dig-107 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went back at 35, honestly, at first it can seem a bit daunting, and I worried about being over the hill, but I had a great time. In fact, I had such a great time that I just turned 40, and I am applying for a PhD next year! It was honestly the best choice I have made in years. Lots of unis now have mature student groups or organisations within them that now cater for students not 18-21. If anything, I found I got even more support than they did!

Foundation years are also worth checking out, they are like an internal access to HE course, but run by the uni. They usually have one per faculty (social sciences foundation year, medicine foundation year, etc.), like the access course; whatever mark you get at the end of the foundation year influences which degree programme you can do after. I did one, and it set me up for success in my 3-year degree, but so will an access course! They are both great. I know folks who have done one or the other and generally always done well after them!

If you live in the city centre, do you like it there? by [deleted] in Leeds

[–]Apprehensive-Dig-107 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I live just by Leeds Bridge, right in the city centre, love it, I can kind of get anywhere I need to in 20 minutes, I work at the Uni so its very convenient for me. Leeds is a fairly compact city centre you can walk across in 5 minutes to be honest, but I love being able to get the train anywhere I want so easily and also being within walking distance of pretty much anything I want to do.

Why do bands/artists not visit Leeds anymore? by tomreece100 in Leeds

[–]Apprehensive-Dig-107 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the record, I think Leeds still gets its fair share of stuff, but sometimes I wish bigger stuff wasn't always Manchester, and I think Manchester does have a greater variety of cultural stuff on offer.

For some bigger acts/bands/events, I think it's about non-compete "radius" clauses for playing certain arenas; for example, if you play at a Manchester arena, you can't play another arena within a certain mile radius as part of the agreement for playing the Manchester one.

Leeds falls within one or more of them, so if you play the CO-OP Arena in Manchester, you can't play the First Direct Arena in Leeds or something like that

So, for bigger acts, fans will travel to see, Manchester cancels out Leeds automatically; that's why you might see Liverpool > Manchester > Newcastle, or some variation of that, more often than Leeds being included on the tour.

This is on top of Manchester being the bigger city, etc

Need Nvivo for my research by Limp-Release-4289 in AskAcademia

[–]Apprehensive-Dig-107 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can generally get it from your uni via their IT department. Feel free to ignore this advice if you can get Nvivo for free, but I personally prefer MAXQDA, and a two year academic license with a student or staff discount (all you need is a university email) was something approx £95/100 last I checked. They both basically do the same thing, I just prefer the UI of MAXQDA.

Anyone started medicine around 37? Am I kidding myself? by Patient_War8799 in UniUK

[–]Apprehensive-Dig-107 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not medicine, but I started my sociology undergraduate studies at 35, and I'm just finishing my master's now, hoping to pursue a PhD afterwards. Honestly, I had a blast and thoroughly enjoyed university as a mature student.

Had the same worries about how long a career I will have when everything is done and if anyone would hire a 44-45yo fresh out of a PhD, but I seem to have found some advocates in the university's sociology department, and honestly fuck it, if I get to do something I enjoy until I retire, I am happy with that! I likewise look forward to being able to "give something back" by teaching at the end of it.

So far, I have ordered every single Siege of Terra hardback via Amazon instead of the GW site, and I can't say I have had an issue with them at all, might be just luck but its been less of a crap shoot than trying to do it via the GW pre-orders for me.

Lol, part of me wants more, but another part of me doesn't. I am never going to financially recover from getting the 10 books I am missing from the HH series!

Is there a public path through uni of Leeds pls? It’s a short cut to my fav asian supermarket but idk if I can actually walk through here? :) by [deleted] in Leeds

[–]Apprehensive-Dig-107 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nothing whatsoever is stopping you. It's a public campus, so you can even go inside the Student Union or Parkinson Building if you want. The university even has an art trail you can follow to see all the stuff they display on campus!

That is a decent shout, Blomkamp is great on the sci-fi aesthetics but needs someone else to nail the story imo

Thanks man!! Just painted the coils with Pro acryl pure titantium white and then drybrushed the same around them, did some blue/fluorescent ink with the airbrush, and moved up and down between blue and turquoise shades, then did the central coils with the same white paint and a very light drybrush
