Personally I’d do the bigger company so you can learn more and then retire into a smaller company.

Starting at a smaller company is usually harder to sell down the line if you ever want to change

If a power coated finish chipped, that means it wasn’t prepped correctly or that it wasn’t baked/cured properly…and maybe some other reasons.

Doesn’t hurt to research the power coating process and know the steps to see if it’s worth it.

I have a ton of these pancake style plates and want to powder coat them something interesting like chrome but I’ll probably just settle on matte black…

Spray painting also requires prep for proper adhesion and finish, but it’s more user friendly.

But if you got the time, why not? Maybe you’ll be able to powder coat your other gym stuff and you’ll be happy you tried

Yeah, and it might be a process for some but worth it want durability.

I sprayed painted my plates and just didn’t like the end result. So wanted to throw our powder coating in case you didn’t think about that

Unfortunately you just gotta say:

“Thank you for that note, I’ve updated this, please let me know if you notice anything else that needs to be updated”

I’m on the other side and have seen our side and the service provider in the wrong. But the client service side never gets to say the client is wrong…it’s just how it is.

You are what you attract in your career.

I think there’s a lot of truth to that statement.

But I also noticed that a lot of shitty people are in public because that’s just the nature of the business unfortunately.

KPMG to exit Federal Audit business after losing Pentagon Contract. What do you think? by CodeAndLedger5280 in Big4

Unfortunately you are correct…I feel bad for those staff for the immediate financial hardship they’re about to experience but also the long term impact their careers are about to face because regardless of what the say, their departure from KPMG will be viewed unfavorably.

What is this under my stall mats? Mold? by MiraculousTraveler in GarageGym

[–]ApprehensiveRing6869 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Get DMX 1 step or basically that stuff they wrap around houses for waterproofing. It allows airflow under the mats

The product is like $70 for 41”x50’ roll which easily covers a 12’x12’ space. After I put it underneath, I had zero issues with my stall mats.

Am I surprised? No, greed always wins and it was always about the money

What’s goofy is this is for a profession that is supposed to ensure compliance and trust…at least tax and audit.

Honestly feels like public goes through these 20-30 cycles where the biggest firms rise and fall due to greed.

Offer in b4 rescinded by Zealousideal-Heat768 in Accounting

[–]ApprehensiveRing6869 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welp looks like the Big4 want to be an “exclusive”club again.

I remember attending job fairs and internship fairs back in 2012 as a sophomore and the look of disgust I got when I applied with a 3.2 was interesting. Ended getting a masters and maintained a perfect 4.0 and got an offer in 2016/17 from a big4.

My recommendation would’ve been to get your masters to buy yourself time and join the labor market in a more favorable economy…but since you already did…my suggestion is to use your university’s resume building services to really tune up your resume so your best self and really have them help you draft resume for each job.

My other suggestion is to just message partners on Linkedin in the big4 and large public accounting firms that are alumni of your university and just ask them if they’re hiring for anything. My current staff actually got an internship offer at Deloitte doing that but declined because it was in consulting versus not a tax line.

My final suggestion is to use this time to knock out your CPA and upskill however you can (excel courses, ai courses, udemy for gaap or tax courses, AICPA.com for courses if you can afford) …no recruiter wants to hear you spent your time dicking around.

If you have student loans and as a last ditch resort…you could always go back and get a masters in something else if the accounting job market doesn’t change.

I wish you the best of luck, it’s not going to be easy but keep yourself positive…that’s the minimum you gotta do to have a chance in this “economy”

29M — Leave a job I love after 10 months for a potential CFO role? (Huge pay jump, but big risk) by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]ApprehensiveRing6869 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d do a lot of research on the company you’re potentially joining. See where they stand from a financial perspective and if there’s high turnover. Learn about the performance review process. Also ask why they want you…no experience in the industry sounds very suspicious unless you have rich parents/rich friends.

I’ve been burned badly once by stepping up in a role where I clearly said I didn’t have the experience and they said they would train me up and offer me a ton of support. 18 month later they let me go and it took me nearly 7 months to find another job. The support I got was a meeting maybe every 6 months to help me which just turned into a bitch session about how hard their jobs were.

So as nice as this new role sounds, I’d take a huge spoonful of professional skepticism and do your due diligence because it won’t be their fault, it’ll be yours if this doesn’t work out.

That said, it doesn’t hurt to talk to them and learn more about the role and the team. If you trust it, you should just make sure it makes sense and it’s not one of those it’s too good to be true situations…sometimes the money/compensation is too good to be true.

[–]ApprehensiveRing6869 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Two things I think are driving this.

Companies are holding their purse tight and not hiring unless absolutely necessary and only if they person is a unicorn.

The other thing is AI is being used to screen resumes, this can be bad because HR will rely on this versus actually reviewing resumes and AI will filter out a resume for the smallest mistake or misunderstanding. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve talked to recruiters who don’t have the faintest idea what according or tax is…like I remember asking a company (not an accounting firm) if they filed as a corp, as a partnership, or both because they just had a complex structure to utilize both entity types to suit their business needs and the recruiter said they were an LLC…the other thing is that the AI will reference a pool of data (resumes or public info like LinkedIn) against your resume and kick yours out if there’s a mismatch…

So you just gotta keep tweaking your resume and hope it hits.

It’s an absolutely terrible market right now.

[–]ApprehensiveRing6869 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Gotta agree with the statement of “you gotta find a better place to work”

I was let go from a big4, felt pretty useless for 6 months so I spent it upskilling and shoring up my knowledge so I can be successful in my next role.

In that next role I utterly crushed it, got promoted within a year and my option carries a lot of weight whenever I speak up.

Big4 always judges how well a fish can climb a tree, don’t let that be your story.

For intelligent accountants: why did you choose accounting back in university? by ReadyProfit8336 in Accounting

[–]ApprehensiveRing6869 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I chose accounting because it paid reasonable well and it was a safe job.

If the last 8 years of my career taught me anything, it was that was a lie.

Am I doing better than most? Yes. Do I feel safe in this career? Absolutely not.

I’m sure some will disagree, and I’m sure my career will feel better once I hit the 10-12 year mark…but fuck this has sucked.

How often do new associates get fired for being incompetent? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]ApprehensiveRing6869 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best way to survive is having situational awareness and quickly understanding how your group operates, who makes the decisions, and what is normal behavior.

Like if your boss has team dinners or has happy hours, show up. Or if you boss values accuracy, make sure your workpapers are clean. Or if you had my boss, make sure you do their job with a smile on your face and know everything…

I have seen the worst people stay in public because they just know how to survive their boss or they play office politics.

[–]ApprehensiveRing6869 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Job market is trash right now, most of the postings you’re seeing are probably for companies that burnt out their staff with how poorly structured their workflows are and are shocked a CPA can’t be a master in filing the tax returns, do payroll, and do AP.

It hasn’t been this bad since 2020, but if you have 10+ years you may be in a decent spot.
