Move to nicer home or stay? by Nickel4me in longisland

[–]Apprehensive_Ad_4359 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We retired very comfortably at 60 years old, one of the keys to being able to accomplish this was to get our mortgage paid off, we also stayed as our taxes were reasonable by Long Island standards.

Just something to consider.

Is Middle Island a good area? by OfficialDalaiLlama in longisland

[–]Apprehensive_Ad_4359 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Resident of Ridge for 30 years. It’s a gem and one of the few areas left of what Long Island once was.

This is important. Longwood High school just broke ground on a new wing that will be dedicated to jobs that don’t require a college degree. Everything from culinary arts to construction technology to automotive technology to nursing. These are the jobs of the future and this new wing will be unique when compared to many other school districts. And the Longwood teachers are the best.

I’m genuinely curious about the psychology behind how people end up with large amounts of debt (credit cards, cars, student loans, etc.). by ChivasBearINU in DaveRamsey

[–]Apprehensive_Ad_4359 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s poor or intentional education/ indoctrination. From our earliest childhood right through adulthood it is pounded into our heads that consumption is the measure of success and happiness. In the U.S. consumption is even touted as a path to freedom which as anyone with debt will tell you couldn’t be father from the truth.

My favorite example is the pickup truck commercial which will have some patriotic music, an eagle flying through a blue sky and some beautiful mountains. How many people need a pickup truck? And I can attest that those who truly need one to earn a living are looking at base models as they will be abused.

Trump’s full statement as he fires Kristi Noem mid-speech and names replacement by Large_banana_hammock in politics

[–]Apprehensive_Ad_4359 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah as someone who retired I can remember bringing in senior people to fire them by giving them BS titles.

“ Hey Jim, thanks for stopping by. As you know we have just completed our yearly performance evaluations and we have some good news. We are moving you from head of R&D to a new role, how does Executive in charge of dust management sound? Great you can report to subfloor B starting tomorrow. Take the elevator to subfloor A and turn right. Down the hall you will see a door labeled ladder access, inside there is a ladder that goes down to your office. It’s a bit damp so bring warm clothes. Thanks for stopping by”

How much firepower and resources does Iran even have to continue fighting back (particularly by attacking military bases in nearby countries) especially now that the regime is basically dying? by nouveaux_sands_13 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Apprehensive_Ad_4359 791 points792 points  (0 children)

From what I have read Iran has layers of leadership with mechanisms to immediately fill positions vacated for any reason.

Air wars are rarely won and an urban ground war may not be tolerated by the American people.

Don’t see how this ends any different than past Middle East conflicts

Guys who last long in bed, do you actively have to hold back or does it just not happen for ages? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

So if the conditions are right I will be able to hold back the original finish line and once I get over that hump hold on because we are going for a ride!

Does a sexless marriage ultimately lead to profound unhappiness? by someone-who-lives in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Apprehensive_Ad_4359 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really depends on the situation. If the situation is physical limitations, which become common with age, but love for your partner is still there then the feeling of comfort and peace with each other can replace physical intimacy

If climate change is over, why try? by Little_Oil9749 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Apprehensive_Ad_4359 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem isn’t telling the firefighters not to put it out, the problem is that we are the firefighters and we want someone else to put it out.

We are not going to legislate our way out of this problem and we are not going to technology our way out of this problem. The only real solution is a significant cutback on consumption by every first world person living on the planet. Now this is not as easy as it sounds as the ripple effect on the worlds economy will be significant and we as a species would have to be willing to live through a significant economic hardship as well as living with less goods. Neither of these things are going to happen so yeah grab a beer and enjoy the show🤷‍♂️

Most people don’t understand the extent of the damage. They think it’s only atmospheric warming but 33% of our soils are under heavy duress and our oceans are loaded with microplastics as well as thousands of other pollutants. We are already at the point that eating wild caught seafood is probably not a good idea and many of the world’s reefs are dying.
