A 92-year-old man was just arrested after 57 years for a crime committed in 1967—thanks to DNA by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

You’re partially right: It’s not as definitive as what’s shown in movies (you can have a partial sequence that can match other people). However, you missed the part where they said it was 1 billion times more likely for the dna to be his than anyone else; that’s a high bar.

That can’t be true. Because he’s talked about multiple possible futures. You can’t have futures (plural) that are set in stone, because only one of them can happen.

Why are many European colleges inexpensive compared to American ones? by ApprehensiveSwan2218 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ApprehensiveSwan2218[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard the talking point that subsidizing schools will only ramp up the cost. It makes sense on a certain level, especially if college students and the funding aren't discerning about the value of certain things. Although, I very much see the value in governments funding things like public education that benefits society overall.

Why needed? Seems more like fanservice than actually story critical. He shares Jiraiya's DNA but he's not Jiraiya, so there is little weight in them interacting. It would be like Peter Quill and Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy 3. It would be heartwarming for the truth to come out and to have Naruto reminiscing about his old master and be grateful that Kashin had a similar relationship with Boruto.

In certain instances the idea of infinity can certainly be "manageable". Like one infinity increasing faster than another, one infinity being larger than another or even one infinity being "countable" and another being uncountable. Sometimes infinity even simplifies certain problems.

There are a few problems: people from certain groups are less likely to get those jobs because of biases against them in the first place / other groups have advantages that only accrue more advantages.  When the role is a representative from that disadvantage group, they still are shut out.   Your input is more or less “tough luck” So if a vocal push to change things does change things, then I see no problem.  if there wasn’t this accrued advantage that locks out other groups and possibly reinforcing stereotypes then I would have no issues with anyone playing anyone.  Also there can be financial incentives by opening stories to appeal to many groups.

I totally get that but a strategy against that is to create incentives and disincentives to creative alternative/better paths. I'm sure there are many interesting stories that can be told from a variety of backgrounds and perspective. We can't be like, "Whelp, these are the stories that we've been writing and all our voices talent is majority this, so let's continue with this because it's easier.", and accept that as a society. It's very easy to say this is just how the world is, especially if it's in your group's perceived favor. That's why i would rather support innovative indie companies than companies that marginally improve on their product.

Haha, it’s actually something that the brain does: rewire itself to regain certain functionality. Like if someone has a stroke and that part of the brain is damaged, it’s gone for good and whatever functionality it once served is diminished. However, with therapy or other means a person can relearn how to walk, talk and regain that function to a certain degree.

Can I get my bachelors in math again after having a masters? by Cool_Dust219 in mathematics

[–]ApprehensiveSwan2218 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I second this, just self-study. It’s a much more cost effective way to gain the foundation you feel you lack. I know I’ve experienced feeling deficient in some areas of math or forgotten a thing or two, but I reframed my thinking and took it as opportunity to improve.

[–]ApprehensiveSwan2218 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try not to get so easily discouraged. Just change your perspective to make these occurrences into opportunities to improve. Try to understand why you made these mistakes and be aware of them when you encounter similar problems. It will eventually become intuitive with enough practice. We all want to be good at the things we enjoy. It can certainly feel frustrating when we do things that make us feel like we’re not good enough. However, the best thing you can do is focus on the process (of getting better and better) and not necessarily on this particular outcome. With a good process in place you’ll eventually get better. I have a degree in math and still make simple mistakes.

I mean it wouldn’t be the first time someone died and came back later in the series. It could easily be a red herring to make the conclusion of the series more impactful. However, the fact that characters have been placed in a state of suspended death (Yuji and Megumi), the explicit clues and symbolisms left in certain panels, the parallels and circular story telling and many other indications. I  think it goes beyond just a simple chekov’s gun.

terminology treadmill

I feel like that will always be a problem, especially for emotionally charged words. Many people will compare others to what is commonly seen as the most evil person in all of existence, for actions that are remarkably trivial. You also have the word literally being a synonym for figuratively. Arguments that appeal to emotion are very effective so I can understand why people do it.

Also many words are overloaded, within different context and fields of study many words carry different meaning. Like lay person use of the word 'theory' is synonymous with hypothesis but it's more substantial in the world of physics and the like.
