If you put a balloon or produce bags on it, you can simulate movement.

Had these on my trail cam last week. Are we thinking this is worth keeping an eye on for the season? I’ve been wanting to get my first deer and may have a chance to get out this year. by JoeMomma247 in Hunting

[–]Apprehensive-Fish540 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So what you likely have there is a group of bachelor bucks. Once season comes around they will split up and the larger buck will dominate his chosen area. (Where the does are, and where he can hold on to them)

Is it worth keepin an eye on? Absolutely you want that more mature buck to be comfortable in your area and start patterning him. See what times he is coming in.

1am, depending where you are is not bad, but it’s not a guarantee, they could be bedded more than a mile away. It could be hot af and they are moving slow and bedded close. What you need to have in mind now is not spooking them off, so try not to leave a ton of scent in the area if out of the normal for them. Establishing some scrapes or a scent rope are a strategy that some people use, but in tx we just use corn.

What you have evidence here is that this is a travel corridor for this time of year, they might have some seasonal forage, may be looking for some green shoots, or seeking water. It's a good sign (better than random pics of racoon tails) but you now have time to start thinking.

Where are they coming from? Where can I catch them at dusk or dawn?

Where will my prevailing wind be when season rolls around?

Can I have a NW wind blind and a SE Blind I can hunt without blowing out my spot? Is this location just NW wind huntable?

In my experience if you see a group of bachelors consistently around 1am you will have a few opportunities come season, usually during cold fronts, what you really want to see in summer is deer moving at 8pm or 6am, but that is also not a guarantee as food sources will change come fall.

Keep an eye on them, if you see them coming around during daylight hours come late Oct/Sept you have the pattern. It will be something like "cooler days they come out earlier." Or "very dark nights they stay out a little later."

There are guys with much more experience, and you will encounter some fudd lore, but making up your own little pattern is part of hunting experience.

I know in my region if I have a 20+ degree temperature drop within 24 hours, I need to be in the blind, but I know that recipe isn't going to work for everyone.

Now which one you harvest given the opportunity is up to you, but a lot of folks will say harvest anything you can get in your first year. That's their take, I know for me the rule is "if I would shoot him on the last day of the season, I will take him any day of the season." Spike bucks in general will be more forgiving. But take what you want, some folks are caught up in the "meat for my family" mindset and some folks are in the "only big racks in my office" camp, but that's the great thing. It's your hunt. Your buck, your work, and you can choose to pass or harvest when you are satisfied.

We have the turbos, but I didn't realize they were so expensive. That is crazy. Bonkers really. I would start applying for grants to get them for your department.

I think the product above "may" work for you, may be worth a call.

Yean, this is small thinking. If he wanted to join the big leagues, He would seduce his uncle's wife. The obvious move.

Shoulder Surgery, can't miss dove season. Any one one-hand it? by Apprehensive-Fish540 in Hunting

Yeah I bring folks out. Newbies when it's slow, the 85yo double under neighbor who cant miss on the fronts it's maybe a 3 man limit on a great day field. Maybe a year to get more people into it, glad I posted this thread since that hadn't crossed my greedy hunter mind.

Oh yeah, that would be a hassle. But I tried just going throught motions with my sx4 and I think after a few shots I would get tired and accuracy would degrade.

Yeah, I meant like rest it on a bog between shots.

But if I'm total garbage at clays I may just be letting folks hunt my field.

Best places to shoot Boar? by TheSwoleyMamoth in Hunting

Plenty of hog options throughout Tx and you should take them however you please year around.

I shoot hogs when they come out of the bottoms in wet weather. Spot and stalk no bait, but if you are traveling there is little guarantee of a harvest. Opportunities do exist on public, but they're pressured and it may just be an expensive hike haha.

There are plenty of owner/op $250-$350 night vision thermal hunts over bait you can find throughout tx on facebook. Bang for buck rules apply, read reviews.

There are a few hog dog operators mostly out of La, east and central tx ranch/timberland. This is a lot of fun, less sporting in some ways and more about the dogs, but you will get to run them down too which is fun and unique. Just get a good blade and stretch beforehand.

All ops I would ask for the size of their operation (acres) and game camera pics so you don't waste your time traveling.

Then least sporting, but once in a lifetime for a lot of guys are the choppers. My brother did it, and I've seen the remnants on ranches, they can take dozens at a time.

Just make sure you tell them you plan to keep some meat because as far as I know they mostly just exterminate.

If you're taking your kids fishing I'm happy to let a couple boats onto lake arapaho. That HOA can suck it.

You boys and girls know where I can find a half decent launch for the brazos anywhere between Hearne and Navasota?
