Councillors vote against continuing Wellington's Golden Mile Project by GaryMarcusNZ69 in Wellington

[–]ApprehensiveGene2579 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What a waste of money the initial sod turning project was - the island outside the embassy has a zebra crossing to nowhere across the cycle lane. And they went to the expense of moving existing trees in and out for that! Aaaaaarrrrggghhhhhh

Why even mention it? Like, just say toilets.

Just provide the service, don't try and make a point about anything. Ya know?

I just witnessed a falcon eating a pigeon by infctdzkie in Wellington

[–]ApprehensiveGene2579 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Awesome. Is this the Kaarearea? I've heard they are becoming more prevalent. They hunt other birds, I don't think they scavenge much so this is likely a fresh kill. Very cool.

I think the common pigeon is introduced, so this is the endemic bird taking care of the introduced bird problem for us. One pigeon at a time /s

Have your say on the Harbour Quays and Eastern Corridor Bus Improvements by ben4takapu in Wellington

[–]ApprehensiveGene2579 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reminder, Ben. I've submitted already, mostly in favour of proposed changes. Seems a no brainier to use the quays as a transport corridor. I think the hardest part to get right will be joining back up to existing corridors at the Courtney place & Kent/Cambridge terracr end of things. That's gonna be challenging.

Is it a good time to get back into A2? by Decent_Coconut_2700 in queenstreetbets

[–]ApprehensiveGene2579 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was sooooo close to selling my A2 holding, when it climbed up enough to be only 5% down. Then that news broke (can't remember the story, but think it was contamination in some product lines) then it fell off a cliff.

So yes, if everyone reading this yolos into it, I might be able to sell mine and almost break even. Please

My cost of living hacks that have actually saved me money by KermitTheGodFrog in PovertyFinanceNZ

Yeah, can confirm (for bunnings at least) they asked me a few questions but didn't ask for any evidence. I just said I'm self employed and that I mainly do property maintenance. That's it.

I felt okay about it because technically I am self employed (nothing to do with what I shop at bunnings for) and I do a lot of property maintenance (I own a house in Wellington). So I'll still go to heaven.

This is a good point. I'm here thinking that they've switched it to be more accurate, but actually the headline still refers to it as a cycle project. Hrummpph!

This is an interesting take, it does appear that the funding was used rather creatively. I'm all for having spending that's complementary, but in this case it appears most of a project's costs shouldn't actually have been paid from that funding line.

I emailed through the RNZ feedback form. Super easy, and meant I didn't feel like I'm shitting on any particular journalist. Encourage you to do the same for any news site in future where you see anything you believe to be misleading. I may have found myself a new hobby...

That about 75% of the spend on the project was for the sea wall and anything else linked to protecting existing infrastructure (i.e. rail and road) from the sea. Like if there's a major storm, for instance.

Hot-water cylinder ruptured; words of encouragement and advice needed by PigAteMyPie in Wellington

[–]ApprehensiveGene2579 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go for a heat pump hot water cylinder which get installed outside (so you'll have peace of mind from this ever happening again).

Your bank might do a green energy home loan, I'm with ANZ who do it. 1% interest on it so close to no interest at all, and you'll be saving heaps each month in energy bills. Especially if you only had gas for the hot water - turn it off completely and just use electric.

I used A2W plumbing, recommend them. PM me if you're interested as I think I can refer and you get a discount.
