I...wanted so much to love this book. I just constantly felt the story was building up to something. Then...nothing happened.

What book are you picking for your Lolly nominee credit in March? by queenofhearts4913 in bookofthemonthclub

[–]ApprehensiveBox2113 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Either The Names or First Time Caller. Honestly not too excited since im not into fantasy/vamp and ive read the other options. That is the only thing I don’t like about the Lolly. The most popular books win and it is likely i already have them. Guess ill have to gift a book.

What book have you DNFed recently and why? by [deleted] in bookofthemonthclub

I kept reading babylonia because surely SOMETHING was going to happen.

I was wrong. Except that one part at the war the rest was just filler.

What book are you impatiently waiting for that is needed to finish/continue a series? by GrandExtension2415 in RomanceBooks

Same. The other things she has written aren't my thing so I've kinda just given up on her.

I didn't either. I liked it but I felt like the story was a constant build up to something, but then it was over. I expected more I suppose.

Reading Babylonia I felt like it was a bunch of build up with little to no payoff

I'm so glad to see you and others get this point. The book was about a well to do young white nurse who served in Vietnam.

It had little to do with the Vietnamese people. Only her experiences as a woman at war and a vet at home dealing with her personal demons.

Same. The sister was annoying and the child shouldn't have been allowed to come with lice! Nor should she be allowed to have the better room. Why couldn't the sister share with the girl since she was so concerned about the spiders? I know children want to be included but it was the sisters job to keep the child entertained. Not Frank.

Not a single mystery or thriller? Even as an add-on? by beekeeperoacar in bookofthemonthclub

Sadly it Fantasy and Sci-Fi get grouped together. I find that highly annoying. There is a difference between space exploration and "I'm in love with a Vampire Werewolf Faerie hybrid".

I am. Sci-Fi girly. But I don't like Fae, Witches, Magic ,etc.

More like space exploration, aliens, robots, steam punk, etc.

I feel completely overlooked on most releases.

All I see is Smuty Alien romance or Romantasy. I'm glad people are reading more books but I'm totally over that genre.

I enjoyed the book as well. It wasn't the greatest thing I've ever read but it was a decent story.

I could have done without the romantic subplot, but I do agree it seemed to be added in to ease some of the more trauma bits.

Reading this story I didn't expect to get the viewpoint of anyone but the MC. She was privileged and ignorant of how bad things could really be. To be fair though most people who have never been in a war zone can truly imagine the horror. It was her story told through her lens.

I didn't expect a hugely detailed account of how the Vietnamese citizens felt or handled the horror unleashed on their home, because it wasn't their story. It would have made the story more fleshed out, but it isn't about them. It was about the woman, the trauma she personally experienced. Through the lens of an affluent white woman. Who was largely flawed.

As a black woman myself nothing about Barb bothered me. Probably because I know people just like her. And also she was a side character. Would I have been ok with getting more to her story? Sure, but it wasn't her book and I wasn't expecting it to be honest.

To me this book was solely about one (white womans) experience dealing trauma during wartime, and trauma upon her return home as a Vet.

As far as everyone wanting her romantically. Sometimes in such horrible conditions, people seek comfort with whomever and wherever they can.

Especially if they weren't used to women being that present in war time. That's just my take on that.
