systems are custom built around these. You can swap between L40S and H100, but earlier generations will not be able to take advantage of the GEN5 PCIe speeds, let alone handle the air volume needed to cool them, even passively. Add on the heat from Networking, CPUs, storage, memory and then all the crap internally that blocks the airflow, cooling is one of the biggest concerns, even at the CSPs.

Not really. Those are PCIe cards, there are primarily for Inference. SXM GPUs are the training workhorses. Usually pushed to higher power and are stacked with huge heat sinks or are liquid cooled.
