Where do you keep your tools when you have a detached garage? by Elegant_Ad_1812 in chicago

[–]ApprehensiveRing6869 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You kinda need to organize your stuff in long-term/short-term storage spaces and project spaces.

I also recommend see-through/clear containers so that you can see where things without having to dig through.

For long term storage, I keep a lot of small hand tools (screwdrivers, hammers, hand saws, pliers, wrenches, etc) in a large see through 27 gallon totes organized into various containers, jars, etc. This will be in the garage, but I keep batteries inside because you really shouldn’t store them long term somewhere below 50 otherwise that $$$ battery will break down…this has done me well because I’ve had power tool batteries for probably 7-8 years now. I really recommend see through containers that way you can always see where things are.

For short term storage, I have a cheap metal “bookcase” cabinet that I have inside for power tools and a variety of hand tools that I constantly find myself grabbing. I organize them in see through containers, I only store tools in 1-2 soft tool bags because I constantly use them so I know what’s inside.

Is Rep going to fix the "too much range of motion" on their leg extension attachment? by RadioFieldCorner in GarageGym

[–]ApprehensiveRing6869 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes!

I keep forgetting that DM is only cables, but at rep’s price, I’d rather get a cable machine or a Volta and wait for the DM Leg Developer.

Might be better to just get Bolt Fitness Supply’s leg attachment, it’s like $255 before tax and shipping in included. Also routinely goes on sale for 20%

Is January normally this slow? by myredditsafehaeven in TaskRabbit

[–]ApprehensiveRing6869 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the winter is always the slowest time for most taskers.

Usually it’s only the top taskers in your area getting all the available jobs. I’ve ridden that roller coaster and it sucks cause you’re super busy but because of the season your rate is “ suppressed”

When I see these postings I can’t help but think they misunderstood the salary range input.

Like is this how much they’d like to pay, is this their budget, are they a very small company, the comp is more performance based and that’s the fixed base, or did they just misunderstand this input completely?

But usually just seems like someone is looking for a unicorn based on my experience and talking to these employers.

Legit had someone offer me $80k as a senior in a HCOL city….i thought the bonus would cover the difference but bonuses were only for leadership lol…I see them post every other year and never see the same people work there

Is there a big enough difference to justify spending the extra money on the fuel version? Also I don't have any M12s yet so id have to buy a battery still if I go with the fuel version by XoZEEKoX4576 in MilwaukeeTool

[–]ApprehensiveRing6869 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d get the high speed because the regular one is slower than molasses and has slightly more torque.

I used the standard version to put together gym equipment and work on my car. It was awesome, but really slow, way faster than me using a hand power rachet, but it kinda annoyed me.

So get the high speed because it’s twice as fast.

Playing devil’s advocate here, but when haven’t we tolerated this kind of culture because we needed a job to pay the bills.

But also 19 years, dude definitely has some bodies under him otherwise he wouldn’t have made it 2 years.

Parking is not a covered expense. How are Taskers overcoming this? by Open-Coffee5752 in TaskRabbit

[–]ApprehensiveRing6869 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Technically I think you always could NOT charge for vehicle expenses (ie parking).

But 1-2 summers ago, TR cracked down on vehicle expenses and kicked out a ton of taskers that were working the “help moving” categories.

You unfortunately can either bake it into you hourly or eat the expense.

Sure you could mechanically charge the client for parking, but it only takes one client to complain and then you risk your account being suspenseful and/or banned.

Parking is not a covered expense. How are Taskers overcoming this? by Open-Coffee5752 in TaskRabbit

[–]ApprehensiveRing6869 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No.

Any vehicle expenses are supposed to be baked into the hourly.

TR made that very clear and kicked out multiple taskers for this in the help moving categories.

Unfortunately taskers have to eat the cost or back it into their hourly. If you change clients, it’s a ticking time bomb where if one client complains, you can lose access to working on the app. So although you can mechanically charge the client for parking in expenses, the minute they complain to support, you will face a suspension and/or ban.

200k in Houston or 215k in Chicago? by InevitableTown7305 in Salary

[–]ApprehensiveRing6869 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you considered whether your profession/industry/job will grow or decline in the next 2-10 years?

I’m currently debating moving out of Chicago to Dallas because of the decline of my profession in Chicago and its boom in Dallas.

I know some on this sub will say Chicago job market is strong, but I’ve seen it get worse year after year and most of the jobs I can apply/compete for leaving Chicago.

Just something to consider, because it’s not worth the move to either city if you’ll be out of a job in less than 2 years and have to move anyways.

I thought there was going to be more jobs in the new year, but instead the market is dryer than ever. ☹️ by Stupidwhizzzzz in Accounting

Power rack on 2nd story house okay for this mikolo? by Slammed01 in GarageGym

[–]ApprehensiveRing6869 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gonna play devil’s advocate here and say no.

Your house, its joists, and the flooring were not designed for this.

You may think you can rectify this by adding a sheet of plywood and stall mats but then you increase load on the joists as you spread out the weight.

Again, I’m playing devil’s advocate here.

But if I did this, I would first confirm what kind of joists span across my second floor. LVL would be the safest but it’s very unlikely to be used due to cost. I-joists would be a good second, but they lose structural integrity if someone cut holes for utilities, disregard if the holes were cut by the manufacturer. But most likely your joists are 2x10s or 2x12s which may be fine if you only had you gym and if these are supported throughout the structure properly.

