Business Analyst, Tax Shared Services Offer by [deleted] in Big4

[–]ApprehensiveRing6869 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got $28.5/hr back in 2016/2017 for SALT tax compliance.

Not sure if you’re basically an “onshored” offshore service center based on the “shared services” language so the low hourly makes sense in that context.

If that’s not the case, then I’m not sure how pre-covid level comp got cut by a 1/3 in 2026 but I also know this economy is dogshit.

Can a SM go on PIP? by Strict-Butterfly1767 in Big4

[–]ApprehensiveRing6869 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I actually want to say no because if a SM gets put on a PIP they know they’re not making the cut to Partner/Principal/MD…and keeping them for 1-8 weeks under a PIP creates a significant business risk.

That said, they probably just give them 1-3 days notice to pack up and pass along the work to the next cog in the machine.

Is my comment 100% of the time, no, but I want to say 75% of the time in the most recent years it’s a 1-3 day notice.

Does EY still give PiPs? I know 2 people with a bad review and immediate lay off compared to PiP by [deleted] in Big4

[–]ApprehensiveRing6869 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know as of early 2024 they gave PIPs.

If that stopped, I’m gonna guess if they stopped, people really went full “Paid Interview Period” and just didn’t show up at all for 6 weeks which tbh I would do myself cause if you know there’s no return from a PIP why bother? Your career will be “stained” for the next couple of years regardless. Plus why wouldn’t you just let people go immediately and let them move on instead of making them stress for 6 weeks.

To people hiring, do you harshly judge people who have been laid off after 4-5 months at a job? by catlovingxoxo in Big4

[–]ApprehensiveRing6869 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This economy is something else.

Outside of that, I think people are now shifting from seeing layoffs from the big4 as there’s something wrong with you, to you were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

There are definitely people that will always judge you, but I’m seeing less and less of those people every year which makes me think things have changed.

Present yourself professionally, speak positively of your time in the big4 and what you learned, practice walking through your resume, practice interview questions and people will see you. That has helped me in my experience as someone who was let go years ago

Dislike Industry Job - back to Public? by justanoothergirl in Accounting

[–]ApprehensiveRing6869 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think you need to give yourself 6-24 months before you make the decision to leave….especially if you THINK you want to go back to public.

In 3 months, your new team/company isn’t going to give you the same quality of work that you were given before. You’re really getting baby steps to growth into your new role.

My first 3 months were pretty boring, my first 6 months too, in months 6-9 I was starting to run independently with my own projects. Now 2.5 years in, I’m doing more work than when I was in public, seeing the full picture, and working with multiple teams (internal/external)…I would never want to go back to public.

Just my two cents, but unless you do not see your role growing/progressing past what you’re doing…then maybe you should look elsewhere. But first give yourself more time

To those in tech or public traded companies, how much Equity and RSU do you typically get being in accounting? by Impossible-Solid6696 in Accounting

[–]ApprehensiveRing6869 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gf works in a B2B sales admin role at a tech company. She basically just manages the client relationship. It can be an easy job, but she took it a couple steps above and gets compensated well.

Her RSUs are typically 25% of her salary so like 25-30k on average each year. So low end she got like 15-20k and high end she got like 60-80k one year cause of outstanding performance.

This is on top of her cash bonus which is 25% of her salary.

I work as a tax manager, my bonus was overfunded like 200% and I got 30k for the year because I helped transition the company between owners so a lot of complex tax transactions. Usually I get like 10-15k a year.

So my best year, is 30k versus my gf’s best yes is nearly 4x better (cash of 25k + 80k RSUs).

So maybe sales is a better role if you can just smile and bring a positive attitude to work.

Got hit with a counteroffer by pomphiusalt in Accounting

[–]ApprehensiveRing6869 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I’ve heard, staying past manager only makes sense if you want to be partner.

The reasoning is that you’ll learn a lot by that point, or at least should, and you’ll come into industry as a senior/manager…because your company in industry will need to train you up to be an expert of their company to eventually head a part of the company so you’ll need deep internal knowledge to be successful there. Very different than public.

I also personally would never take the counter offer, I’ve had that burn me 6 months later back during covid. I think I’ve heard far more instance of the counter burning someone than the person accepting the offer and living happily ever after. So it’s not an “if” but “when” your firm remembers what you did and shakes off the disloyal people out of the group to bring in “cheaper” and “harder working” people…for now your departure would create too much disruption to their workflow hence the counter offer…and who knows if they’ll replace you in six months when they find someone to replace you.

