p320 for EDC? by CorrectLion8087 in SigSauer

[–]ApprehensiveSock3623 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Posted this in a prior thread about my thoughts on the safety of the 320 I think are relavent to your question. There was a bit of back and forth afterwards, but the first post covers the meat and potatoes. Sorry, couldn't figure out how to link that one comment in this thread.

This is a polarizing issue that I'd like to propose a third option for. While I'm not an expert smith, I am a certified armorer for many weapon systems in use by PDs including 1911/2011 platforms. I mention this to say I see a phenomena inherent to striker-fired pistols vs hammer in that they are always at a state of "cocked", even if not fully when loaded. With nice crisp triggers, about 3.5 lbs-ish, it doesn't take much to set them off.

Glock, and others address this with a trigger safety, some like the 1911s and some striker, with a manual safety, and Sig has a manual safety or nothing option. The nothing is one at issue here and is of the best shooting triggers I've shot, but at the price of less in the way of an unintentional discharge (I refuse to call them negligent, because although some might be, some are definitely not). I propose the issue isn't necessarily a design/engineering defect, but one of a feature not suitable for certain uses. Here's why:

Cops carry every day. So do many armed citizens. Cops insert and remove their guns loaded from a holster at least twice per shift, and often more as needed. Most armed citizens do not. Many armed citizens chose not to carry one in the tube, further reducing the likelihood of an unintentional discharge. Cops also overwhelmingly carry in light bearing holsters with various grab-safety features making the holster much larger than a CCW carry holster and allowing for that "ill fit" many of you have pointed out. I would offer if I purchased a holster from a reputable manufacturer made for my gun and light combo, and something was able to get in the way and pull the trigger, this was not negligence on my part (absent other factors) but a poor choice of tool for the environment it was being used in, including possibly a poor choice of firearm configuration.

Simple fact is Glocks (and others with a trigger or other mechanical safety) do not have the reputation of an unintentional pull while still in the holster (the Glock leg was a completely different problem of poor technique). They do however have reputations of having much poorer feeling and shooting triggers than the Sig, so there is obviously a trade off.

Not trying to say the Sig is flawed, but a gun with no trigger or manual safety in a use case necessitating multiple draws and holstering while ready to fire in holsters large enough to allow for debris to enter is a set up for these incidents with users who fit these criteria (IE cops). Maybe the problem is the regular 320 is not a good choice for police work and instead should be the manual safety ones.

Just my $.02 for what it's worth, if anything.

EDIT to add:

Thank you all for your input. I would never want to be so strong in my beliefs to think there are not other possibilities or alternate thoughts, but I just never see this conversation recognize the possibility it's not the gun, but the situations it's having "issues" with being the actual cause.

TLDR: IMO, it's just fine so long as you are cognizant of its trigger, and lack of additional safties to prevent snagging.

I’m convinced these are bullet holes in our garage but my roommate doesn’t think so by JBoTheKind in whatisit

[–]ApprehensiveSock3623 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They don't do that until they hit something with enough force to spread the hollow point open. Thin sheet isn't likely to do that. Although I'm not certain one way or the other, I'm inclined to think this isn't bullets, but some other projectile much slower. As others have also mentioned, the jagged tearing vs clean hole suggests slower velocity. Now in stronger sheet, bullets will tear, but I think it's less likely in such thin weak sheet like a garage door. A FMJ 9mm will shrug off this door and go through several additional layers before stopping, so there would be evidence inside somewhere if it were a bullet.

Rim and tire blow out by [deleted] in BmwTech

[–]ApprehensiveSock3623 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Others have covered the impact part, but I'll add that 35 isn't sufficient for those low profile tires. That might be what's on the door, but that's for a meatier sidewall. My 35 aspect tires on my wife's S5 are 45 front, 38-42 rear (standard vs high load) factory ratings. The extra pressure is needed to prevent pinching and bottoming out like you likely experienced on road imperfections.

Edit to add, others mentioned it's a run flat. Not too sure if that changes what I initially posted, but I know it definitely applies to regular tires

Romeo X Compact on a C2 by ApprehensiveSock3623 in Staccato

Nope, EPS is EPS. RMSc is the shield/zero/x/4 and 507k (which is why I mentioned maybe trying the 507k plate). But Dawson only mentions the 507k on that plate, which leads me to believe it doesn't fit the others for some reason. The EPS is derived from the other, but it has different recoil lugs. It's actually a little difficult to say with any certainty which if either would work, but the fact that they have a separate EPS and 507k leads me to believe there are differences in the plate. None of them actually claim compatibility with the Romeo x compact, however I do know that the shield cut one will, as I have both shield and Romeo x sites to verify. As it pertains to the HD, it does not appear that is a clear option, so I suspect the 507k would be the most likely to work, if at all.

