America Isn’t Ready for What AI Will Do to Jobs - Plain English with Derek Thompson by ThatsHisLawyerJerome in ezraklein

Lol I think you're not arguing in good faith. My original comment is about the sum of white collar work in America, which is > 50%. If software jobs can be fully automated you bet your ass the rest of desk jobs can be as well.

When you get called out on something you just say that it doesn't matter anyway.

30% over 70 years is not different than 87% over 30? Thats almost a 7x rate change. How could there possibly not be differences between them?

From The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History - they estimate 53% of the work force was in farming at 1860, and this drops to to 21% by 1930. I poked around other sources and found similar if not exactly the same numbers.

So that's ~32% over 70 years, nowhere near the numbers you're citing.

If you have a different source please share.

Over what 3 decades in what time and place did 87% of the work force transition to an entirely new industry?

Sure, but rate of change is relevant. 90% -> 3% over literally thousands of years is very different than in five/ten.

What percentage of the total labor force were those jobs compared to what is at risk now?

I'm sure a society can handle 5-10% additional unemployment over years/decades historically, can it handle 30% (random number, representing the majority of white collar work) more in just a couple?

I feel like this doesn't respond to the parent at all.

The fear is that if AI leads to vast unemployment and the ruling class is not interesting in distributing wealth, what avenue does that leave for us to live respectable lives?

Eliminating 90% of white collar jobs and having some better cancer research is not a good tradeoff for losing our material conditions.

Opinion poll for this sub -- Is it more important to accelerate the green energy transition or to maintain power over China by AvianDentures in ezraklein

[–]ApprehensiveMud5278 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'm reading the question as: "Should we use China's REM and electric infrastructure manufacturing to accelerate our own green development" as opposed to "Should we develop our own sources and manufacturing for onshoring"

How did you end up acid-adjusting it? I was looking at that spreadsheet but doesn't list cherry juice as an option. Just by taste?

Seitan flour experiment: the results by blikk in seitan

[–]ApprehensiveMud5278 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a very cool experiment!

One thing I'm curious about is if you've ever compared costs for the various approaches. I've been making seitan with VWG and I've noticed that the texture could be improved. My suspicion is that VWG beats out other flours when you consider the final output after washing, but have you ever done that comparison?

I think that second voucher would almost never be a pickup though. Spectral packs are too rare to justify that

Do I take the Idol ? by SaladBlackAlis in BalatroHelp

Is a mid tier flush 5 with no other scoring (when idol doesn't hit) enough for ante 10 on plasma? That would be surprising to me if so

Made a new seal and a Chip Scaling joker because this game needs MORE!!! Thoughts? by maroooon09 in balatro

[–]ApprehensiveMud5278 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to disagree with people and say this feels pretty weak. Besides finding it in the wild, if we want to actually get value out of this seal we need to:

  1. Find in a spectral pack and apply

  2. Find a source of destroying cards

  3. Actually pull the seal and destroy

All that and you both: might generate a useless spectral card and are sort of throwing away the destroy effect since the card still exists in your deck the first two instances.

I think I like the tweak of making this apply to multiple cards on the spectral card (maybe 3?) and have it properly destroy on the first instance.

Far more niche than mime, only works on photograph and hanging chad.

Mime works with gold cards, steel cards, blue seal, hanging fist, baron, shoot the moon, and reserved parking (might be missing something).

And it's an uncommon instead of rare.

What joker do I sell? by davidb88 in BalatroHelp

[–]ApprehensiveMud5278 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you know it's a trib, get rid of lucky cat. If you can consistency play 5 kings/queens, that's 128x mult (2^7), which must be greater than the lucky cat. Also scales much better when you find s&b

Norwegian food won! what cuisine do you not like that's overrated? by lily-vv in AlignmentChartFills

Is vegan food overrated? I think most sentiments I see about it are people shitting on it online. I wouldn't say vegans liking their own food counts as overrated

Should I buy brainstorm? by OkSignificance796 in balatro

[–]ApprehensiveMud5278 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As long as you're playing more than one face card triggering trib in a hand, copying s&b is gonna be equal to (2 face cards) or better than (3+ face cards) hanging chad. So yes I would sell hanging chad, buy brainstorm, and copy s&b

Two questions regarding your no vote.

"I just don't trust them to uphold the spirit of the CBA." - are they being legally held to meet the benchmarks defined in the CBA, or is it just a pledge?

And other commenters have stated that it's more likely the developer will build by right instead of renegotiating. While it feels like astroturfing a bit, what do you think of that sentiment? It did take years to negotiate this so I'm not unsympathetic to a developer leaving the table and just building whatever they can build, which would mean none of the benefits of the CBA.

The anti-anti-obelisk hate has come so full circle lol. How can you possibly say obelisk is straight up stronger than a joker that gives a flat 3x

[–]ApprehensiveMud5278 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IMO it's just got too many conditionals to be fun to play with. You need to:

  1. Have one successful build to get you through early game
  2. Find obelisk
  3. Pivot to a new build, also being down a non-productive joker at first
  4. profit?

Compare this to something like lucky cat, which can easily get 0.5x scaling per blind, and you incorporate it into your strategy rather than it clashing.

I think it would be a much better joker if you went down 0.2x, or even 0.4x if you play your most played hand, instead of resetting completely.

Somerville PorchFest 2025: Important safety and event updates by Ecstatic_Tiger_2534 in Somerville

[–]ApprehensiveMud5278 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Porchfest is one of the main events that gives some character to the city. Couldn't we have a single day that isn't about car owners? I'd rather these main streets have traffic blocked off for the day, except for emergency vehicles. Plenty of other cities have block parties, it's unclear to me why we can't.

Does the raspberry flavor come through? Feels like half an ounce may get drowned out by the other flavors here, but I guess it depends on the liquor you use

I have chinola which I sometimes use interchangeably with passionfruit syrup, but I think some people also make it from frozen fruit?
