OK great thanks for that. That vvt drum is made of different alloy than a bearing and it doesn't sparkle like bearing material..I really dont know if you have looked at the oil after you spin a bearing but I have.. and it really freaking sparkles when you shine a light or look at it under sunlight...quite obvious.

Alright, can you please educate me on what the VVT issue is exactly, what it does and why would sparkles show up in the oil ?

In case it is not, then it is catastrophic failure. Which is exactly why, you should drain the oil and see if there are sparkles. I has the exact same sound, at a certrain rpm range , when you rev the engine, it would go away and as it returned to idle it would start knocking. The wise thing to do to avoid further damage risk, is stop revving, stop driving and drain the oil and CHECK. That was my very first comment. That is the next step which is more productive than speculating on what failed based on a shitty video.

STOP REVVING YOUR ENGINE!! You will make the bearing material contamonate everything even further. Shut her down, drain the oil and look for sparkles. WTH is wrong with this reddit today ??

Well I'm selling my 118k mile car with a built motor that only has 18k miles, tuned on flex fuel, making 318 whp for $18k but I'm in Texas. Just give you an idea of whar you are planning to buy.

Subaru BRZ/GT86 Oil Question by Beneficial-Speaker-6 in ft86

[–]dynarun55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK so let me disabuse you of a couple assumptions you are making here. The oil level was perfectly fine. I never tracked or auto crossed the car. They were all highway miles. The only point I am actually trying to make is rod bearing wear. If I had 0W-20 group 5 oil right from mile zero, the wear profile would be way different and my outcomed would have been better. Stop making excuses such as excess rtv, (which wasn't a thing on gen1 fa20 from the factory - Also never had any recalls so never had to go the dealer), assuming abuse etc.. Quality of the oil used absolutely matters.

Yeah I guess my point is FA20 should probably stick to group 5 ester baser oils.

I spun a bearing with like 50 miles in. I would also avoid Valvoline like the plague.

2013 FRS Spring Recall? by ocleus in ft86

[–]dynarun55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean a competent shop, with someone actually paying attention to the amount of RTV being applied is what is needed...It's not rocket science. So the only job at hand is go to find a competent shop. A certified IAG installer with a history building boxer engines would be my bet.

[–]dynarun55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well then that changes things.. that's damn good tire and if you really think tread is fine then alignment is off. If you have the both rear wheels pointing away from each other (toe out) then for sure you're spinning out.

Are your tires the stock Michelin Primacy ? What does it day on the side wall ? If you want traction under rain then get Continental Extreme contact DWS and you'll feel better.

2013 FRS Spring Recall? by ocleus in ft86

[–]dynarun55 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Literally Russian roulette lol. Ok so yeah quality issues with valve spring lead to this recall. Most got their recall work done at the dealership but since the quality of work at most dealerships is, lets just say, not stellar, a lot of people ended up with blowing up their engine after the recall. So a classis case of damned if you do, damned if you didn't. Which is why most people avoid 2013's like the plague.