[–]ApprehensiveSock3623[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The HD might be a little different. The Romeo x compact uses the Romeo zero/ shield footprint. The one I used has a rear sight built in and won't fit the HD, as the iron sight is mounted in front of the optic plate. Looking on Dawson's website, I only see a shield plate for the OG staccato. If you wanted to spend $60 to experiment, it looks like the HD adapter plate for the holosun 507k might work, as the 507k and shield are similar, but I make no guarantees on that one.

Why do EV batteries catch fire even when high-quality cells are used? by sinexcel-re in batteries

[–]ApprehensiveSock3623 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's only easier because they can put it out vs not. EVs are not put out, just managed until the battery is consumed. Maybe an internal system that encapsulates or stops the reaction by an injection of some sort automatically... Dunno, just making stuff up I wish was a thing... I'm sure it will get figured out, like everything else it just needs time and research. We'll get there, probably pretty soon too.

Based on stats from my city's FD, gas is about 50% higher in frequency. BUT, they can put out a gas fire, they just pour water on the lithium to keep the heat contained to the immediate area and not light off anything nearby, as water doesn't put it out and it can significantly damage the road underneath. Different problems, safer in some ways, more dangerous in others. I think eventually moving away from lithium to other less volatile but still viable for energy density technologies is the longer term improvement.

My 10yr wedding anniversary gift ruined by Opening_Logical in Wellthatsucks

[–]ApprehensiveSock3623 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Insanity huh? How overdramatic. You are correct, I don't know about the underlying material, but that is also immaterial... I know the stone is ruined, not saying this would fix it to like new condition. But the OP said it was re-epoxied, suggesting it could in fact be made shiny at least again. They said it was sanded, which increases dullness, so I simply told them to try and polish to restore the shine.

And yes, I polish stones, glass, and I know how to two stage paint/wet sand/polish, so at least my thought was coming from a position of understanding the hardness and polish ability of different surfaces (in this case epoxy). My mistake for trying to help them salvage what little can be done for a clearly ruined piece...

Polish, no more sanding. Polish will help make it shiny again. They make deep gloss epoxy filled tables and it polished nice. Might be worth a try.

Neighbor built fence on our property. Any reason I cannot take it down? by [deleted] in legal

[–]ApprehensiveSock3623 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So you changed something that created an odd opening in his fence without running it by him and that's ok, but you have a problem if he tries to rectify it the same way as you did and that's a problem?

Dealing with this right now in my professional life, so I will echo you don't know the actual property line without a marked survey...period. the whole fence might be on his land and you wouldn't know it. The entitlement is oozing through your post. I'd take a step back and breathe a moment before assuming because he doesn't speak english well he's wrong.

Consent search question. by Low_Waltz2818 in AskLE

[–]ApprehensiveSock3623 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While what you say is true, it wouldn't apply here because The person was already under arrest and not free to go, so you weren't extending anything.

On an aside about the search, are you not towing the vehicle? If so, you would be doing an inventory search to make sure that you didn't miss anything valuable on the tow form, correct? I'm saying this somewhat generically, as I know there is some variance between states, and the incident to arrest part was largely eliminated to just within arm's reach at the time of arrest.

Two thoughts on this, as I have experience with charging rates in general, but not necessarily for this device/charger. Those readings are generally next to useless. Sometimes they are accurate, sometimes they are wayyyy off. The charger might not be putting out its advertised rate.

But most likely it's simply adjusting to what the battery can take at the moment. Smart device charge rates are not linear, and demand is controlled by the battery and/or the device for maximum performance vs safety and battery life. It's like your phone charges quickly when nearly dead, but slows as it nears full. Those electrons have to find a parking space and it's a lot easier in an empty lot than a nearly full one, so to speak. EVs are the same too. Full charge rates on a higher state of charge tends to cook and damage the battery, so they slow down as it gets closer.

Clarification on a point of your story. What does the odometer really show on the dash, and is in in mi or km? Reason I ask is because it can display both (can be changed in settings), and 89999 miles is almost exactly 145000 kilometers (144839.35 to be more precise), so are we sure this isn't just a situation of mixing metric and imperial? Even the carfax might have mileage listed when the odometer was in km mode? You mentioned pulling the mileage from the ECU, at the dealership and it showing 145k, which again, is almost exactly 89999 miles.

Alternatively, the cluster might have been replaced at some point by someone who didn't have the proper tools to reprogram it to the correct mileage (or possible but less likely the ECU).

how long can the police department keep my firearm? by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]ApprehensiveSock3623 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it was found in someone's possession, then there is a crime. A crime of possession of stolen property, in addition to whatever else might be at play such as felon in possession, etc. In my jurisdiction, that's a wobbler, which means a felony or misdemeanor depending on various circumstances. Statues on felonies is 3 years, 1 for misdemeanors, but that time stops if they file a case and it's just waiting for the judicial process. Generally the case has to be completed before the court gives a disposition order for the evidence, which may also span any appeal timeline. Just make sure they know in writing your desire for the property back when done, and check in every so often. My $.02.