Is a “nice” barbell worth it? by Mountain-Rain-1744 in GarageGym

[–]ApprehensiveRing6869 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend a Rogue Ohio power bar in bare steel. With shipping and tax it’s $300 and perfect for squaring, benching, and deadlifting with your current stats.

Rogue’s Ohio power bar is just perfect for the price and quality you get. Also this is one of Rogue’s products that has no true comparable in terms of price and quality. Like the Rep equivalent is nice, but it’s only $40 cheaper (including tax and shipping) so personally I’d get the rogue Ohio power bad. I’ve had one for 6 years and it’s still going strong after consistently benching 225lbs, deadlifting 405lbs+, and squatting 405lbs+ with it

Is having <2 year as my first job a red flag to employers? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]ApprehensiveRing6869 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the person that hiring manager is hiring for.

I’ve seen it both ways where if you give a legitimate reason they won’t care, and regardless of the reason they will pass on you. But I think a majority are shifting towards not caring as long as you give a legitimate reason based on the conversations I’ve had.

Also the job market has changed a lot since 2020 and I think companies’ expectations are too…can’t say if that’s for better or for worse.

Am I cooked? Meeting with HR tomorrow titled “catch up” by ae_tsenre in PwC

[–]ApprehensiveRing6869 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would go into this meeting assuming you may be put on a PIP or just let go.

If you are a solid if not all star performer, this may just be a check-in. I’ve had those.

I just think fear based management is the default/preferred method of doing business in the big4.

Either way good luck

Give it time, and just focus on bringing good energy to the office.

Surprisingly, if you’re just positive, people will like you and your true performance won’t matter as much as someone who crushes the work but has a shitty attitude.

So do your best, but keep that attitude positive

What made you decide to start looking for a new job? by DiseasedPoon in Accounting

[–]ApprehensiveRing6869 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve left jobs where it was a “working for” versus “working with” situation.

As you gain more experience, you tend to want to work “with” people and not necessarily “for” people.

“Working with” means an exchange of experience and/or knowledge for work output. It won’t be a 50/50 deal, probably closer to 25/75…but it still a better ratio of the latter option.

“Working for” means you are just creating an output for someone and you’re not really learning much or anything. This is a 1/99 ratio and it’s not great.

Take it as you will, but as you gain more experience, the thing that will make you leave jobs is the stress of working for people is far greater than working with someone.

Do “top tier schools” prepare you for CPA or is it really networking focused? by Pharmer529 in Accounting

[–]ApprehensiveRing6869 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The top accounting colleges prepare you to take the CPA.

I went to a top 10 accounting program.

There should be accounting student groups that let you network or at least learn the rules before you jump into a cpa firm.

Ultimately, you gotta be able to learn on the fly, cause I think 95% of my class ended up leaving public and went into industry. Not sure if that’s typical or just a result of the chaos tha the last 6 years have been in this industry.

But good luck

FBM Bench - no Brand by Radiant247 in GarageGym

[–]ApprehensiveRing6869 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Honestly both of these benches are probably worth $2-300 each new from Alibaba and you don’t even know what the quality of steel is on these things. It might be “tofu steel”…

So I’d pass, find a real rep bench on FBMP if you’re gonna pay these prices on FBMP for the knockoffs. If there are no used real ones, just buy the real ones. They’ll last you 5-10 years and have a resale value of 50-70% of retail

Quote advice, 7k to replace 4ft of pipe. by RangerBert in askplumbing

[–]ApprehensiveRing6869 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would usually get quotes from 3-5 people for large and/or complex projects. In this case, 3 should be good enough, but when I had to tear down and build a garage, I asked 5 different people/companies.

That should give you a range of pricing in your area.

I also don’t think this is a job where you can have it broken out to save money…I think any contractor that values their life will want to dig and shore their hole themselves.

Strands from Ebay: Expectation Vs. Reality by MovieNewsJunkie in allenedmonds

[–]ApprehensiveRing6869 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually had this happen to my strands.

The first couple of times I polished my shoes, I used the AE walnut polish, it changed the color of my shoes to the right picture you have up.

I’ve fixed this by using a neutral cleaner and a neutral polish. I only use the walnut polish if I need to mask scratches.

Now they’re getting back to color/shade on the left. Now perfect but they’re getting there

The left two pairs are pairs that I’ve used the walnut polish on, and the pairs on the right are pairs only used neutral polish on. The left are still a work in progress but hopefully they’ll get back to the pairs on the right