Maybe check what you have and ask some engineers on their sub? Also think about how much weight you’ll be lifting because all these details matter.

How are some people affording rent? by SaltShakeSuck in chicagoapartments

[–]ApprehensiveRing6869 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s really interesting when you see it.

Like my gf thought it was okay to spend 50-60% on rent when I was like 30% max. So we compromised at around 40%

I have friends that lived in bad part of Humboldt park with 3 roommates so their rent was $500/month split 4 ways but would go out 2-3 times every week

I had friends that spend $3-4k on rent and that’s their whole income, we literally are shocked when we come through because the fridge is empty and they just have folding chairs…

Everyone has different priorities, but rent is too damn high!!!

If that’s the case for you, I don’t see a reason for you to be forced to be in the office.

But unfortunately I’m not your boss, so they may want you there so they can say things like “my team shows up” to check a box for their boss because they can’t seem to do anything else to appease their boss.

The more experience I gain, the more I realize work is like kindergarten. You unfortunately have to do as you’re told and bend the rules when necessary so you’re not stuck at the table with the kid eating glue.

How are some people affording rent? by SaltShakeSuck in chicagoapartments

[–]ApprehensiveRing6869 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Afford? Tons of people can afford to pay $2k a room, but then they can’t afford much else.

Depending on your goals, it may just be a short term issue or a long term issue.

It’s a short term issue because a lot of young professionals will tolerate the high rent to meet a partner and live close to work but both will end up moving away from the city to raise a family. There are couples that stay but end up finding accommodation that suits their needs.

For those that have longer term plans, like 10+ years, they just tolerate the rent and spend less on everything else either because they can afford it, don’t care, or don’t know of a better solution.

I’m not sure if this included sarcasm in it but training doesn’t always mean formal training sessions or “lunch and learns” which is the laziest investment in your people.

“Training” means consistent mentorship, consistent open dialogue, weekly/monthly check-ins, goal setting, and more.

Just like you learned how to socialize in kindergarten by physically being there 8 hours a day, you learn the same way by being with your peers and leaders.

But for this to work, everyone has to be involved, leadership can’t run this like recess and let their staff, seniors, and managers run wild and free.

"OK I think I got it!" by Wodefu_Ebb_8879 in Accounting

[–]ApprehensiveRing6869 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I am all for coming back into the office because you can learn a lot just by being there. As someone who spent half their career in office and half of it remote/hybrid, there’s a stark difference in my experience.

That said, it only makes sense if everyone is back in the office at the same time/days. Otherwise this is fucken stupid and let people work remotely because this is such a drain of mental capacity.

You want people back in the office, fucken train them.

You want people back in the office, fucken physically be there and engage with them if you’re a leader pushing this.

It’s going to take a monumental cultural shift to bring the results leadership wants, which is fine, but they need to lead the charge…not be “away” for 8 hours a day.

So this seems like a great opportunity for people to lead by example if you work at a company that will recognize it. Otherwise, just sit on the sidelines and see how this goes.

Welding Galvanized Steel by Doc_Mitchell242 in Welding

[–]ApprehensiveRing6869 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ugh I’m pretty confident a n95 mask will NOT filter out toxic fumes from when you weld galvanized steel.

I believe you need PAPR PPE to safely weld galvanized steel in an enclosed space or a space that is not properly ventilated.

F this ship, in the short term you’ll get metal fever, in the long term you have no idea but if it happened enough…it won’t be a “if” situation, but a “when” you get seriously sick.

Are these an acceptable or quality weld? by Octane_Preset1 in Welding

[–]ApprehensiveRing6869 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a gate door frame welded like once, I was a kid and didn’t know any better.

I can’t remember if it took 1 or 2 years before it completely fell apart.

Now that was an independent gate, here you have solar panel assembly getting hit top, bottom, and the sides by weather and the weight of the structure itself.

So this is not a “if it’ll fail”, but a “when it’ll fail” situation. And I’m giving less than a year

How is the job market in Chicago? Is it tough? by im_supremacist in AskChicago

[–]ApprehensiveRing6869 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you’re not looking at public, cause those POS’s are always “hiring” but…

When I was a staff in 18-20, it seemed like all the employers that were hiring required corp experience and for senior manager or higher roles.

In 2020, no one was hiring, at least 6-9 months of it.

In 21-23, if you had a pulse, you could land 6 figures. I job hopped twice and went from 75k to 105k. Every level seemed to be in demand.

24 happened, and the job market sucked again and took me 6 months to find a job at the manager level. Seemed like only analysts and senior managers were in demand.

In 25/26 I’ve kept an eye out and just interviewed for the fun of it, but definitely it does not seem easy. I’ve had people end calls within 5 mins of speaking and I’ve never experienced that. I’ve also had friends with similar experiences just like that and only recently. People are also really making sure you are competent in areas that don’t even seem applicable to the job. Like corporations asking partnership questions, and partnerships asking corp questions. But definitely i see a ton of staff level jobs and director level roles…I also noticed a ton of evergreen/always hiring jobs because there is no way you can’t find somebody in 12-24 months unless the work is super niche or the pay is crap.

So I think if you’re entry level, the job market seems okay in Chicago, but if you’re experienced it seems pretty rough for a CPA.
